A former Massachusetts cannabis regulator says the Biden administration is "mischaracterizing" the impact marijuana rescheduling, and she's cautioning that big alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical firms are "waiting in the wings" to control the market.
I say this as a Sanders supporter: Warren’s amazing and she would be the best president we’ve ever had. It needs to become socially unacceptable to trash her. I am sick of my TL full of attacks by people who don’t have 1/100th of her brains or her shade or her tenacity. Grow up.
Rachel Hoffman died 14 years ago today. She was caught w/< 1 oz of cannabis. Police told her the only way out of prison was as an informant and forced her to buy 1500 ecstasy pills, cocaine and a gun. During the botched sting she was murdered with the gun she was supposed to buy.
The look on Elizabeth Warren’s face while she weighed giving it all up and destroying Joe Biden after he took credit for getting her the agency that she willed into existence singlehandedly. Maybe the most relatable presidential candidate moment for all women thus far

I have to mute this but please know that laws legalizing marijuana are being perverted and twisted to extract every possible penny for police departments and to enrich businesses owned/led by former officials who fought legalization. There's a lot we can and should do to stop it.
How dare anyone with authority post MLK-related platitudes when we still don’t know what happened to

This is bad and I think you will regret saying it. Did you see the lines in Chicago? Crowds in poorly ventilated rooms, high-risk people giving up after waiting hours? Not only is it nothing to be gleeful about, it’s nothing short of criminal. I’d say that regardless of who won.

This is a terrible decision. Purposely pushing people into the illicit market — precisely where the dangerous products are — goes against every principle of public health and harm reduction. It is dangerous, short-sighted, and undermines the benefits of legal regulation.
NEW:
@CharlieBakerMlA
is ordering a 4-month ban on all vaping products and declaring a public health emergency in wake of rise in vaping-related illnesses
I live in one of the most diverse cities in MA. Two weeks ago at a coffee shop, a woman and her boyfriend told me to “go back to my country.” It escalated to the point where she was arrested. This is an ongoing, coordinated attack to dehumanize POC and encourage such behavior.
@nycsouthpaw
I don’t care about her at all as an Indian or as a woman, but as someone who likes to angrily respond to trolls with 38 followers at 2am, this a historic level of representation
Let me save some time by putting out there that if you are not engaged in social justice work, my rate to speak at your 420 event is $2,000. If I'm being added to "add diversity," it's $5,000. If a white man will be using the word "well intentioned" at any point it's $2 billion
To be clear, the vaping ban:
-was ruled an unauthorized use of power by a court
-turned out to be unsupported by data (to the extent any data was even collected)
-was not followed by even one other state
-was forced to end six weeks earlier than scheduled
It is difficult to unite the entire marijuana community because it’s so large and multifaceted. I appreciate people like Alex Berenson and Allysia Finley who manage to put forth falsehoods so batshit and repulsive that they easily unite all of us and remind us what we do and why.
If you consider yourself a respectable marijuana journalist and you’re sharing a Congresswoman’s “bong photo” that was published without her consent (and has nothing newsworthy in it whatsoever), you are a disappointment and you can do better.
I say this as someone who has worked for cannabis legalization for 20 years: Until we have a plan to keep Big Tobacco out of the market, we're not ready for federal legalization. More in this op-ed from me and

Evanston, IL will be the first city in the U.S. to give Black people cash reparations.
The city council approved the initial $400,000 of payments for Black families affected by discriminatory practices. It has agreed to pay $10 million to eligible families over 10 years.

