One aspect of the Reiwa/Legendary period that I adore is the magnitude and weight given to Godzilla using his atomic breath. It’s something I feel the older films sorta took for granted but 2014 set the precedent that the charge up should be a real “stop and stare in awe” moment

Always hated the stigma that old Japanese Godzilla movies used “cheap cardboard buildings” and “dudes in crappy costumes” when the reality is simply just not that. Any time Hollywood uses miniatures though it’s like they pioneered the medium or something
Ages ago, I was talking with a guy about Kill Bill who gushed about the practical Tokyo set and how Tarantino used it. The minute I told him it was on loan from a Godzilla movie (2001’s GMK), his face soured and he immediately changed his tune. “Explains why it looked so fake.”

IMO the MV has proven that the best way to craft a lasting CU is to have the central films act as standalone events with minor connections to previous entries in terms of plot and use supplemental media like television shows to offer additional context. I call it Showa Plus
