People that tell you that fanart is unprofessional and holds you back from getting jobs are, quite frankly, full of shit. Signed, a dude that never went to art school and has gotten art jobs for almost two decades with a portfolio that is 90% fanart.
I met multiple students yesterday who are STILL being told fanart is bad and should never be in their portfolio. Showing you can take an existing IP and add your unique perspective while still keeping it believably in fiction is very valuable. That’s what I do for my job.

They let me make a yugioh-ass episode of OK KO, no punches were pulled, this was definitely one of my all time favorite episodes to storyboard!!! I pulled so many memories straight out of my high school sketchbook!!!!.
