I did a thing! I am excited to share that I am now Dr. Chen! Since coming to the US to pursue my PhD in clinical psychology in 2018, It has been a journey of both excitement and challenges, supported immensely by mentors
@giorgiobee
, partners, family, friends, and students. YAY!
Beyond thrilled to share that I match with Weill-Cornell Medical Center! I'm SO excited about the clinical training and research collaboration next year! I also feel deeply fortunate to go to such a dream site without relocating.
Happy pride! I’m Mark (he/him), a clinical psych PhD researching adversity, emotion regulation, & psychopathology across diverse contexts and development. I enjoy spending time with my dog and walking around the city. And you know my dog in the pic will do anything for a treat😂
Happy pride! I'm Andrea (she/her), a clinical psychology phd student going on internship this year. I research suicide risk and resilience among youth. I like to play board games, card games, video games, etc. I'm also afraid of heights, so it took me ~30 mins to get this picture
Dissertation defended✅
All but internship🚂
A huge thanks to my committee

Snuggle with my boy after a full day of internship interviews! ☺️ I am officially half way through internship interviews. Such an exhausting and exciting process! Fellow applicants, hope you are doing well and I feel you!
I am excited and relieved to announce that I just passed my dissertation proposal! Thank you, Drs. George Bonanno
@giorgiobee
, Doug Mennin, and Niall Bolger for your wonderful suggestions and helpful input. Now, I need to actually do it. I am all but dissertation & internship😁
Nobel price winner is allegedly a serial harasser preying on female Chinese students. When first arriving in US, students are often scared to report a well-known professor. Dybvig took advantage of this. I have seen comments from 3 different students talking about his harassment
In the comment section under a WeChat post on Philip Dybvig (one of this year's Nobel Economics laureates), someone alleged that she had been sexually harassed by him, and that he is a serial harasser preying on female Chinese students. Screenshot of said comment:
Such an amazing experience

Went to great talks on EMA and computational psychiatry and contributed to a symposium on resilience and optimal functioning. Moreover, my 3 RAs, Drishti, Kiyan, and Spencer presented their first ever posters— So proud of you all! 🥹🥹
So excited that my submission to SRP
@srp_science
was accepted as one of the Innovative Ideas presentations! I will present some EMA work on emotion regulation flexibility and its implications for depression and anxiety. Can’t wait to see everyone in St. Louis this September!
All internship/residency interviews completed + Rank almost submitted. Let the waiting begins… Advice for self-care strategies from now to match date will be appreciated😊

This! For me I was never eligible for national funding like GRFP or F31 due to my visa status but I have received institutional funding etc. There are so many pathways to get to where one wants to be! Still, congrats to all who applied, was awarded, or got the HM.
In completely honesty did not even know I could apply for the GRFP and now have foundational funding, a visiting instructor position, and a research fellowship. Do not let a rejection/missed opportunity define your academic journey!
Hi
#psychtwitter
and
#ABCT
friends, I have some EMA, interview, and experimental data on emo reg in dep & anx. I also have some culture/minority stress and ER data. There's some wiggle room. If anyone wants to do a symposium together, I am interested! Retweet appreciated!
My heart is so full. I struggled with difficult issues and self-doubt this week. A mentor is so encouraging, validating, and helpful that now I feel more confident in myself. I deserve to continue doing what I am passionate about and I am committed to be a mentor like her.
In response to

Hi twitter, my name is Lucky. I am a nine-week old male corgi. My hobbies include running into the kitchen, lying on my back for tummy message, and exploring my new home. You can expect to see more of me on my dog dad’s social media. Love, Lucky
Congratulations SIMON! Well deserved!!! Glad I could play a small part in your success. I am so much looking forward to following your trajectory and continuing our collaboration in years to come😃
I am very excited to announce that I will be joining
@BU_CAS
as a graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program!
I will be studying under the mentorship of Dr. Qimin Liu
@QMmmmmmLiu
, focusing on self-injurious thoughts and behaviors as well as idiographic science!
After graduation, I will start as the Susan Nolen-Hoeksema postdoc fellow
@YalePsychology
. This fellowship is personally meaningful for me as the late Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema's work on rumination motivated my initial passion for emo reg & psychopathology from when I was an undergrad.
Time for another Follow Friday! Today we're introducing you to another new SEED member Shuquan Chen (
@shuquan_chen
). 🎉
Shuquan is currently a clinical psychology PhD student at Columbia University.
@AGallyer
What I personally appreciated was: "Many people have to apply for multiple cycles to get in because they need to accure enough relevant experience. Meanwhile, for you, I believe it is not a matter of whether, but a matter of when, if you decide to puruse this path"

Applying for programs literally bankrupted me, but at the same time I was afraid that if I did not go for on-campus interviews, my chance would be hurt. Many programs covered some travel expense but the remaining costs, adding up, were still extradinary.
Hi

#ISTSS
#ISTSS2024
folks, I am late but I’d love to go to ISTSS. I have some EMA (stress, emotion, ER) & clinical interview data from Veterans w/ trauma exposure. If anyone is still looking for a speaker for their symposium, I am down! Retweet appreciated!
My work will focus on adversity, emotion regulation processes, and psychopathology across diverse contexts and development, using a multi-method approach. I am excited about what lies ahead and various collaboration possibilities!
I’m grateful for the opportunity to present our findings at APS 2024
@PsychScience
and highlight the importance of incorporating context assessments when examining ER variability.

