you know, the best part of virat kohli’s interview? he stated religion as the root of all the abuse shami was getting. no room for a counter argument. addressing the islamophobia was so important.

Lata Mangeshkar—like other subcontinental stars—had her contradictions. She spoke positively of Muslim colleagues, admiration from Pakistan, and Savarkar/RSS. These contradictions must be taken seriously intellectually, instead of being dismissed as nonsensical/inauthentic (1/2)

This is important not least because these are sentiments shared by so many in society. And one needs to understand their nuances to help overcome them. Will always listen to Lata’s matchless voice, but that’ll always be a politically aware engagement (2/2)

Unpopular opinion: despite a poor series, Patidar should play at Dharamshala. Faster pitch and he gets into great positions against pace. IND will need these skills overseas, especially post RGS/VK Sample this: back-foot punch off Wood (147 kmph) at Rajkot…

Sadly most (not all) English criticism of turning pitches isn’t about cricket. It’s a cultural problem; it comes out of a historicised superiority complex that prevents the embrace of otherness. If a pitch has even bounce it’s good for cricket. Even if it’s bad for your politics.

More evidence that Bhuvneshwar can only play when both Bumrah and Harshal do, thus freeing him from death-bowling duty. There are other options too: the better defensive bowler is Arshdeep. To complete the focus on defence, perhaps even consider Ashwin for Chahal, and to bat at 9

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s grand figures: 4 overs for 52 runs and no wickets. 4 wides. Of course, after his disastrous 19th over against Pak & Sri Lanka in Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma in his wisdom gave it to him again. Tactical genius, innit?

Brilliant point by @sidvee on @81allout : Shami and Siraj, not Bumrah, make for the “apex” of India’s fast bowling lineage—a line from Kapil to Srinath to Zaheer. Bumrah meanwhile is an exception. His genius is too rare to count. A glorious outlier. No predecessor, no successor

Feel IND’s best bet in WC is to play on turners. Play Axar, Jadeja & Sundar, or at least 2 of 3. Bat till 8/9. Replicate test dominance. Flat conds negate finger-spin, & this “4 best bowlers” strategy while pure & beautiful leaves batting thin. Aapko kya lagta hai @dweplea sahab?

Halfway through the annual Fellows-Undergrads cricket match @CorpusCambridge 2/23 in 5 ovs. After a shocking 2nd over, took two-in-two. On a hat-trick against my own student—commentary & camera work provided by Umpire @thirumasu Fellows need 146 in 30 overs at Tea. Tough ask

8.5, Modi to Rahul, SIX. Full bunger on the pads easily helped over square leg with a nonchalant flick of the wrist. Desperate times for the wayward tearaway. Fortunately for him, he has a few runs in the bank to defend yet (and a compromised umpire or two)

Generous review in @Outlookindia “What distinguishes The Muslim Secular is its seamless transition between histor[y] & contemporary implications. Sohal draws intriguing parallels with the present, shedding light on how…Azad, Ghaffar Khan & Abdullah…shape [our] landscape.”

TLDR: Azad divides history into what's dead and what lives on via its descendants. Our contemporary inheritance matters; history per se doesn't. But since inheritance can be tampered with by RW religious nationalists, it's also an active principle to which we remain responsible

Since history was alive in the competitive form of positive and negative inheritance, Azad's Indians must never stop engaging with the past. Food for thought, then, for his descendants (END)

So Azad subordinated the long political history of Indian monarchy to this focus on culture and society. Kings and queens were dead. But poetry, music, painting, food etc. were alive for the next generation(s). And importantly, these things can't be easily divided by religion

A real honour to be invited by @DCUIndia to give the keynote at the Annual South Asia Conference next week. Will talk about Abdul Ghaffar Khan’s presentist conception of India—and indeed of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Please come if you’re in Dublin on the 26th!
