EXCLUSIVE: The son of former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth is thriving in Charlotte, 25 years after the shooting of Chancellor Lee Adams’ mother shocked America and sent Carruth to prison. My update on the murder, the miracle and Carruth (now a free man):

Two officials in Sunday's #SuperBowlLIX have strong connections to Charlotte. One has officiated the most games in NFL history. The other is the answer to "a low-end trivia question." Meet Boris Cheek (side judge) & Mike Morton (umpire), in @theobserver:

Everyone who’s been around UNC has memories of Dean, and I will just say this: he was kind to me when I was a student journalist for the DTH and knew very little about how the world worked. I called him at home to report stories a few times back then; he always took the call.

Sunday’s Super Bowl will have a definite Charlotte flavor with three former high school stars playing in the Big Game: Will Shipley, Jordan Davis (Eagles), DJ Humphries (Chiefs) Plus other players/coaches with NC ties

It wasn't a good night for players with deep North Carolina ties Thursday when the Pro Football Hall of Fame got announced in New Orleans: Luke Kuechly, Steve Smith and Torry Holt didn't make the final cut. Full story:

Among the top 15 modern-era finalists, Kuechly did make it to the final 7, which means he was close. Holt got top-7 too. Those 2 will automatically advance to the top-15 modern era finalist stage for the Class of 2026.

No Luke Kuechly or Steve Smith in the Class of 2025 for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. No Torry Holt, either, as the state of North Carolina doesn't fare well this year. Inductees were: Jared Allen, Eric Allen, Sterling Sharpe and Antonio Gates.

The Charlotte Hornets shipped off 23-year-old, 7-foot center in Mark Williams to the LA Lakers, getting back Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish and a future 1st-rounder. Was the deal worth it? Plus, my Hornets' promotional idea for Charlotte's next home game.
