@DrAnneCarpenter I used Sciwheel for this when I was a manuscript editor a few years ago after vetting a bunch of other options - it was great for this type of sharing. Looks like it's still running!

@sejkeown @sejkeown The process increases the power of the institution, the box where kids are sent, & makes their world dependent on adults for navigating. A child's world is their neighborhood. The box may be good for kids with a bad environment. For others it diminishes their lives.

@sejkeown I also wonder about the net effects on mental health. Fewer in-neighborhood interactions, less walking - more reliance on parents for play dates. On the other hand, more potential for support at bigger schools.

@isolderaftery Apparently Garfield's long-time resource officer prior to the pandemic was also well regarded, so I've heard.

@isolderaftery When you say 'nothing else seems to work.' Very few things have been tried and the obvious was not done - over years. SPS and the city, and adults at large in Seattle and WA, have let our kids down for a long time.

@isolderaftery Potentially a sensitive topic: there may also be changes in how SPS disciplines kids.

@isolderaftery Just two: 1. The SPS board eliminated school resource officers and I'm not sure what took their place. 2. Fewer cops. SPD has has repeatedly 'increased patrols' near Garfield, but this seemed transient instead of serious (not sure of details). There's more. Compare A to B.

@cshperspectives Ed Yong's feature in Nature on the legacy of Univ. of Washington ecologist Bob Paine shows this so well - and is one of the best stories about how science operates through generations.
