2/3 of CSS should be let go. E.g. if you compare what RN supports and what browsers support, you will have a decent idea. Fun fact: it is how Flutter started - the Chrome team tried to build a faster renderer with smaller set of supported APIs.

without even reading the doc, as a person who built a renderer that renders all that stuff, I can assure you, there is a performance cost here. there is a hidden wisdom in the classic zIndex model that allows a bunch of optimizations. I suspect in the early days nothing would work without such tricks.