Today is officially the last day of my term as commissioner. It feels auspicious that it turned out to be a time of historic progress for patients and equity businesses. Staying as a holdover so no goodbyes yet. I am grateful for each day I serve in this position.
Booking my 5-year-old’s birthday at Chuck E Cheese and I see they have an alcohol selection. I try not to get too distracted by cannabis-alcohol comparisons, but wow, the stigma and judgment I read on social consumption vs. the fact that YOU CAN DRINK WINE AT CHUCK E CHEESE 🤯
Good morning. Prohibition doesn’t work, and the idea that a ban on regulated products is equivalent to any kind of “pause” of use is a fundamentally flawed assumption out of line with everything we know about how people use substances, especially addictive ones like nicotine.
Maybe because illnesses went up, deaths went up, family-owned businesses went bankrupt, people went back to cigarettes, your own administration says they still don’t know the cause, and all of this appears to have been collateral damage to pass a totally unrelated ban on flavors?
I decided a long time ago not to care if random online losers think I’m fat, and next thing I knew at age 34 I was winning a lifetime achievement award for the reform of drug policy. It’s amazing what one can do with all that saved mental energy 🤷🏻♀️✌🏽
That caffeine is a fun little boost in your day, but ~drugs~ are bad and only for bad people
That alcohol is unique and needs to be in its own category because you use it and you don’t use ~drugs~
Huge step forward by
@BetoORourke
. Anything less would perpetuate, not eliminate, the racial disparities that are the hallmark of prohibitionist policies. It’s heartening to see him continue his long history of leading on drug policy by embracing this.
I admire you generally,
@SenKamalaHarris
, but how can you tweet about this every day using both your accounts and not cosponsor any of the federal marijuana bills? POC are going to jail. I could go to jail. Please don’t use this issue for popularity until you’re doing something.
Instead of going after drug cartels, and violent crime, and major traffickers, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is going after recreational marijuana users. That’s not being smart on crime.
In light of the news that Big Tobacco's Lunchables contain lead and other poison, here's a thread about how we can stop these people from taking over cannabis. You may want to bookmark this for later.
Free advice. There is no situation in which anyone wants to hear you talk about:
1) How you don’t see color
2) Your proximity to POC
3) How you’re not racist
Print this out and hang it up if it will be helpful
Yesterday we found out the state stopped sharing children hospitalization rates: today we find out the state is planning to stop tracking cases in schools altogether. To make decisions that aren’t based on data and then hide the data. This is unacceptable.
I love that bail funds are so overwhelmed with $ they’re asking people to donate elsewhere. I love that racist Rep. King is gone. I love that U. of Minnesota severed ties with the Minneapolis PD. I love that this uprising is Black-led. I really love the PEOPLE of this country.
I don’t think Rules Committee Chairman
@RepMcGovern
has been properly acknowledged for so clearly representing the people of MA and where they are on cannabis and the racist drug war. Watch this clip from yesterday’s hearing and if you agree, join me in sending him a thank you.

Today I saw a Republican man who used to call for the death of drug traffickers not only vote for legal marijuana businesses, but also add sensible, robust conditions to the approval to make their operations more reparative for POC and people with disabilities.
WE did that.
The me who calls for legalizing and regulating all drugs is the same sensible me who is currently googling the caffeine content of a store-bought coffee drink and measuring it out in a measuring cup so I don’t get overcaffeinated. It’s actually the lamest least radical thing ever
Good news: I think the chaos is over. As of this week, the CCC should have both the authority and the data to create evidence-based THC vape regulations. So there’s now a clear path to rational policy based on science and data. That’s what this has been about the whole time.
I wrote a letter to the New York Times about the anti-science, 1930s-era cannabis hysteria a few people seem to think is trendy right now.

