Update!! After the story aired and was shared all over. Ortiz was notified by his principal that he’s staying, he’s keeping his program and he’s getting a raise! Incredible what journalism can do!
Augustine Ortiz was named teacher of the year in 2023 for the incredible mariachi program he built 12 years ago at Poe Dual Language middle school. Two weeks ago he was informed by SAISD he was going to be displaced to another school as his program gets cut.
