In the 1880’s, John M. Bookout operated a watch & clock repair shop on Atlanta’s famous Peachtree Street. In 1915, his son, John J. Bookout, relocated the business to 53 West Mitchell Street where they sold “bracelets, watches, rings & clocks.” During that time, green & white tiling marked the shop's entrance. If you walk down Mitchell Street today, you can still see “J.J. Bookout Jeweler” written in tile at the entrance of 221 Mitchell Street. Bookout Jeweler’s time on Mitchell Street was short-lived. Just two years after opening, the business relocated again—this time to the popular Peachtree Arcade a few blocks away. When John J. Bookout died in 1931, the Atlanta Constitution eulogized the 67-year old as "one of Atlanta’s leading businessmen.” Special thanks to an IG follower for sharing these photos with us.
