Meesho's #WorkFromAnywhere policy in a nutshell : - Every employee decides whether they want to work from office or home or a hill-station - A week-long meetup every quarter in Bangalore (our HQ), with travel & accommodation fully funded by the company (1/2)

One of my favourite traditions at Meesho is user-calling. Almost every new joinee is expected to call ~50 users before they start working on any project. It's crazy how many 'fancy' ideas go to trash within 10 minutes into the call with a Tier-3 user. ⚡️

Meesho employees can now convert upto 25% of their salary to special ESOPs (called MeESOPs) which vest 100% in 1 year. Not just this, the company adds a top-up multiplier (upto 1.25X) every time someone does this. So a 10L conversion would actually give you 12.5L of ESOPs.

A major learning we had while building Meesho was that an ideal design for a Tier-2/3 user looked extremely boring to cool people like us. The silver lining - it helped us hire designers who cared more about users than pretty portfolios.

Don't try hard to predict the success of that early-stage startup you want to join. Even the best VCs are wrong majority of the times. Instead, just pick a great team. A team you won't regret working with even if the startup shuts down.

While our ESOP buyback makes the news every year, what doesn't get covered is how most employees choose to HOLD almost all their stocks, sometimes even taking cash-cuts during appraisal to go for more ESOPs. When so many employees act like owners, magic happens✨

One of the most underrated PM traits is the willingness to do the unsexy work. Too many people join product only for the fancy decision-making, and later end up being frustrated. Long-term wins happen by doing the mundane tasks over and over again.

Most features we built in Meesho in the past few years have followed the same philosophy. Product Managers would run dozens of experiments with no-code tools, sometimes for months. @viditaatrey would make sure that PMs don't get engineering bandwidth unless they did this.

Product Management sometimes is about finding different ways of saying 'No'. - "We will definitely evaluate this." - "Will pick it up as soon as we have the bandwidth." But the most killer one... - "We will do it in V2".

Our founders used to accept orders on WhatsApp and log them in a Google Sheet. To fulfil every order, they had to go through a courier website and manually process bank transactions. All this sounds painful - but provided tremendous velocity to experiment & iterate.

The funny thing is that even before this policy was launched, it was common to find employees taking cash-cuts in appraisals to go for more ESOPs. All we did was make this formal, and make the deal sweeter. More about it here -

Some side-benefits of doing this - - PMs got to speak to users regularly because they were running so many experiments on WhatsApp. - If something didn't work, it was easy to discard it and move on to the next thing.
