I built an audience of 14,400 in a tiny niche. Now, I'm helping business owners, thought leaders, and entrepreneurs do the same. 🎶 Classical musician 🎶
Finding your niche is hard.
I spent 10 years jumping from niche to niche, hoping something would work.
Finally, I found my perfect niche and was able to grow an engaged audience of 10,256 people.
Crazy part?
All I had to do was find the answers to Three Core Questions.
Hey there! I'm Monique.
In 2021, I quit my corporate job with no backup plan.
My objective?
Find a way to monetize my creativity.
In recent months, I've managed to do just that!
But my journey to this point was far from linear...
Here's the CliffNotes version of my story:
Fancy edits, special effects, and motion graphics aren’t nearly as important as people think…
The most important aspect of a video will always be the IDEA!!
I learned this lesson first-hand:
I questioned why my crappily edited video, with trash graphics (lookin’ like it was
Midjourney is by far one of the most valuable tools you can use as a video editor!
Especially if you’re in the video essay niche!
Oftentimes, you might find yourself struggling to find suitable B-roll for a particular part of your script.
You might end up searching high and
Man, editing is sooooo much more pleasant when you don't have to worry about changing scenes every 4-6 seconds...
As if I'm trying to entertain a toddler....
I'm so over "retention" editing.
Good riddance!!!
Just hit the 10,000 subscriber milestone! 🥳
(My 12-year-old self would be jumping for joy right now!)
Honestly, I don't think I would've gotten here if it wasn't for the fact that I'm in a niche I love.
Although it's relatively obscure, my passion for it was the driving
Waking up to this feels kinda nice!
It used to be dry as hell on my account...
The only difference I've made since then is engaging more.
It seems to be working out!
Just entered the 4-figure club! 😎
I've only ever hit the 1,000 follower mark on one other platform (YouTube).
But let me tell you: hitting this milestone on 𝕏 was 100x more difficult!
I felt like I had to fight tooth and nail for every follow! 😂😂
Retention editing is dying…
…and I couldn’t be happier!
Like me, a lot of people are becoming sick of the ultra fast-paced, 30-transitions-per-minute, Mr. Beast, anxiety-inducing, ADHD style of editing that has been at the forefront for the last couple of years.
In many
Midjourney has been instrumental in creating unique B-rolls for my edits.
When combined with the capabilities of Photoshop and After Effects, the possibilities are truly endless!
Here is a recent sample edit I made using a clip from
@MetOpera
in which I used midjourney
Passed 300 followers on 𝕏 and 9,000 subscribers on YouTube all within 48 hours.
Feels nice!
That sweet, sweet 10,000 figure is so close, I can taste it!
My first giveaway is doing better than I ever could've anticipated!
But man...it's getting a little hard to keep up with all the requests! 😅
It's a great problem to have.
I have to run a few errands right now, but I'll get back to everyone as soon as I return!
4k+ views, 50+ comments, and 300+ likes in two days.
This past weekend, I uploaded my best long form video to date.
This wasn’t accidental–it was the result of carefully considered choices.
Here are the 3 changes I’ve made this time that led to the success of this video. 🧵
You know, I was gonna leave this alone (since the person in question is incredibly toxic),
but I’m sharing only because I think there's a lesson to be gleaned here.
As some of you know, if you spend enough time in the educator space, you'll inevitably hear this mantra:
"Make
Mozart died just 2 months shy of his 36th birthday–one of the greatest losses in music history.
But what made it 10x worse was that he passed at the very moment when his fortunes were finally turning around.
My latest video explores the tragic end of his short life:
@vidIQ
Getting 1,000 subs is actually quite easy with shorts.
However, getting watch time is 1000x more difficult, imo.
I have a solid grasp on shorts, but getting the same amount of views on my long form videos has proven to be an incredible challenge.
@chadasianwife
@bonchieredstate
I will NEVER understand these types of women who pull out their cameras, angle it just right, hit record, start crying, rewatch it, then upload it for the whole world to see!!
When I'm crying, I don't even wanna look at myself in the mirror. 🤣🤣🤣
My very first giveaway went absolutely NUTS!
100K impressions
+200 Email subs
+500 Followers
+ (???) leads
Now, I was hoping for a good response...
But THIS...this was something else...
So many of you have been asking:
"Monique, how did you do it?!?"
And honestly, I don't
You know what really sucks?
Having a mind full of ideas but nobody to share them with.
This is something I used to deal with...
I'd share my thoughts and opinions but nobody would give me the time of day.
I quickly grew tired of being ignored.
