IMO, values. I thought these were shared with my family, but I was projecting myself onto them because I felt shared circumstances had produced similar results in all of us.
Looking back there were red flags which I dismissed to support my beliefs about who I thought they were.

That's actually a high-performance mask, not an aesthetic or an identity concealer. You don't need to be well-read on pathogen spread and mask physics just to be trying to hide indentity. Any poor, cloth mask would work for that.

I grieved them like they'd died. And in a way they had, because they will never be to me again what they were. The moral injury was too great.
Grieving them allowed me to see them as new ppl/versions, and put them outside of my emotional trust.
Less meaningful, and less hurt.
