I just casually spent $60 on fried chicken and beer yet have been struggling for three months about whether I should purchase a $20 game, on a discount, that I've genuinely been interested in for years now. This industry is over...
Every day I force myself to wake up and take another step towards hauling this bloated carcass of a project over the finish line, all just to appease my vanity and avoid condemning myself to the irony of its title, is another step towards never wanting to make another game again
implemented an admittedly pretty low-effort flashlight effect on top of player-based ambient visibility, thought I'd have something more impressive to share this
#screenshotsaturday
but looks like it'll have to wait until next week...

There is no longer any other meaningful FPS aesthetic other than "screwing a custom-threaded oil can filter onto the end of my 1911 as an improvised suppressor"
Didn't realise how difficult it'd be to make an empty field of grass look even halfway decent in a top-down perspective with one colour until just about now...
Also new development update for the month, nothing interesting:

If you, like me, believe that one of the best parts about Bethesda games is spending hours sorting through endless containers of junk, well, good news! Now you can do it My Work Is Not Yet Done as well

Actual details here:
I'll be releasing a demo this upcoming Steam Next Fest in October. I admit that I've been saying this every season for at least the past year and consistently failing to deliver, but this time, I'm (hopefully) serious. It will feature exactly none of the content below.

Made a couple of posters a while back in an attempt to shake off some creative fatigue (as well as win some buccs in the case of the former...)
The creative fatigue did not pass until much later and I won no buccs (lmao...) but I ended up w/ posters and now you can have them too
Completely finished building the map today, so I figured it'd nice to build a brief compilation showcasing some of the work (had to be cropped, full video is available in link)

The music's by
@DizerEdwin
, who's composing the entire soundtrack!
Update for May 2023 is out now, declaring my formal return to work, and plans for the near future. No release date yet, but possibly a demo and new trailer for the end of summer?

Exciting news for all my much-envied non-gamer friends who can sustain their digital livelihoods on only a Macbook: I'm now $100 poorer and a registered Apple Developer, which means that My Work is Not Yet Done will likely be natively available on Macs via itch(io).
#gamemaker
In case you missed the announcement, I've signed My Work Is Not Yet Done with Raw Fury.
In continuing with our mutual shared goal of better transparency, I'm releasing a write-up below about the pitch process, incl. my full pitch, the email, and the build.

We're IMMENSELY excited to let you know that we've teamed up with Sutemi Production /
@spncryn
to bring you narrative-driven horror game My Work Is Not Yet Done!
This one will be like nothing you've ever experienced before!
Wishlist today:
The PDA is now a standalone device that can be accessed at (almost) any time (previously its functionality was strictly tied to Avery's pack, as an inventory management system); it now includes, amongst more functions soon to come, a map that will probably not help you
#gamemaker
The player can now """inspect""" objects before picking them up, in case for whatever reason you wanted to examine stones and sticks in hi-res detail...
I've also implemented a new shadow system w/ more realistic angles relative to the sun

Far too late for

but not yet too late to still claim the tag

In any case, I've added a "dynamic" sunset, shifted the start of the game to late evening rather than early morning, and have been working on a substantially expanded ""tutorial"" section
Spent an entire day revisiting every single player sprite (150 different sprites, with something like 1200 individual frames...) to add a single pixel to her wrist because I suddenly decided while writing her journal that she should have timekeeping after all...

Monthly update is out for November (+October...), not much new other than to say things are progressing, but in the meantime, here's a very early rough draft of a trailer that did not make the final cut...

The Steam Next Fest demo for My Work Is Not Yet Done is now publicly available. It will not be time-limited, so feel free to check it out whenever.

Update for September 2023 is now out, basically just stating that the demo is 99% content complete and has been submitted for approval to the Steam Next Fest in a couple of weeks

You (probably) can't actually detect ghosts with an EMF meter... but you can use them as intended: to detect EMF aberrations
Also, update for May is out, discussing the current state of the project and plans for completion

Still no audio because it's been unreasonably cold so I haven't bothered recording new stuff but hopefully soon...

+ content trickle has been a bit slow lately because I've been pretty tired but also... because I'm saving it for the trailer (Dec)!
I've gotten enough questions about the influence of Lovecraft et al on My Work Is Not Yet Done, specifically the references to Carcosa and its centrality to the game's themes and story, that I'll publicly state that yes, it's important but probably not in the way you're expecting
No matter how well (or not) the rest of this year and decade go, I can now say for certain that I started it off on a high note:
The Kickstarter and trailer for my game are now live (Steam store page coming very soon due to stupid bureaucratic bullshit)
I've been working on the texture of night-time environments lately; the other night I spent some time out in the forest and one of the things I found most striking was the uncomfortable and stark effects of a powerful flashlight beam in the darkness

It turns out that designing for button-based interfaces when you've spent virtually your entire digital life on touch-based interfaces is far more difficult than I initially anticipated
#gamemaker
I'm gonna start this with Exit Mask by Stef Pinto (), whose first chapter Sutures is currently available
It's a visceral and rather gruesome exploration of self-disgust presented in a really striking and unique visual style
Haven't done a

in what feels like almost a year at this point, but since it's Saturday, and I've actually been working, I've touched up the visuals for the S̶t̶e̶a̶l̶t̶h̶ ̶C̶a̶m̶ and created a new interface element for extracting data from it.

This month's update is released, discussing a tentative timeline for the rest of development, as well as going over some of the tools Avery has at her disposal

Now that I have lost twenty followers in the past week or so alone for no immediately obvious reason, I have finally become untethered from any vestigial semblances of caring and am now convinced that there is nothing stopping me anymore from publicly yoonaposting
#gamemaker
Adding yet another entry into a stupendously prodigious list of pointless bullshit I actively choose to waste my life on instead of doing things that actually matter, device charges for the sensors are now tied to individual battery capacities

Still haven't gotten around to foley for this yet so here is a foley-less video of a tiny 1-bit woman assembling a mechanically implausible self-erecting bivouac, scored by

as pseudo-Satie

+ new year, new update
New update for July, nothing you haven't seen or heard before if you follow this project with any consistency:
The main new feature here is regarding the eating/cooking system, which has been redone almost completely

One of the worst parts about games is that we've somehow allowed what was once a thriving and diverse print media culture of manuals, magazines, guides, and rulebooks to degrade into a disappointingly tiny and uniform pool of ~$100 hardcover-only collector's coffee table artbooks
Added a visual effect for dirtiness, which accumulates over time when outdoors (particularly during rainfall), and increases the chance of infections, and drains willpower over time; dirtiness can be purged at the outpost's decontamination shower
#gamemaker

The interior's nowhere close to finished yet, but at least now you don't have to imagine that there's a roof...

I've also written another update about plans moving forward
+ customary steam bullshit
Admittedly this turned out looking considerably better than I expected for some random cloud textures I ripped from a site with "Free-Clipart-Pictures" in its URL

In light of a new year starting and many new and exciting things ahead, I will once again share this not-a-trailer showcasing some locations from My Work Is Not Yet Done, with music composed by

(Slightly) longer version here:
I've been receiving some questions about the specific nature of various mechanics so in the interest of addressing those comprehensively, I'll try to start doing biweekly posts about mechanics, coming (hopefully) soon, starting with firestarting