So what did I do?
I learned
I've never seen any of my videos get such a high amount of views from browse...
I'll take this as a very good sign! I'm landing on the homepage!
(stats from latest vid)
“Maaan, who gives a crap about classical music?!”
This was the thought that prevented me from taking action.
Since I was a kid, I’d dreamt of having my own YouTube channel…
A place where I could discuss my obsessions with people who had the same interests.
But I had no faith
Crossed 12k subs today!
I’m still so amazed that this many people enjoy me ranting and raving about dead dudes. 🤣🤣🤣
But that just goes to show:
There’s an audience for EVERYTHING!
You’ve just gotta know how to attract them!
This is probably my favorite clip from my latest video.
The assets were created from the following AI tools:
• Photoshop generative fill
• Midjourney
• Magnific
• LumaAI
Y'all interested in seeing a breakdown? 👀
Rebrand COMPLETE!
How do y'all like it?
It's only a slight change, but it's more in line with the direction I'm heading in.
Speaking of which...
I'll be making a minor pivot towards more "faceless" content.
It's a suggestion that I received from my mentor, and I'm surprised
"Analysis paralysis" is such a sinister thing.
It's the Achilles' heel of perfectionists everywhere...
...A weakness that'll rob you of your precious time.
It's something that I've dealt with for a dreadfully long time, and I've only recently made major strides in ridding
And there it is!!
First YouTube goal accomplished!
10K views, 500 likes, and 100 comments in just under 10 days.
(Not to mention that the 1,000 watch time hours gained from this one, finally unlocked monetization for me.)
Now, I do have two other long form vids that are over
Short term YouTube goal:
have a long-form video crack 10,000 views in a month or less.
While I have a solid grasp on Shorts (I have quite a few with 100k+ views), I’ve yet to have a long-form vid hit those same numbers.
I’m hoping my next vid will be the first!
This is a friendly reminder to not neglect YouTube's community tab!
Nearly 1,000 of my subs have come from the community tab alone.
Not only will it foster engagement from your audience...
But it also allows you to reach those who've never consumed any of your content before.
500 people can fill a small theatre.
100 people can fill a lecture hall.
25 people can fill a classroom.
Imagine having a classroom full of people eager to hear from you.
Why then, do you take your 25 followers for granted?
I initially started a new channel with the goal of attracting an older, more mature audience.
However…
…I think my plans might’ve worked a bit *too* well. 😅😅

I used to be obsessed with vanity metrics.
"Wow, they have 1,000,000 subscribers! They must be doing great!!"
But in recent months, I've come to realize just how little these numbers actually matter.
I've observed one too many accounts with 100,000+ followers get 0 engagement.
Now that I’ve posted for a straight 6 months on here, I can say one thing for sure:
Growing on 𝕏 is 10x more difficult than growing on YouTube.
This platform is brutal!
But once you get the hang of it, the benefits will carry over to other platforms.
Last September, I made my first $1 online.
Two months later, I made my first $1,000.
It took almost a year of hard work, failure, experimentation and iteration to get to that point.
Good things take time.
Just be patient and stay focused.
Your time will come.
I chuckled when Google showed me all my previous time zone inquiries.
It's been a frequent question ever since joining 𝕏.
Being able to connect and do business with people from all around the globe truly is wonderful!
If you're just starting out on your content creation journey, remember this:
Nobody knows who you are.
Therefore, your first priority should be giving value to others.
Teach them.
Entertain them.
Create something that adds value to their lives.
Do that for a long enough
I recently came across one of the most intriguing channels I've ever seen.
@joostwitte5546
is a channel dedicated to showcasing the calligraphy of J.S. Bach–quill pen and all.
One of his most recent posts, a 90-minute video of him replicating a score in real time, is closing in
If you’re not utilizing the community tab on YouTube…
…you’re missing out on a fantastic way to build rapport and authority with your audience.
(Not to mention that it fosters engagement in between uploads)
Here's the structure I follow to maximize audience interaction!
The biggest YouTube lesson I've learned:
The idea is EVERYTHING!!
My latest long form video has done better than all my other long videos (in the first two weeks) for one reason:
The idea was better than all the others.
Now, I know to spend more time on ideation – it works!
17 views in 217 days.
I'd put so much effort into this video...
I'd spent nearly 40 hours editing it to perfection...
And yet, 17 views is all I had to show for it.
"Pathetic" doesn't even begin to describe this scenario..
→ I felt dejected
→ I felt frustrated
→ I thought
I failed to land my dream client...
