Gonna leave this pinned here for people who need a guide to my books because folks keep getting confused. In chronological order by pub: SIGNAL TO NOISE: Teens cast spells using vinyl records, drama ensues. Low fantastic element, don't expect dragons and such.

One of the most bizarre internet behaviors is the idea that a creative is personally victimizing a viewer or reader. As if I knew that u are afraid of spiders & therefore wrote about spiders, which means you have the right to come and shake your fist angry that I did this to you.

In defense of black mold, I grew up in a house with black mold and all that happened was that I wrote a successful horror novel.

I did the NaNoWriMo thing some 15 years ago. The main impetus and benefit of it was socialization. You would meet people online/in person chat about books, have a buddy writing in parallel. Like joining a marathon. In other words, the point was not output but experience. This is

You've seen "it's ableist to say writers should read." Now it's time for "it's ableist to say that writers should write." Mardollism seems to be the dominant ideology in some major writing circles.

what these companies don't understand. If I joined a marathon at the office, it wasn't because I really thought I would win first place: it's because my colleagues would participate, we could train together, have something to do, then get together for celebratory dinner. It's the

A big thank you to TikTok creator and nursing student Tasnim Geedi who defended MEXICAN GOTHIC on Canada Reads. Frankly, the year this book came out I thought it was the year my career would end, with the pandemic everyone's dates were being pushed away. Our original print run

A lot of the 'let's bring back the Hayes Code' mentality relies on this basic thought process instead of understanding that maybe I just like to write about spiders and am not personally on a crusade to traumatize Jim Jones of Iowa who hates tarantulas.

not the word count. It's a ghoulish thing to see big corporations trying to suck the humanity, the journey, the personal experiences, out of everything. If you want the real benefits of NaNoWriMo, instead of destroying your soul, call a friend and make a writing day. Even if you

Also, never fall for the 'tasteful' argument. Some people will tell you oh I wouldn't oppose spiders if they were done tastefully which is like who the hell gets to determine 'tasteful.' Plus, plenty of stuff that wasn't 'tasteful' when I was young (John Waters, rap music, etc)

a writer who does writer 'sprints' with a friend. I haven't done one with him yet, but I might. Sometimes it's fun to have an excuse to take the laptop to a coffee shop and see a friend. I can't really do meaningful work like that, but again, it's because I'm enjoying the journey

In short: I'm throwing a bon voyage party for my uterus. Long version, read the whole thread as it's an important PSA: I'm having a hysterectomy soon. I don't like to share details on my personal life, but on this occasion it's important for health reasons. I hadn't been feeling-

@TheLincoln He seems to have a bunch of moral good characters, some clearly evil baddies who twirl their moustache, and a few gray characters. That the good guys don't triumph at the end of the first book is because it's a saga. Sauron isn't killed by page 30 either.

Someone told me about NaNoWriMo and AI that people like the idea of writing rather than the actual writing. True, that's likely because of unrealistic portrayals of writers which is an excellent reason to recommend Can You Ever Forgive Me? by Lee Israel. The film is awesome. It's

You know how you can fundraise to commemorate your birthday? Well, it's like that. Except weirder. My charity of choice is UNICEF Canada and the Gaza Crisis fund. I'm trying to raise $6,000 and I already ponied up $1,000 so that leaves $5,000 more to go.

was 12,000 copies (a modest amount for the big 5 American publishers) but even that seemed in peril because bookstores were closed. But it sold out and then the problem was there was no paper to send it back to print!

If you have heavy periods, if you feel something is off, please do get yourself checked. I'm glad several family members encouraged me to make a bit of a fuss about my health. I was inclined to simply ignore it. Don't ignore it.

@TheLincoln My eldest is an airplane mechanic, just finished his schooling. If he didn't't pay attention in class things would go 'boom' or he'd lose body parts. And yeah, him passing was actually important because the 'paradigm' of grades kind of matters when something can kill you.

While my health issues have caused me a great deal of anxiety for many months, and although I will miss one of my body parts, I have decided to throw my uterus a bon voyage party of sorts by hosting a fundraiser.

Anyway, please help me commemorate the departure of my uterus with a donation to UNICEF and their Gaza Relief initiative: I'll see you all around and take good care of your uterus and consult your doctor if anything seems awry.

@KalynnBayron My contract indicates that foreign editions need to check with my agency about covers for this reason. Because many times they gave us white women on the cover and I had to ask to change them. I still don't catch 100% of problems, but it has gotten better.

one of the few, more accurate representations of a writer that I've seen on screen. Young Adult, with Charlize Theron as a ghost writer for a YA book series is also accurate. It's unglamorous and there are no beautiful writers living in mansions going to cocktail parties 24/7.

well for a long time. I had long, very heavy, uncomfortable periods. I thought it was nothing, why make a fuss. Well, turns out I have hyperplasia, a condition that can lead to cancer. Lab testing has shown some not so great stuff about the cells in my uterus. Hence surgery.

That won't happen because I need to recover. I'm going to Seattle, Dallas and New York in August to promote The Seventh Veil of Salome. Sorry to my friends in LA, Chicago, Miami who I wanted to see this summer.

I didn't have much of a birthday party last month, so I asked my friends to donate in lieu of a gift and I thought I'd keep it private. But then I figured maybe other people might want to make a little donation, and the more money I can raise, the better.

In practical terms, this means I won't have a big book tour this summer. I know I had told fans that would be the case. It was supposed to be my first multicity major tour. I've done festivals, and sandwiched together events before. But this would have been seven cities.

For Latin American Heritage Month I recommended 5 SFF books via Google Play (see ). I'll quickly add right here another title I just acquired, PINK SLIME, both an ecological catastrophe and a family drama by Fernanda Trías (Heather Cleary translates).

Of course, Can You Ever Forgive Me? is autobiographical and Young Adult is fiction, but they are both great. Incidentally, She Devil, the American adaptation, is worth watching for Meryl Streep's hilarious performance as a romance novelist patented after Barbara Cartland.

Similarly, if you're still wanting to see writers on screen, Ken Rusell's Gothic, with a screenplay by Stephen Volk, is about Mary Shelley & co at Villa Diodati. It's lush, it's crazy, and like Naked Lunch it explores, with a surreal touch, ideas about inspiration and creation.

PS: Cronenberg's Naked Lunch is obviously not realistic because it's a trippy sci Fi film, but it does approach the ideas of artistic obsession and production that feel close to the emotional core writing can have. It's a surreal, horrific delight, too.
