Having been 'in goalkeeping' for over 25 years as a coach, I am yet to find a goalkeeper who has never made a mistake...and I have been luck enough to work with some of the best ! What is important is how you play after making that mistake...that's what makes great goalkeepers !

Sir Bobby used to say ‘sticky fingers, strong wrists’ to the goalkeepers when catching the ball !!
I would add ‘lead your hands to the ball’ . So, so important not only when catching standing up but also when diving !

Martin's injury is taking slightly longer than expected but anyone who has suffered from 'plantar fasciiatis' knows, it takes time....he is working hard in the gym to maintain fitness and I am looking forward to having him back on the grass asap !

1or2 afternoons a week at Blue Star’s ground, I would work with Pav 1to1. He would bring his Czech goalkeeping book, a hand written note book. He would show me the exercises for the session and I served and ‘coach’! A very special and treasured part of my ‘goalkeeping education’

‘Fingersave’ or ‘Spyne’ technology for me was not about safety but ‘catching technique’ - keeping your fingers in a ‘basket’ catching position...fantastic ‘tool’ for teaching young goalies to catch properly and safely !

I appreciate that goalies need to ‘feel’ the ball but gloves are getting thinner and flimsier...fingertip for matches, fingersave for training! Fingers and wrists need protection!The pace and power the ball is struck with is ever increasing!

Don’t forget the basics…handling, footwork, diving, reaction saves, strong wrists as Sir Bobby would say !! So ‘snap’ your mannequins, let down your blow up ‘dolls’ and teach goalies to stop the ball going in the net !
