Out of the few Harry Stephen Keeler books that I’ve read this is by far the most complicated “web work” as he calls it. written and set in the mid 1930s a miserly Uncle summons his nephew to in essence payback the debt of his dead father. But the plot is hardly just that. There is a basement full of safes, drugs that causes one to forget one’s identity, stowaways aboard a ship coming from Hawaii, several stacks of unread manuscripts that might go into a mystery magazine, a Caucasian girl with a Chinese name and the skull of a dead clown that could be used to claim a valuable life insurance policy. And that’s not even the half of the sub plots and yarns that run through this relatively small book! I don’t know how Harry Stephen Keeler kept everything straight in writing such a thing, but I love him for it.