@shuquan_chen
It is my 1st in-person
@srp_science
and the most exciting thing is emailing people for meet-up! I have a flashtalk at 2 , moderated by
@ErikNook
& a poster at 5, both on Friday. Come say hi! I am presenting ......
Come to our emotion regulation symposium today at 3pm Lincoln West, concourse level, covering ER in diverse contexts, unique ER processes in reappraising discrimination, integrating multiple methods in understanding emotion switching, and ER change predicting tx outcomes

@srp_science
was fun! I enjoyed learning from so many cool talks and posters, presenting my recent EMA work, and connecting with people! See you in Montréal next year!
Who'll go to
@ADAA_Anxiety
DC?✋ Let's meet up😆 I am doing a symposium with Dr. Lira Yoon, Ben Mitchell, and Ashley Battaglini. It is super early (9 AM on Thursday, R301, meeting room 301), but come by if you are around! Our symposium is ...
Come to our symposium at 9 am Sunday on inflexibility across psychopathology at Embassy, Terrace Level! I will be presenting some exciting work on using EMA to understand components of emotion regulation flexibility in momentary affective outcomes.

This again. Too heavy of a morning read, but let’s call it what it is. Mass shooting hate crime by a White terrorist resulted in 8 dead (6 were Asian women). I feel so sad for those who lost their loved ones. This is not new and we badly need more efforts to stop the hate.
Our brief commentary is online today (), in which we reviewed studies on resilience in the face of disease outbreaks and suggested some directions to close critical gaps (
@giorgiobee
). Psychological Trauma has made all commentaries open access.
@APADiv56
I plan to go to
#ADAA2024
but have too little energy to organize a symposium. If anyone needs a presenter on emotion reg or flexibility in depression/anxiety/PTSD, EMA methods, culture, or ML predictive models, I have some EMA and longitudinal data to contribute🙋RT appreciated🙏
On Saturday 3 PM, I will chair a symposium on new directions in emotion regulation, w/
@DrJoseSoto1
@AjuaDuker
@robdejes
@matt_southward_
covering diverse contexts of ER, integration of multiple types of measures, & treatment implications.
I LOVE this article as someone who grows up in a country where conversion therapy is still used in some contexts. I had a lot of feelings surrounding ABCT's statement. Thank you

How does resilience work?
In our new Nature Reviews Psychology paper we delve further into the crucial role of regulatory flexibility.
We also examine evidence on increasing the odds for resilience by enhancing flexibility
@shuquan_chen
#apschi22
has been amazing so far! If you are still around, we have a symposium on resilience and thriving in the face of trauma and psychopathology at noon.

@david_disabato
Angela Richardson. Hope to see some of you there. :)
As an international student who moved to the US in 2018 for my PhD study, I hear and appreciate your points. On the other hand, however, money and finance appear to be the only language that this administration can understand.
Can y’all please stop saying universities will lose money because international students will be kicked out of the country? These are our students. They are scared. It doesn’t matter if they are on scholarship or pay full tuition. Stop treating our students as profit-generators.
Second, w/ Stefanie Mayer,
@springstabea
@lucinda_sisk
, discussed by James Gross, we will delve into what is “context,” and why it matters in risk and resilience. We argue the need for a systematic evaluation of personal, situational, and cultural context.
@FelixJBerrios
Hi, I am Shuquan Chen (he/him), a PhD student in Clinical Psychology focusing on stress and trauma. I love playing with dogs and finding good food in town. I grew up having at least one cat at home at all time but somehow now I am a dog person. :) The picture is me and Lucky.
Tracie, thank you for voicing this!! The systematic barriers to disseminate antiracist and diversity science are unbelievably huge whereas people in power can easily attack such work *even* when they have 0 expertise in the area. Representation in editorial board is crucial!
Which section of a paper do you struggle the most with? For me, it’s always, always, always introduction, 😂 which explains why I am twitting right now. 🙊

