Reflection on the education budget proposals for two fiscal years (2018 and 2024). In 2018, education was divided into two ministries, and in 202,4, it was one ministry. In the 2018 Budget Proposals presentation by Hon Kenneth Mathambo, the education ministries were budgeted as follows; 1. Ministry of Basic Education P7.97 billion (16.7%) 2. Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology P4.75 billion (10.5%) In the 2024 Budget Proposals presented by Hon Peggy Serame, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development was budgeted for P15.54 billion (24.4%) The bulk of the recurrent budget is used for salaries, allowances, operational costs for state-owned enterprises, and tertiary education financing. Under the development budget, the Ministry usually shares the remaining balance with other ministries and departments. πŸ“· The Botswana Gazette

Everything starts at home The 2024 Junior Certificate (JC) results have again ignited a debate about what went wrong. Yes, we have been concerned about the poor results and the state of our education for a long time. It's time for systemic change, and policymakers have a crucial role to play in this. Our education system is centred around three people: parent, learner, and teacher. It should be a tripartite system in which the three work together to better the learner. Under the teacher, the government has to ensure adequate teaching and learning material, a well-equipped classroom, and the welfare of teachers, among other things. This is to enable teachers to be productive and effective in their work. The learner must show unwavering commitment and a strong desire to pass and go onto the next level of education. This commitment is not just self-built, but also nurtured by the parents at home. Most importantly, the learner should be made aware of why they must go to school and be encouraged to put more effort into their learning. Of course, the parents have to play their part at home. Their role is not just significant, it's integral in the development and upbringing of their children. The entire family setup should play a role in child development, and parents are at the forefront of this. Yes, there are problems in some families, such as financial difficulties, lack of parental involvement, or even domestic issues, that contribute to not having the kind of learner we would have loved to have in the school environment. Believe me, some teachers will go above and beyond to assist some families with the challenges of raising a child. My takeπŸ™

I wish the current administration could take out the belowπŸ‘‡documents from the shelves and dust them off. The solutions are there. The Revised National Policy on Education (RNPE) of 1994 and the Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan (ETSSP) 2015-2020

@Sophie_Mokoena @PaulKagame This is not a good way to build Africa we can all be proud of. There should be a way to amicably come with solutions.

I have spent nearly 2 hours reading President Trump's Executive Order and its impact on the world, especially Africa. I am asking myself to what extent will EO on America πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ withdrawal from WHO will affect Africa 🌍. The article about this withdrawal on ABC News reports that even health experts in America are worried. Are we caught off guard by this unexpected announcement? How ready are we to adapt to President Trump's decision?

I am not sure if it's too early to say that. But I see political will at the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education. Education is the foundation. So, the foundation must be solid to hold the building blocks of other sectors.

@mashobanekabhej @Sophie_Mokoena @duma_boko The process is not mandatory. It is upon the convict to apply for clemency to the President. What I don't know, however, is whether the President is informed when they are to be hanged

There is a lot we can learn from the American system. President Trump is implementing what he promised during the campaigns. Rona, we focus on firing and hiring people and investigating who might have stolen from the government. By the time the real mandate could begin, 2029 is here, and the campaigns start, which, by nature, disrupt government business. Then, we rush to address people's expectations with piecemeal programmes for political expediency and relevance. Those given state power can do better.

The Botswana education system needs to be attended to and determined whether public education is slowly being turned private. It is only fair to the parents to be told well on time that they will be expected to buy stationery for their children.
