The dilemma of trying to make gen AI "safe": who gets to deem what content is offensive? My story on how researchers at Google in 2021 tried to make a more diverse training dataset but disproportionately censored innocuous LGBTQ+ content from it: 1/n

Xanadu made a photonic quantum computer, which encodes information in light. This is also an alternative architecture to the more well-known QCs by Google and IBM, which are made of superconducting circuits.

She also shared what it was like to enter academia as the child of working class Dominican immigrants. She found herself having to learn the "hidden curriculum" of astronomy research, as in how to find and apply for pockets of money. 3/n

Isn't it just so pretty to think: all along there was some invisible quantum algorithm tying you to me

4/n But Google's missteps in 2021 are a success story relative to today. At least then, they opened themselves to scrutiny from outside researchers. Today, AI companies are afraid of lawsuits. We users are left in the dark about what data the models use -- or discard.

Quantum computers can't execute long algorithms with accuracy. I report on an advance from Google in this department, though Jay Gambetta of rival IBM cautions that it's just a first step. The dance continues: get a little excited, but not too much.

In April, I visited Frontier, the world's fastest supercomputer, in Tennessee. It's 35 times faster than Tianhe-2A, which was #1 in 2014, and 33,000 times faster than Earth Simulator, #1 in 2004. Here's my story on what they're doing with it.

Some physics profs are embracing ChatGPT in teaching. “This tool is out there,” physicist Yasemin Kalender told me. “Instead of trying to police students, we can actually have an honest conversation.” I reported on some of their classroom experiments:
