We also found that rather than self-injury being in response to a stimulus, it can serve a pre-emptive function to help individuals prepare for their day.

We found that avoidance is not a term that resonates with individuals who engage in self-injury. Individuals see self-injury as a way of dealing with what they are experiencing.
