The longer the shot path, the more perfect we have to be. The direction change that comes as a result of not establishing angle low makes for potential issues later in shot. Holding onto the ball longer than needed usually not a good thing.

Shooting a basketball is a skill. I don’t care how tall, small, skinny, heavy, short, etc. you are. YOU 100% are in control of how good you can become at it.

Push vs Pull. The less direction change, the more power + accuracy in placing the ball where you want it to go. Unlike a quarterback throw or baseball pitch, a basketball begins it's path to the target the moment it begins to move. Keep Shooting #basketball

A basketball has no energy, but if it did the path it would take from floor to hoop would be a perfect arc with no direction change. To create an smooth shot, focus on an efficient shot path. How close to the “perfect” path can you keep the ball on? #basketball

Stressing over elbow position while shooting? You might want to reconsider. Overdoing it can have adverse effects. Turn focus to getting your shooting hand and elbow underneath the basketball. We're still in position to push through the middle of the ball. #basketball

Coverage Matters! Spread fingers to optimize control. Skinnier we make our hand, the more perfect we have to be! Spread fingers using the pinky, ring & thumb as the rails that hold the ball in place & the index/middle as the 2 fingers pushing through the middle of the ball.

Early on when teaching connection I have kids pretend there are strings attached to their elbows.  When the strings are pulled the ball gets closer to the body.  It's an easy way to exaggerate where the ball can start  to lessen direction changes in the shot itself.  #basketball

Shoot with ease! 🏀 Set the angle before the ball moves & maintain it by loading hands & rotating the shoulder as if running. Collapsing the angle can result in loss of power & direction change. Simplify your shot - don't ADD movement, SUBTRACT it! #basketball

Mindful Work > Volume. Shooting 1,000 shots/day w/ no primary focus doesnt guarantee results. Take focused approach, even if it takes less shots. Ever read a book mindlessly & 300 pgs later you can’t retain anything? Can get more out of 1 chpt w/ focus then a whole book w/out

I’ve learned that waking up early & getting in weight room 1st thing does 2 things. Tests your discipline & Destroys narratives you tell yourself about why you’re not where you want to be. There’s work in front of you to be done. Whether that work gets done is 100% up to you.

Stacking our balance with drops gives us a true 'foundation'.  Balance might be the most talked about but overlooked aspect of shooting the ball.  Our FOUNDATION should be just that!  It should serve as the catalyst to stillness, power and repeatability within the shot mechanics.

You do not have to be strong to shoot from further away. Understand sequence + connection & you can start piecing together what it means to make that ball become a part of YOU and the energy YOU create. Getting strong will serve in addition should to proper sequence.

Lastly - it’s imperative that youth coaches do not pigeonhole players in regard to their roles. Telling a kid he is not to shoot the ball can set the tone for how that kid thinks for many years to come. Sacrifice wins 4 development. Be the reason kids fall in love w/ the game.