A faculty: From a neurobehavioral perspective, what do you think it is going on for XYZ?
me (inside): I have no idea.😳
me (speaking): bla bla bla ... ... I don’t know😆
Glad to be done with another milestone!😌
Really nice work by my brilliant student, Shuquan Chen!!

this weekend! Who's gonna be here? ✋ Please say hi and meet up! 👋So excited to present myself, see my mentees present 🥹, and attend some of the amazing talks this year!
I had the pleasure chatting with Leo briefly during a poster session and was struck by the thoughtfulness of his questions. If you are looking for a postbac, please connect with him!!!
@FelixJBerrios
Hey - I’m Leo (he/him)! I just finished my BA with a focus in psychology, and am currently looking for a post-bacc RA position in suicidology. I love running, digital photography, the water, and connecting with other queer + trans folks in science 🌈🌈🏳️⚧️
International students: Either you move to a school that is willing to risk the lives of students and faculties, or you need to depart this country in the fall.
If school is going online-only this fall, the students must depart the United States and cannot remain in the fall.
Some PIs I applied to invite 8ish for one slot, which I found a waste of applicants’ time and $. Why not invite only those that are admitted, like Minnesota psych (besides their clinical science area where a very short list was invited)?
This is bad. ICE just told students here on student visas that if their school is going online-only this fall, the students must depart the United States and cannot remain through the fall semester.
Sleep problems in PTSD have some unique features, yet they remain largely uncharacterized. Check out this study by Anthony on fear of sleep and how this is associated with trauma types and sleep disturbance
Bro my professor just had us line up from lightest to darkest in the classroom.
I as the only dark skinned and only Black person in the Room am feeling unnecessarily humiliated. But I’ve already used my 1 absence and can’t flee 😭
Blew my mind! I personally don’t want ally-ship *with condition* from one of the most prominent psychopathology & treatment researchers who himself contributed to the development and and dissemination of harmful practice to the LGBTQ+ community. I felt disgusted, not supported.

@ABCTNOW
Barlow actually threatened not to sign.
To say that you refuse to condemn conversion therapy unless your (non-LGBTQ, well-celebrated, former conversion therapist) friend gets an award… that’s horrible. That’s not allyship. And this is what Barlow did:
And writer may internalize this kind of decision to devaluate their work. When I reviewed a paper which listed their non-white non-western sample as a limitation, I reminded them that this is in fact strength and an addition to the WEIRD literature.

Dr. Birk is one of the most supportive and patient supervisors I have worked with over the years and I highly recommend that you apply if you are looking for a postdoc focusing on emotion & health (retweet if you can, thank you!!)
wrote professor Bs name in my PhD app SOP to Professor A at a different university (and got an interview, unclear why); sent wrong documents to a portal; missed grant/conference deadlines……many more not enough to fit in a tweet
Mistakes in academia can feel awful. They're also inevitable. And even if they're unfixable, things can be OK long-term.
Mine include
-Shared results—then learned I cleaned data wrong
-Forgot survey items
-Wrote "Harvard" in my PhD app to Yale

I am hiring 3 Postdoctoral Associates for projects on mental health informatics, focusing on health determinants & suicide prevention. Work involves machine learning, NLP, and impactful research.
😭the feeling when u submitted an award application very last minute bcoz you just realized you were eligible, but ur mentor still got the LOR in for you despite all the chaos of the application portal. Yes it is a public appreciation post, and I won’t be so last-minute again.
10:30-11:30 AM Saturday posters:
@sanghvi_drishti
will present how habitual (trait) emotion reg and situational characteristics may predict momentary (state) emotion reg .
@SimonLee_99
will present on the role of ACEs in suicide disparities using an intersectionality perspective.
If you are at SPR, don’t miss out my awesome collaborator Tong’s work on the longitudinal association between time spent with child and parent mental health during the pandemic. It is 6:30 PM PDT today.
Therapy is expensive!!

It is my clinical work day today and it is really hard to concentrate with everything going on in the world. I have a bad feeling, but I hope politicians have learned enough historical lessons from two WWs not to make a third. Pray for people in Ukraine…
I have THOUGHTS. Some on how some therapy orientations get a pass in criticism but more on ABCT having a statement signed by its presidents when at least two (Barlow and Hayes) have published papers on behavioral modification of sexuality
🎉 Big news! 🎉 My brilliant postbacc research assistant

What I found challenging still was to envision and establish a line of research (research program). Still working on it. I recent came across a book by
@JCCAP_Editor
on this topic- strongly recommended for my peer students!
Intervention studies do not always report associated costs, step-by-step implementation, etc. This informative paper addressed this issue and called into attention implementation readiness
1/7. Excited to share my first paper! "Do We Report the Information that is Necessary to Give Psychology Away? A Scoping Review of the Psychological Intervention Literature 2000-2018" is now in press at Perspectives on Psychological Science.
