The spring 2022 edition of Acoustics Today is out where you can read my article "The Perception & Measurement of Headphone Sound Quality: What do Listeners Prefer"..
Frequency response measurements of 400 headphones sold in the market...A pretty embarrassing graphic for the state of our industry. There is no excuse for this.
@srossmktg
Well the best argument he makes is that Honorary doctorates are less valuable because they gave him one.
In fact, apparently quality control was on a vacation when they awarded him a BA unless it stands for Big Asshole. Quality control is also on a vacation at WSJ
Received these from Amazon a few days ago and here are the measurements. Pretty close to the Harman Target with a little extra bass. Measured on a GRAS 45CA-10 using the foam tips.
Ever compare ATMOS tracks from Tidal vs Apple Music and notice they sound different - besides spatially. Here is 1 minute of Elton John's RocketMan which on Tidal to me sounds brighter and thinner in the bass compared to Apple. This spectrum analysis confirms what I'm hearing.

I never thought Trump could be trumped when it came to lying. But George Santos takes fibbing to a whole new level. Sad that lying has become normalized in the name of power.
We've known since at least 1938 that SINAD or THD+N is not a useful measurement. The author says in 1938 "THD is not a measure of the degree of distastefulness to the listener, and it is recommended that its use should be discontinued".. We should have listened to D. Massa.
In my quest to find a good wired in-ear headphone I ordered this
@JBLaudio
Endurance Rum from Amazon for $19.98. It's amazing how little you can pay to get decent sound.
@SierraWhiskee
@jaketapper
@HillaryClinton
LOL If memory serves me correct Hillary conceded the next day of the election and never filed 50+ bogus meritless legal cases including 2 with the SCOTUS. Nice try
Wondering today how long before Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid’s Tale" is banned in Red States because of its negative representation of the dystopia in an authoritarian state where women become nothing more than human reproduction factories.

@BWildeMTL
If that happens I will remind them that 550k+ COVID deaths in the USA isn't exactly something to brag about and use as evidence against socialism.
Tracy Chapman's Fast Car was one of the original tracks we used to test loudspeakers at the National Research Council in 1988 and we continue to use it today. Why? Because it's once of the most sensitive test signals to hear resonances in loudspeakers and headphones. 1/2

talking at CanJam SoCal 2023 about how headphone measurements are influenced by positioning, unit variation and damping factor of the amplifier and its interaction with headphone impedance.
The average response of two headphones measured at the blocked canal of 14 listeners. The first example has good consistency, and people might agree on how it sounds.
The second sample has large variability across listeners, particularly bass, and they are not likely to agree.
A few years ago i was in London and came across this headphone bar. Appointment only. But such shops where you can audition expensive headphones are rare
Audio researchers throughout the world are working in labs studying how to deliver better rendered binaural audio using personalized HRTFs yet this study found 81% of listeners preferred listening to a KU100 to their own HRTF's. Quite baffling!
My weekend homework: Measuring some in-ear headphones on the B&K 5128B and the GRAS RA0045 ear simulator.
Want to guess which test fixture produces the most consistent measurements in the least amount of time?
The B&K 5128 HATS shown in the
@Harman
Hyperion Sphere, where we measure HRTFs (head-related tranfer functions)of humans and ( test mannequins) to understand their effect on the perception and measurement of sound and spatial quality.
Attended the presentation for this paper this am and the blue area shows the top 5 preferred headphones among the listeners measured on the B&K 5128 along with the Harman Target measured on the GRAS 45 CA Mod ( dotted line).
Another slide from my CanJam presentation plots three different proposed headphone targets for the B&K 5128 compared to the HARMAN target measured on the GRAS45CA-MOD. Notable are the large differences below 100 Hz, and between 3-5 kHz.
The top 6 rated stereo headphones in Consumer Reports: all Grado Models. Brent Butterworth measured the highest rated model (shownbelow) & concluded: If you’re technically minded .. there are some red flags here—a treble-heavy, bass-shy frequency response and a lot of distortion
I have spent the last few sleepless nights watching YouTube reviews of expresso machines, single dose burr grinders, and even a blind taste test on 7 different types of flat burrs. Expressophiles are even more obsessed than audiophiles if that if possible
A $700 Yamaha NS10 clone professional monitor vs. a $300 a pair
@JBLaudio
305p.
Why are we cloning 1980s mediocrity to mix music when audio science and technology have moved on??
This is a bad idea that only further contributes to audio’s circle of confusion
@BlaineLacross
I suggested this photo be taken as evidence that whatever heat these gentlemen receive for critiquing our research I hold no ill will towards them. We are all friends that share an enthusiasm to improve the science of headphone sound quality.
Last evening I gave a Keynote talk on "The Need For Headphone Personalization". I gave evidence of why we need it: to address differences in taste, hearing loss, headphone fit, and ear canal geometry; & how to measure and compensate for it. Here is an example of variance in fit.
Interesting. The Harman Target Curve is now being used to review performance of car audio systems including this B&O sound system in the Genesis GV60. I've never seen a review of a car with acoustic measurements of the sound system. This is new for me.
My
@Qudelix1
5k Bluetooth DAC headphone AMP arrived tonight. It is much smaller than I imagined. It will be easier to lose in the couch than a phone or Apple Remote.
The new
@JBLaudio
L4329P is a good example of Harman science being applied to optimize the sound quality of its products. I was blown away by these compact powered speakers yesterday and measurements tell you why.
You may or may not like Apple AirPods Max SQ but the consistency in bass response with multiple reseats is impressive. This is the response of both channels with 8 reseats. On the eight reseat I stuck a plastic swizzle stick under the left cushion to create a leak.
Here are 6 target curves for an IE headphone measured on a B&K 5128 headphone test fixture & evaluated by 13 listeners based on preference. The results were presented Sunday at the
@CanJam
in NYC. I consider this really a pilot test but the results were interesting nonetheless.
A new preferred Over-Ear Headphone Target Curve for Brüel & Kjær Head And Torso Simulator Type 5128 will be presented at the upcoming AES Fall Convention 2023
@sched
Yesterday I gave a tour of
@harman
R&D labs to 4 engineering students from
@harveymudd
college in Claremont California.
Hopefully these bright students will choose future careers in audio and acoustics like I did 30+ years ago :). I tried my best to show them why.
At the DTU acoustics department, where they have one of the largest anechoic chambers (10 ×10 × 10m), I've stood in and was used for Archimedes research project in the 1980s to study room reflectikns. Also, I got a demo in their virtual audio lab with 64 speakers.
@DTUtweet
I ordered a B&K 5128 table top HATS a few weeks ago based on a quoted delivery date of mid- June. Today, I get notice the shipping date is 12/29-2023. Not too happy.
Is the Harman IE Target Curve Dead? Not yet.
When measured on a BK5128, the shape of the curve is different but the sound is the same. And based on the listening test results presented at
@CanJam
NYC 2024 most listeners still like the sound compared to alternative targets.
I was just having a conversation with our marketing folks about the history of the
@AKGaudio
K371, and the name
@metal571
came up. Probably because of this YouTube review. I told them that he is waiting for an AKG open-back headphone tuned to the target.
@underHiswing914
@Politics_PR
Exactly. They no longer represent the face of America and are fading into old age and irrelevance. They will be remembered as a bunch of cowardly losers who didn't have the balls to face up to reality and their oath to serve and protect the people.
@crinacle
It’s a common belief that audio products are like ice cream & only 52 flavors can satisfy all tastes. But Audio reproduction is a science in the service of art (the music). Editorializing the music with 52 flavors of sound is a disservice to the art.
Is it possible to use EEG's of listeners' brains to recognize good sound quality from bad sound quality?
This study was able to use listener EEGs and a neural net to identify a speaker equalized 3 different ways with a 63% detection rate.
The past few days I participated in listening experiments where I judged the localization and sound quality of sounds reproduced through headphones that were processed w. different HRTFs including my own (measured sitting in this chair).
What a huge difference!!
@Harman
I just ordered one of these headphones for $42 that hits the Harman Target. Last pair in stock with Dec 7 delivery
TRUTHEAR x Crinacle Zero Earphone Dual Dynamic Drivers in-Ear Earphone with 0.78 2Pin Cable Earbuds (Zero)
There are some interesting people on the channel.

