In our new preprint with @Kwokszechai, @samgilbert1, @gluorokana and other wonderful collaborators, we used DTI and revealed the role of a temporal-frontal network in metacognition-driven cognitive offloading.

The preliminary results of this project were presented at VSS and ASSC last year, and I'm glad that we now have a manuscript of it.

Metacognitive noise manifests as a decrease in sensitivity (d') when computed based on confidence criteria versus decision criteria. We replicated this d’ drop with confidence ratings, and critically also found equivalent d’ drops for expectation and reward cues.

Firstly, we found that both expectation and reward cues could bias the decision-making criterionin a manner akin to placing the confidence criterion discriminating between low and high confidence in a decision.

In this new preprint (, with @DobyRahnev @Kai_Xue1201 @Mynameismedha, we investigated whether metacognitive noise, hypothesized to affect only Type-2 confidence ratings, also appears in Type-1 perceptual decisions influenced by expectations or rewards.

These results highlight a single system for Type-2 and Type-3 judgments. This raises the question of whether there is a unified system for all types of judgments (including Type-1), potentially challenging the prevalent two-system view of cognition and metacognition. 7/7
