Excited to announce the launch of Bikecoin 🚲💰. It's a triptocurrency. You mine Bikecoin every time you make a daily trip by bike. The funds you earn are automatically not-deducted from your bank account in the form of not buying gas.
This spike in gas prices will probably cost car-dependent folks more than any transit-funding or bike lane-building measure we’ve ever approved. But we won’t be left with anything to show for it. A bike network or expanded transit is an investment in community. Gas only burns.
As a bike advocate in a very Democratic city in a very Democratic state, I can unfortunately assure you that the Democrats do not want to take anybody’s car away.
Talked to my toddler about the coming restrictions & that her preschool might be closed. She was sad about not seeing her friends, but she told me she "doesn't want people to get sick." Calling adults who refuse to wear masks "whiny children" does a disservice to actual children.
For as much arguing and debating as we did over the Viaduct removal, pretty much the only thing nearly everyone agreed on was that if we removed the Viaduct, we should use that space for a waterfront park. And yet somehow this is what we got:
Saw a handful of
@Nikkita4Nine
volunteers asking everyone who entered U District Station is they had voted yet. They had a computer and a damn printer set up to help people print a replacement ballot from the King County website if they lost theirs. Such an impressive campaign.
No other voting system makes any sense after you have lived in a vote-by-mail state. It’s secure, easy and gives you time to research each decision before marking your choice. Every state should do this.
It’s 2020. You cannot conduct a poll that is half landline calls and then claim it represents the opinions of the people of Seattle. You just can’t. Who has a landline?
Here's a Pike Place Market idea we could test immediately: Put up signs that say "Deliveries only" and see what happens. Clueless tourists driving down Pike Place are doing absolutely nothing good for anybody.
Why isn't our nation treating this as an emergency? If you can't see in front of a car, then that car should be illegal on public streets. Seeing in front of you is a primary design need, not an optional feature.
Good story from
@nbcwashington
showing the dangers of SUV blind zones.
The reporter sat 9 kids in front of the vehicle; the driver couldn't see any of them.
Due to a protest at UW Station, the station is currently closed. Trains are bypassing the station. Riders going to UW Station can exit at Capitol Hill or U District and use the Link Shuttle Bus to get to UW Station. We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep you updated.
What I’m hearing in this story is that anyone could just put up eco blocks along existing street parking to create protected bike lanes, and the city won’t do anything about it. Or is it only ok to block public parking if your intent is to push around people without homes?
Lime announces program for people who qualify for any state or Federal assistance program. Folks will be able to buy 100 rides for $5 at any CVS or 7-Eleven and unlock bikes with a text if they don’t have a smart phone.
That sound you just heard was every single camera in Seattle taking a picture of the sunset. It’s been a while since we’ve been able to see one of those.
Seattle, your road is on Duwamish land. Build a safe crosswalk here. Skip the typical process and the pedestrian volume studies and all that B.S. and just build it.
Spent the morning fighting the Wallingford-Meridian Streetcar Historic District designation, but lost. Turns out, defeating it was never actually an option. The process was a genuine farce.
Dori Monson once had a whole blog post and show segment mocking the pronouns of a beloved non-binary bike adventure advocate who died in a horrible tragedy. I somehow convinced him via email to take the post down, but he clearly learned nothing.
To facilitate superyachts, the US Coast Guard has determined fixed bridges crossing Seattle’s Ship Canal (from Ballard to Fremont) must have at least 205 feet of vertical clearance, which is 70 feet taller than the Aurora Bridge. That's a big deal.
Story:
There should be a separate fast-track for Duwamish Tribe infrastructure requests. Like, if the tribe wants a sidewalk, they should get a sidewalk. They shouldn’t need to get in line with other neighborhood groups and compete for very limited funds.
The Duwamish Tribe is trying to gain safety improvements around its longhouse on five-lane West Marginal Way SW. The
@seattledot
reduced one travel lane, but the spot is far from walkable, to the river park nearby. Video:
Oh look, it’s
@SeaTimesOpinion
publishing a road rage rant in which someone anonymously muses on the idea of murdering people riding bicycles. Published in print and online. What on earth were they thinking?

When the Montlake Cut was completed, the level of Lake Washington lowered nearly 9ft. It's hard to picture what that means, but this 1903 photo of Denny-Blaine Park just blew my mind. The stone wall WAS A SEAWALL. And those old steps went down into the water. -Tom
Jason here must have made a mistake. He was supposed to post the 2021 City Council Position 9 vote, but accidentally posted the 1936 Seattle redlining map instead.
While biking by, I yelled at the anti-maskers waving COVID conspiracy theory signs on the NE 50th St bridge over I-5 and told them they were “fucking idiots.” I think I really I got through to them.
I will never understand why (mostly) men think accelerating quickly in a car makes them appear strong or impressive. You moved your foot like 6 inches.
Alex Pedersen opposed the 2016 Sound Transit 3 Levy. It’s 2019, and there are still “progressives” in Seattle supporting a Council candidate who opposed expanding regional light rail. WTF? Just b/c our city wasn’t choked with smoke THIS summer doesn’t mean the climate is ok now.
Seattle often ignores this part. We need more places where small-scale retail is allowed. More corner stores, etc, near more homes. It’s all part of the solution.
People walking have the legal right of way at unmarked crosswalks, which means nearly every intersection no matter how small. It should be the DOT's basic job to make every crosswalk safe, including unmarked crosswalks. It's twisted that no DOT seems to understand this.
Did you know there are over 200 water fountains in
#Vancouver
including new temporary water fountains to help

