🌍 🌍 Prioritizing Food Security for Africa’s Future 🌱 Last week, I had the honor of hosting IITA Ambassador, H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, at my residence for a breakfast meeting focused on a critical priority: ensuring Africa’s food security through scalable innovations. Chief Obasanjo’s words were a powerful reminder: 🗣️ “Anyone who feeds you can enslave you.” Food security is not just an agricultural issue—it is a matter of economic independence, resilience, and sustainable development. African governments must place it at the core of their agendas to build a self-sufficient and prosperous continent. At @IITA_CGIAR, we are committed to science-driven innovations, empowering farmers, and forging strong partnerships to transform Africa’s food systems. 🌱 🚀 Strengthening Africa’s Agricultural Research and Innovation 🌱 January was an energizing start to the year! From January 9-11, I had the privilege of attending the AU CAADP Summit in Uganda, a crucial platform for shaping agriculture-driven economic transformation across Africa. 🔹 Strategic Engagements: 📌 I had a meaningful discussion with Dr. Mabouba Diagne, Senegal’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, on how IITA’s research can align with Senegal’s ambitious food security goals. 📌 I also connected with Dr. Yona Baguma, Director General of Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), exploring ways to assess impact and scale innovations to benefit more farmers. 📌 During my meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development for Cameroon, H. E. Gabriel Mbairobe, we discussed how innovation scaling is critical to the country's agriculture and food security agenda, and how IITA can strengthen efforts in the country. 📌 It was a delight meeting with the Ministers of Agriculture for Sierra Leone and Tanzania, during which we shared insights on how to drive the mutual goal of strengthening Africa's food systems. 🌍 A highlight of my trip was visiting IITA’s Sendusu Station, where I engaged with our dedicated staff. I reiterated our shared vision: ensuring Africa is food and nutrition secure through science, innovation, and partnerships. These engagements reaffirm IITA’s commitment to driving impactful agricultural research and strengthening national systems. Exciting times at the @AUC_CAADP Summit in Uganda! I had the incredible opportunity to attend the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) in beautiful Kampala. The discussions were invigorating, focusing on the urgent need for enhanced collaboration and investment in agricultural research and innovation to propel sustainable food systems across Africa. At the Summit, I gave a keynote address during a panel session on "Strengthening AARIEIs-CGIAR Engagement in Africa: Strategic Alliances, Cost Optimization, and Lessons Learned". The panel session highlighted critical issues around creating a sustainably functioning African agricultural research and innovation ecosystem that produce requisite products and services for the transformation of Africa's agrifood systems. . #CAADP #Agriculture #FoodSystems #Collaboration #OneCGIAR

Earlier this evening, I called President-elect @JDMahama to congratulate him on his decisive victory in the just-ended presidential election. I also congratulated the @ECGhanaOfficial and the Ghanaian people for a successful election that reflects the enduring strength of Ghana’s democracy. In the spirit of collaboration, I invited the President-elect for a meeting on Wednesday at Jubilee House to initiate the transition process. May God continue to bless our homeland Ghana and make her great and strong. 🇬🇭
