A girl I briefly dated who was really into Michelin starred chefs told me once that without exception all her chef exes would subsist almost completely on junk food and instant noodles. I think about that a lot.

Top university admissions counsellor in Singapore (best track record of getting top achievers into Ivies) once said that to get into an Ivy you have to present yourself as the most fascinating zoo animal the admissions officer has seen to get in. I think about that a lot.

You know how people have a wistful nostalgia for a time they never experienced? Like how people seem to obsess over America's jazz age with ridiculous speakeasy bars? I think there's no example that's cuter and more charming than Japan's "Ivy-League Style"

Being yourself is often misunderstood as appealing to some abstract, !non existent, notion of yourself. It’s really just not lying to yourself about what you want. Which might be harder than inventing an entire identity.

After eating at 53 different 3 Michelin-Starred restaurants, I've finally eaten at the last restaurant on my bucket list. There is no longer any restaurant that I have a burning desire to visit at least once in my life. Odd feeling. Time to close this chapter?

This is me after about 3 years of ~8-10 hours a week of practice. I also scored in the bottom 1% of the population for gross motor coordination. The army didn’t allow me to hold a gun or grenade for safety reasons!

You can become middling at something with an hour of practice a week. You can become good at something with an hour of practice per day. Both of these options leave you 6+ hours left over, every day.

I heard you wanted fat marbled with beef? 60-day dry aged olive wagyu. The cow is raised on a diet of toasted olive peels which is a by-product of making olive oil. Will be searing with olive oil later and then using the drippings to cook fried rice.

Being conventionally attractive actually sucks. It's a God-given depreciating asset, and if you think that you're successful because of pretty privilege, you'll always have the insecurity of not knowing when your success will be taken from you.

It is fairly trivial to bruteforce your way into the top 5-10% of a field in a short period. To push into true mastery (say top 0.1%) takes proper blood, sweat, and tears. But the average person thinks the gulf between them and top 5% is much larger than between 5% and 0.1%

THE MORTALITY RATE IS NOT THE PROBLEM (for now; thread) The number of deaths is a function of: the virus, demographics, number contacts with infected and medical attention. The last two are subject to multiplicative dynamics. 1/N

I think an aesthetic identity should be cultivated, but not manicured. Having a coherent aesthetic identity helps to ground you, but having an aesthetic identity that is modeled after what you want to be rather than who you are will lead to dissonance. 6/
