Inspirations for Original Cyberspace Themes, a thread 🧵
I want to preface this by mentioning that the main influence for the level lighting is the OST. I want players to actually be reminded about the respective stage the OST comes from.
New take on Sonic Frontiers' HUD!
My goal was to make it more comfortable to read, and more suitable for the game's atypical nature.

: "it runs thru iconic sections of the ['06] original... running down the outside of the castle walls to grabbing flying eagles, & running through the infamous water vortex."

i find people complaining and saying "go back to your hip-hop, rock, and metal-influenced roots" really bizarre
like, a lot of shadow's music in sa2 was in the style of edm of the time, same with sonic generations
heck, when did shadow ever had anything to do with hip hop?
Starting off simple, 1-1 is inspired by Generations White Space, and the fact that in the plot Sonic is transported to a completely unknown dimension, so I felt the level could've reflected that better. (2/?)
@megasart1
tbh my honest thoughts are that the purple sky and orange sunset lighting of forces looks better than the realtime lighting of sxsg
overall visual fidelity is much greater for sxsg tho
Gimme more Sonic levels where I can just see the level design and be like "Nah I think I'll just fly instead".
Also original cyberspace aesthetics mod by
@skrubdmodding
. It's a fantastic mod, really brings the Cyberspace stages to life.
1-2 and the subsequent Ancient Eclipse themes were partially inspired by the Update 3 Master Trials, as well as the Sanctum and Descent into Subconscious stages from Tekken 8. I wanted to convey the decaying yet beautiful world of the Ancients.
1-4 was a really cool one. Shoutout to bickuribox12 for putting words to the overall feeling of Genshi, the digital forest. I was also inspired by Phantasmal Forest from Sonic Momentum. (5/?)
The new Ouranos Island currently in progress. There is still a lot to fix up, refine, add (waterfalls) and change according to user feedback, but you can see where the aim is.
🥺🥺🥺 thanks for the feedback! There were a couple graphical bugs that happened in the video, I've let ppl know how up avoid them so make sure to update the mod‼️
‼️NEEEEEW VIDEEEOOOO UUUUP‼️
Sonic Frontiers NEW Cyberspace Level Themes ARE NOW HERE. AND THIS IS LEGIT A PERMA MOD FOR ME. SHIT MAKES THESE LEVELS LOOK SO UNIQUE.
ENJOY, RT, HYPE :

@ech00art
Nope. The reason I finished this mod in the first place is because of how much I enjoyed the base game to begin with. This was a passion project, not one out of spite
1-5 and the subsequent Lucid Circuit levels were obviously inspired by the Vaporwave/Outrun aesthetic. I felt that the neon lights of Chemical Plant could be pushed even further, and the music helps a ton.
Dude
@hyperbx
and
@ahremic
's smooth camera code for Forces is amazing.
The game just feels so much more cinematic with a smooth transitioning camera, instead of the linear interpolations.
I keep forgetting to put thread numbers but ANYWAY onto 1-6
I tried to make it a more involved riff off of the original Green Hill, by making the sky a deeper shade of blue and adding the ocean. (7/?)
2-2 was inspired by Frontiers promo artwork and title screen. I felt that Heavenly Sky gave this very melancholy feeling that matched with the rainy atmosphere with light rays peeking through. (10/?)
I worked backwards from 4-I rather than 1-7 for its theme. The space theme was an obvious decision for the low gravity mechanic and the background music just WORKS. As reference, I used this artwork made by the talented artist @/novelance
2-3 was inspired by the brighter Vaporwave images. I felt that the contrast between this and the darker Lucid Circuit levels was really nice and prevented the theme from feeling stale. (11/?)
@Link_LingChu
ONE MORE THING
Notice how there's a consistent Ancient motif in most of the stages. I wanted to carry this over from Eternal Highway, since it makes the premise of Cyberspace way more interesting. This also helped make Frontiers' overall art design a lot more cohesive. ✌ (30/29)
2-5 and all the other Firewall Fissure stages were very obviously inspired by Donkey Kong Country Returns, but did you know Sonic Lost World actually did this already? (13/?)
@Link_LingChu
4-7 is inspired by the motorcycle scene from the film Fallen Angels and the Dark Hour from Persona 3. The street lights didn't really cast light too well in vanilla so I had to manually place new lights to make the look of the level stand out more (26/?)
@Link_LingChu
okay okay 3-4 and 4-6 also carries over from 2-5. Since Cyberspace is digital, it obviously works out that the correpsonding colours are RGB. Also Fog Funk feels extra foggy and funkier thanks to the new sub-theme (25/?)
@jav_dotwav
3-7 All Reality feels like a very isolating track. I wanted to reflect that in the stage, so it feels like you're all alone in space and then in an abandoned space station. Creepy. Again, credit to
@novelance
(21/?)
2-6 is inspired by the Northern Lights! Did you know that I also put the earth below the level? Gives 2-6 the sense of scale of being so high up that it's too dangerous to fall. A 'Transparent Highway' (14/?)

@jav_dotwav
3-6 Enjoy This World has a very celebratory type beat, so I made the sky warmer and added confetti. Feels kinda dark that there's an eclipse looming above, I was originally gonna push this concept further (20/?)
@Link_LingChu
4-5 already had a very nice aesthetic with the sunset. I wanted to push the Arrow of Time feeling more, like as if you're running through heavenly light (or smth along those lines). I added more lightrays to get the feeling across (24/?)
@Link_LingChu
4-8 is also the same sort of inspiration as the last few lucid circuit levels, not much else to add here lol (much like the actual stage!) (27/?)
@Link_LingChu
4-9, the climactic (or is it) finish to the Cyberspace levels. The original daytime sky didn't really convey that feeling across so I felt that the sunset was more appropriate. Also partially inspired by Sunset Wilds from Mario Kart. (28/?)
@Link_LingChu
And yeah that's pretty much it! Update 3 reuses the same level themes as their source levels so I don't really need to talk about them. I hope you enjoyed reading my thought process when designing the new stage themes! Thank you guys for the tremendous support once again (29/29)