Whole Foods in Melrose.
How’s the vape ban working out where you live? 😔
I’ve never said this before: federal legalization is coming. We need to form one powerful coalition of activist organizations, prevention experts, and criminal justice experts to stand up against profit-focused lobbying for max commercialization. We need it NOW. Pulling the alarm
NEW: House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said today that his panel may be taking up marijuana reform legislation “fairly soon.”
The news comes in response to a prod from
@mattgaetz
.
We need to end this vaping ban immediately. The dangerous products are coming from the illicit market. When the death toll is rising every day, we can’t afford to keep pretending we don’t know the difference. People need access to tracked, regulated products.
@WBrownsberger
What do you know - the drug that was making people sick in New Haven has absolutely nothing to do with cannabis. It’s called fubinaca and it was developed by Pfizer. Retract all your lazy, sensationalist headlines please.
The most frustrating thing about being a public official right now is that the system you work within is intentionally designed to serve the people in power and make incremental change very difficult, and transformative change near-impossible. And it does great at that goal.
I’m fed up. Unless I have a professional or ethical obligation otherwise, I will cut out of my life anyone who enables or encourages bombing brown people. Not this decade. I’m grown now and I will use any bit of influence I have toward stopping another war. I hope you’ll join me.
The MA "drugged driving" bill that could have punished you for eating an edible a week before driving is DEAD. Lawmakers declined to advance it.
Thank you Sen.
@JamieEldridgeMA
and colleagues for making decisions based on science not stigma.
New evidence confirms what we all knew. Governor Baker’s vape ban should go down in history as one of the worst cannabis regulation mistakes ever made. I wrote what I couldn't say as commissioner:
My new short and practical paper, "Bigger is Not Better: Preventing Monopolies in the National Cannabis Market" is out now. It's free and open to the public thanks to
@OSULawDEPC
.
Read it here:
Credit to the Boston Herald for capturing the symbolism of what happened here. Black cannabis farmers were not only sidelined -- when they spoke up about it, the corporations running the so-called "farmers' market" called the police on them.
The Boston Cannabis Board, which I believe is four of five people of color, just sent a very strong statement at their first licensing meeting about their priorities and how seriously they take diversity plans. Applicants should be paying attention.
Liberal politicians dogged refusal to acknowledge the very real harm caused by COVID (auto immune disease, heart attacks, stroke etc) has given huge credence to anti vaxxers who wrongly place the blame for these health issues on the vax. Good piece on this
Marijuana was decriminalized in NYC, but your police aggressively and systematically forced Black and Latino people to empty their pockets and then arrested them for marijuana being in “public view” to circumvent decriminalization laws. How about drop out and pay them reparations
I have apologized for taking too long to understand the impact of stop and frisk on Black and Latino communities.
I inherited stop and frisk. In an effort to stop gun violence, it was overused. I cut it back by 95%.
I should have cut it back sooner.
As I wrote in my anti-monopoly paper, limits like this stifle a fair and open market. They create a bidding war to reward businesses with the most resources to portray a winning application, undermining equity. Note that medical operators were exempted and given their own rules.
Connecticut starts accepting cannabis license apps today. They are going to award -TWELVE- retail licenses, six of which will be for equity applicants.
The population of Connecticut is 3.5 million.
In comparison, Oregon has 4.2 mil ppl and had >600 retail shops in 2020.
I love this because I so clearly remember watching a professor I had never heard of named
@EWarren
explain the bailouts on
@jonstewart
in 2009, inspiring me to realize I didn't want to be part of that system. I know Lina Khan did the same for countless young lawyers yesterday.
Thanks to
@jonstewart
for having me on to talk about
@FTC
’s work to lower the cost of asthma inhalers, the importance of holding corporate executives accountable for lawbreaking, and how monopolies can use their power to bully, coerce, and censor speech.
This is what I replied to the Warren volunteer who texted me, and it’s what I’d say to all Warren supporters.
Progressives — take a deep breath, focus, and support each other. The establishment has nothing. Their only hope is to divide us and scare us into giving up our power.
I'm part of a psychedelics bar association panel this week examining the intriguing question of what can be learned from cannabis when it comes to evolving psychedelics culture + policy + law. If you've been around cannabis long enough to learn lessons, what would you highlight?
We need a nickname for the people who try to ram through corporate-friendly, no-home-grow, inequitable legislation with lofty lines like, "Every day we don't pass this law is another day that vulnerable people are being arrested and incarcerated for marijuana in this state."

just made a solid, detailed promise to legalize marijuana and ensure the opportunities go not to Wall Street but to black + brown communities, with the tax revenue reinvested into those communities most harmed as well as ownership and job opportunities 👏🏽
The war on drugs’ militarization of police has set a standard letting them consider SWAT equipment and weapons to be appropriate for nonviolent drug busts. At that scale imagine what they think is appropriate for a protest. It’s one reason why we’re seeing them so out of control.
Obviously, ending the war on drugs won’t end racism—OBVIOUSLY—but it will remove a major excuse that police use to harass, brutalize and traumatize black people hundreds of times a day—every single day—in this country.
In honor of both me and
@tomangell
’s birthdays this weekend, please denounce this trash and never ever support greed-based legalization bills that don’t allow home grow.
My verbatim response to "What do you say to prohibitionists who say marijuana legalization is just the tip of the spear for the legalization of all drugs?" was "Yup, it is"

I’ll agree that we should decriminalize one drug at a time when you can name one drug for which arrest and incarceration has been an effective strategy.
Everybody wants to talk about small and minority-owned cannabis businesses until it's time to write a law. Then they don't exist and don't matter. And if you raise it, the twilight-zone response is, "Oh don't worry, we have expungements covered."
The one and only hearing on the governor’s vaping ban is this Friday at 10:30am at 250 Washington St.
If the turnout is proportional to the damage it’s caused, the room should be so full you should be able to bodysurf.
But I haven’t seen it advertised much. Spread the word?

On the same day the U.S. House voted to legalize marijuana, the Massachusetts legislature finally directed marijuana tax revenue to fund reinvestment into disproportionately harmed communities like the voters intended. Just wonderful. What a day!

Don’t believe the false dichotomy that our only choices are to keep arresting people or to roll out a red carpet for national big businesses. We should legalize possession now but take a slow, informed approach to interstate sales. More in my op-ed today:
Step 1: find a crisis
Step 2: create a panic with a strong fear-based sense of urgency but a weak sense of direction
Step 3: choose a population to target
Step 4: use 2 to make a false connection between 1 and 3
Step 5: 🚓
