Shottr — Screenshot app for Mac for Designers and UI Developers
Joined November 2020
#4 The app is free, there's a $10 "Friends Club" in-app purchase. Maybe access to some experimental features, or to a Discord channel, but mostly just the bragging rights.

Btw, I was convinced that mouse-driven handwriting will look awful, but then I found @tldraw and it changed my mind. This tool is a big source of inspiration for me these days.

#2 Licensing. A digital license is free, a physical license (a postcard) is $10, and a boxed edition on a floppy disk is $50. Would also highlight how small the app is. Shottr dmg spilled over the accepted 1.44mb a couple of releases ago : (.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the whole "Pin Screenshot" idea was pioneered by @eternalstorms in his ScreenFloat back in 2010. He's building a new, modern, and terrifyingly polished ScreenFloat 2.0 as we speak. It's going to be 🔥.

#1 Postcardware. The app is free, but you should send me a postcard. I wanted it badly in the early stages, now I would've choked in the mail.

#7 Make Shottr fully paid, announce the change well in advance, and raise the price by a couple of bucks every week. Would be fun to see FOMO driving sales. Once done there’s no going back though.

Huh, that really took off. Is the feature hot or did I get lucky with Twitter algo? Anyway, just so you know guys, there’s also a newish app @XnapperHQ, it does similar trick in a really clever way.

@SnazzyQ Wow, thank you for putting a fun spin on Shottr! I’ll use it to prove that this little nerdy app is in fact cool : ).

#3 The app is free, cloud upload is for a fee. Turned out there's little interest in image uploading these days.

@ldenoue Nope, pure AppKit. Took a bit of work but it’s more robust and gives a better performance.

@timberhines123 Hi! Sorry to hear about the problem. macOS Beta have a habit of breaking things here and there. Apple usually fix those problems before the stable release, but you never know. Last year they addressed the permission issue in one of the last betas (September-ish).

#5 Make "Capture Area" paid feature. Would nudge users in the right direction. Shottr workflow is quicker and more efficient with fullscreen + crop, but people are used to cropping the area before the shot is made. It’s a tough habit to break. Decided it'd be too cruel.

@GianPaJ I've actually did some progress since the thread, will launch payments in a couple of weeks. Going to keep the app free but will also add two paid tiers. Free and paid tiers are not very different, so yeah, pretty much like Sublime.
