Privately-educated children of pushy parents were probably always better suited for US universities anyway: being grade 8 in an instrument or excelling in a sport or doing lots of charity work matter there but are entirely disregarded by Oxbridge admissions.
As a result Oxford and Cambridge have sunk to fourth place in the latest Times Good Universities Guide. I'm skeptical about this drop, but there's one thing I have definitely noticed. Middle class students, knowing they'll be discriminated against, are now applying to US schools.

The older a society gets, the more hostile it becomes to children A french court confiscated a school's playground because: "The noise stops some from being able to work from home, and deprives others of the peaceful enjoyment of their retirement"

Even my German Silesian grandfather who fought in WW2, spent years in Soviet captivity, never returned “home” and lost his entire family during the Red Army advance, considered irredentism absurd. Instead, he cared about breaking the cycles of hate and revenge that led to war.

Robert Redford dying reminded me that in the Watchmen TV show (1) Redford is president (2) he was elected in 1992 and as of 2019 is in his seventh term (3) he passed reparations, administered by his Treasury Secretary, Henry Louis Gates Jr (4) his press secretary is Ezra Klein

I continue to think she's an extremely talented politician who will be undone by the stuff she was saying c2020. Many such cases. Oppo research will be a breeze.
🚨🚨 AOC and her team are positioning her to run for president or the U.S. Senate in 2028, according to people familiar with her operation.

I feel about euthanasia as Savigny felt about codification: it may be practicable & desirable one day, but our culture simply isn’t mature enough for it at the moment.
Is Lord Brooke, sitting one seat along from the sponsor of the Bill, advocating for assisted dying as a tool of population control? An extraordinary contribution suggesting human life be actively sacrificed to prevent climate change. This bill drives utilitarian thinking!

I will mention that, even among the small pool of philosophers (fewer than 100) to whom John and I reached out, at least a dozen more—including several of similar statute to those who signed the brief—responded to say that they agreed or sympathized with its conclusion, but for
In the coming term, the Supreme Court will be considering a pair of cases about state laws which exclude male athletes from female sports. Such laws, which have now been enacted by 27 states, are conceived by their proponents as protecting the integrity of female sports and by

Describing the internal divisions within the Conservative Party can be very tricky - in France that is much less the case, despite - or perhaps because of - the total lack of a dominant party of the Right | my first piece for @EngelsbergIdeas

The French Right has been shaped by prolonged struggle for the balance of power between three consistent, if evolving, tendencies: the Legitimists, the Orléanists, and the Bonapartists.

I agree, and I would add that these past months have also shown us that the real divide is not between left and right, or woke and unwoke, but between those who cling to their tribe and those who stand by their principles.
All mobs are the same whether they are left or right, religious or secular, male or female. This last week has been an important reminder—in case anyone had forgotten.

“Kill them all. Kill them all.” Apparently that’s not an offence. Britain has two tier justice. It is absolutely undeniable.
Kent Police have decided that no crime has been committed after Charlotte Hayes called for conservatives to be murdered: “Why is anyone condemning that. Kill them all. Kill them all.” This is two-tier policing - leftists can now publicly call for our deaths with no

Recently I've seen some people take the line that woke cancel culture was only objectionable insofar as it targeted mainstream, noncontroversial, or within-the-Overton-window views. This, they say, distinguishes it from recent events. I want to register my disagreement with this.
