Had gone on the show, wondering what I might have to say about NI/EU trade rule changes & planning reforms - but I should have known that even these issues will be dragged into explanations that blame immigrants... Love representing @RunnymedeTrust

"I think by always making every issue, always bringing it back to immigration does the really damaging poisonous work of encouraging racism" @shabnabegum from @RunnymedeTrust. Spot on. Migrants are being scapegoated for the consequences of political decisions by successive govts

Yep, I want to live in a cohesive community but focusing on 'more social contact' doesn't fix racism or austerity and risks exonerating govt/s from their active promotion of both.

The British establishment is promoting ‘community cohesion’ projects as a solution to racist street violence — conveniently ignoring their role in enabling the rise of the far right, writes @shabnabegum.

'Community cohesion' approaches offer palatable 'solutions' but they downplay racism and austerity and often blame the very people who have been victimised by this summer's brutal violence.

We are alarmed by proposals which focus on community cohesion as a response to the worst racist violence in Britain in a generation It blames people of colour for failing to ‘integrate’ -framing the victims of the violence as its cause 🧵

From beginning, the inquiry refused to investigate racial discrimination; this omission explains why it does not report on structural racism or understand the incentives/insensitivities of why w/class, people of colour are more likely to live in housing that's not fit for purpose

As we said this summer, prisons (and now exclusions) do not fix the problem of racism. Addressing structural racism and the material inequalities it imposes is critical. @bphillipsonMP must make anti-racism an education priority and support school communities.

New term bout to start. How will sch communities be supported to address the racist violence that we witnessed over holidays? Building anti-racist schs should be a govt priority, relying on exclusions is not a long term answer. Children reflect society.

4/ And really importantly, it talks about the importance of including civil society orgs and that EHRC needs to operate as a more independent and credible national org if it is to fulfll its mandate.