...but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Perhaps a few of you remember a post of mine from a couple months ago–
the one where I expressed my disappointment in failing to sign this client.
I'd posted it right after learning that
630 days.
That’s how long it took YouTube to find the right audience for this particular video.
Sometimes, it all comes down to patience.
(This is still the craziest graph I’ve seen on any of my vids. Just look at that spike!)
I can’t get enough of these comments.
You know you’re doing something right when experts in your niche give you props.
It's such an honor to know that my little videos are being used in classrooms as learning materials.
My goal is to educate, and so this is a major W.
Small, niche communities are the future!
No matter what you're interested in...
No matter where your expertise lies...
No matter how strange you think your ideas might be...
It's 100% possible to grow and monetize a small, engaged audience in any niche.
Don't forget that!
Over the last 18 years, I’ve probably made 10 or so solid attempts at growing on YouTube.
The majority of those channels ended in failure – abandoned channels collecting dust.
However, my current channel is coming up on 10,000 subscribers.
So, what changed?
I can only narrow
I know I’m supposed to be “building my personal brand” and “focusing on business” here…
But am I allowed to post the clip that has me dying right now?? 🤣🤣🤣
Or is that too “unprofessional?”
(I seriously can’t breathe rn. 🤣🤣)
"You are the niche"
This is usually what beginners will quote when they want to be self-indulgent.
They take this one quote from Dan Koe and run with it...
...although they don't understand what he meant at all.
"You are the niche" doesn't mean that you get to talk about:
I think my latest video fully solidified my editing style.
The minimalist, vintage look is a perfect match for the history based content I produce.
What's even better, is that I barely used any stock footage for the project.
Everything was tailored to my style using the
I just finished making a 3rd version of this thumbnail.
Which do you prefer now?
I spent a lot of time considering what text to put in the thumbnail to trigger the most curiosity.
The text in (A) was previously "Shout, for I am deaf."
I just hit 1 million total impressions on 𝕏.
This brings my total number of impressions across both of my platforms to over 33 million.
A little over two years ago, I had 0 reach.
Although I had:
• Value to give
• Ideas to share
• A strong desire to connect
I did
Friendly reminder to try out new things as you grow your audience.
It seems like every time I was unsure of a post, my audience ended up loving it.
You're free to take risks, so take them!
"Who even cares about this?!"
I knew what niche I was passionate about...
But I didn't think anybody else would watch.
I wanted to make content around classical music history,
But I also didn't want to waste my time.
So instead, I opted to chase trends in niches I didn't
Look at this graph.
It shows the impressions from my YouTube community posts for the entirety of 2023.
Can you spot the point where I finally figured out what my audience wanted?
It should be pretty obvious.
So, what's the lesson here?
The moment you stop posting whatever
Sundays are perfect for catching up.
✧ Catching up on reading.
✧ Catching up on content planning.
✧ Catching up on the 1,042,739 comments and DMs on YouTube and 𝕏 that I still need to reply to.
(The number is an exaggeration, but that's how my introvert brain feels rn.)
Here's one of my biggest regrets:
Not getting started in content creation 10 years ago, using the resources I had available.
At that time, I was so caught up in securing the latest gizmos and gadgets.
"Once I get this new camera, then I'll start."
"Once I get this new
You're never too old to start creating online.
Get that limiting belief out your head.
If you're over 50, your decades of life experience can only enhance the content you create.
You might not think so, but that's a massive piece of leverage right there!
It really doesn't take that long to learn a valuable skill...
To those of you who’ve yet to develop a monetizable skillset, if you start learning one now, you’ll be earning sooner than you think!
That’s exactly what I did.
Last summer, I had the desire to learn graphic design
I'm in shock...
This is probably the fastest I've ever produced a video.
In just a single weekend, I've completed:
• The research
• The 1,800 word script
• 3 separate thumbnails
• Almost all of the voiceover
I've proven to myself that it can be done.
No excuses now.
Which of these two thumbnails would you click on?
On 𝕏, I've noticed that there are a whole lot of thumbnail experts who focus exclusively on IRL or "talking head" content.
I barely see anyone posting thumbnails for historical or just narrative content.
I might post more of
I’ve always had a bit of an obsessive personality…
I’d develop a budding interest in a certain topic, and before I knew it, my curious nature would inevitably lead me down the rabbit hole of info binges.
I’d consume every piece of material I could get my hands on just to
Just as I'm on the cusp of hitting 400 followers, the bot purge happens. 🤣🤣
But it's for the best!
I don't want any of these "DM me for a good time 😘" accounts on my page anyways!