this weekend.
🚰 Check out our map to find where they are in your neighbourhood:
The King County Board of Health has repealed the bicycle helmet law. The primary sentiment was that they strongly recommend the use of helmets, but do not believe police enforcement is the correct method for achieving that public health goal. Background:
“battle for road supremacy”?!? What the hell are they talking about? Last I checked, people biking just wanted a bike lane and to not get hit. This
@seattletimes
headline is complete nonsense.
Seattle policy:
Using road space to keep people safe? Possibly allowed, but only after years of community organizing.
Blocking road space to displace people who can’t afford ever-increasing housing? Allowed immediately without any questions or community process.
Our state and city have once again failed to demonstrate that they actually mean it when they say safety is their top priority. Car traffic remains firmly at the top even a couple blocks from a brand new light rail station.
I can’t believe it took me this long to realize how Seattle can get some much-needed rain. Everyone needs to take off their fenders and forget their rain layers at home before biking to work tomorrow. Guaranteed rain every time.
I’m trying to be upset about
@MayorJenny
’s downtown bike lane delays, but my baby’s off her respiratory support! A big step closer to coming home from the hospital. I can’t wait until we can bike around our city together, which will happen years before the bike lanes are built.
Imagine calling yourself a journalist or news organization, then publishing a story about an SUV that can go 180 mph without ever mentioning that speeding and SUVs are both major causes of traffic deaths and injuries.
People mourn the planned transit lines their cities did not build long ago. Have you ever heard anyone mourn a planned freeway their city did not build?
This stream is incredible. Just watched the Council work together to try to get Chief Best to deescalate and move the police back and announce she wouldn’t use explosives or tear gas. Chief said no.
I started counting the cards in a deck last night, and got to 35 before it was time to go to bed. So there are 35 cards in the deck. But this morning, I woke up and continued counting and found that now there are 52. I agree with Justice Kavanaugh, this is very suspicious.
Lol. Just watched some jerk downtown stop behind a parked car in a parking lane near a red light. When the light turned green, he lost it and started honking and road raging at the parked car in front of him. Cars melt people’s brains.
This is horrendous and extremely insulting to these 62 people killed in a
@kirklandgov
crosswalk. It is legal to walk in a crosswalk. If your city’s crosswalks aren’t safe without people waving flags around, then fix your streets. Don’t blame the dead. Good lord.
We are set to absolutely demolish the October record for Fremont Bridge bike trips. The old record was 91,000. As of midnight, it was at 96,600 with two days left. Biking is absolutely booming in this town right now.

I’m in a great mood because I learned today that having an ownership stake in a “historic district” property gives me feudal lord levels of power over my renter subordinates who don’t know how to appreciate history like I do. If they cared about history, they’d buy a $1m house.
Fossil fuel interests are very afraid of a natural gas ban in Seattle. That’s a sign that we’re onto something good. Just got a push poll testing some very misleading anti-ban messaging:
If you poll half landlines, you’re basically answering the question: What do people who live in households that haven’t moved since the year 2005 think about this issue?
One of the most fascinating mysteries everyone discovers when they start biking is that there is no such thing as a tailwind. Sometimes you’re pedaling hard into a nasty headwind, and other times you’re just really strong. Happened to me going over & back on the 520 Bridge.
FACT: With Natural Gas you can feel the warmth. That's because unlike cooler air from an electric heat pump, a natural gas furnace delivers air that's as much as 25 degrees warmer.
The most poignant exhibit at the
@burkemuseum
: Car culture. An asteroid killed the dinosaurs, but their addiction to burning oil will kill the humans.
When bike elements are added to a road paving project, SDOT bills the bike budget. When car elements are added to a bike project, SDOT bills the bike budget. Hmm...
Protesters since day 1: Defund the police, invest in community and drop charges against protesters.
Mayor: Throw explosives at them and gas them. Do it again. Again. Again. Again. Again. Again. Again. OK stop. I love protesters now. Tell them to go away. Why wont they go away?
My kiddo has a theory for why the
@SoundTransit
@kcmetrobus
escalators stop working: A dinosaur keeps eating the parts. Might be a long shot, but worth investigating. Would be big if true.