A new statistical ear shape model () developed based on CT image data of 224 people and is capable of highly expressive representation of a wide range of ear size, shape, and location right down to the ear drum. Impressive work!
One of the outputs from the Archie project at HARMAN is a set of mannequins whose anthropometric features cover the distribution of the test population we measured (350 people). You can see they vary significantly in size from the standard B&K 5128.
Someone asked me about "pinna gain"? When people here talk about "pinna gain" they often complain about too much 3-4kHz.
I suspect they are referring to ear canal resonance (5) which has nothing to do with the pinna and concha. Agree?
@AndrewFeinberg
True, otherwise I wouldn't need my green card to work in the US :) Also, if Trudeau were running the US there wouldn't be as many deaths and 71,000 new cases a day
Finally got around to listening to these. They have serious low bass and no sign of harshness or brightness. Decent ANC. Best of all they fit well, are light as in you hardly know you are wearing them At $47 a steal
The Type 4.3 ear simulator on the left has the newer more accurate acoustic impedance of an average ear but the form factor of the older GRAS IEC 60318-4 on the right is easier and faster to use and produces more repeatable results.
Can we not have our cake and eat it too?
At the
@Harman
Hyperion Lab today where we can measure and compare hundreds of human HRTFs with the accuracy of other sets of HRTFs including those produced by standard manikins like the 5128.
AKG K60 circa 1970s. To say that things have improved is an understatement. The headphone is advertised as "humanized" listening as they measured it with a mic inside the cups placed on humans.. But apparently they didn't ask humans how it sounded.
Here is the
@JBLaudio
Endurance Run 2 measured on two different test fixtures: The GRAS45CA-10 (left, purple curve) and the B&K 5128 (right, magenta curve). This is what I do late at night rather than sleep.
Almost finished an app to conduct method of adjustment listening experiments in 3-bands to determine a listeners' preferred target curve.
I think I have
@ResolveReviews
DF Target adjustment dialed in (Black Curve) but we won't know for sure until we test him.
Also, finally met in person the famous but enigmatic
@oratory1990
today in seminars and was embarrassed b/c I forgot his real name. That led to a rehearsal of the real names of

who like

are members of the audio witness protection program

What made me finally act? The Trump administration It taught me you cannot take for granted our freedom and rights outlined in our Constitution. You need to vote and fight every day for it. I’m ready.
The notion that professional studios have the bass under control better than consumer setups raises doubt based on a Genelec study of in-situ measurements of monitors in 164 control rooms Things quickly go south below 500 Hz.
Many visionaries (e.g. Einstein, Steve Jobs, Mark Twain) had cluttered working spaces. Einstein said “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?”
I think this mess in my dining room I created this weekend borders on genius.📷
@realsoundguys
Consumer research told us many people want to control their headphones and music without having to take their phones out of their pockets and purses or by touching sensors on the earphones which are often fussy to use. The screen gives you that option
We are developing a spatial training course to measure and improve how people perceive immersive sound in an AR/ VR environment. Early stages but here a subject is doing a localization experiment using a Meta display snd controller in VR to indicate the source position in space.
