I am beyond excited to announce that I have accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Biochemistry at
@uclachem
starting in Fall 2022! The Schmitt Lab will be developing biosensors to study the regulation of metabolic events in single cells. 1/
I try not to bother my lab on the weekends (unless they message me first or it is urgent) so tomorrow, 9 am Slack is popping off (I learned how to schedule slack messages, and they're already on to me)
Good news: I got a K99! (with real data) Bad news: I declined because I won the award after I started my independent position, 6 months AFTER the study section met. But!!! next week I'm submitting the first Schmitt Lab grant, so 🤞hoping someone likes my ideas!
I am so excited & honored to receive the Director’s New Innovator Award (I have been really bad about keeping this a secret). I’m even more excited for my fellow recipients—their science is so cool!!
Early-stage investigators proposed innovative high-impact research ideas for the

#NIHHighRisk
I got a pretty good score on my first-ever NIH grant as a PI! Cautiously optimistic but just really proud of myself for doing well on the first grant I submitted for the lab. I'm going to treat myself to some new nail polish and flowers as a reward.
#NewPI
I’m very excited my new manuscript from
@jinzhanglab
is out on
@biorxivpreprint
! We developed a single-FP AMPK biosensor & I used it to determine mechanisms for spatiotemporal regulation of AMPK activity at various subcellular locations.
K99 went from ND, to a pretty good score on resubmission. Not sure if score is good enough to get funded, but proud of myself nonetheless! Thanks
@jinzhanglab
for the support and
@SD_IRACDA
for the grant writing courses!
Tbh the only reason I’m a “successful woman in STEM” is because I have a therapist, no partner, no kids, & help from my parents when I need it. I devote 100% of my time to my job. Stop telling women how to change & tell the academy how to change.
Survivor bias on Women in STEM panels leads to a bunch of useless "advice" about resilience and creating girls clubs (as if the model of the boys club isn't bad enough).
Why not ask some of the drips from the pipeline about "keeping women in STEM?" (Also what is "in"?)
Very excited my work on spatial AMPK activity is out! This paper really highlights how we can use biosensors. Many thanks to everyone who helped out with this project! Starting this fall
@schmittlab_ucla
will be figuring out what exactly AMPK is doing at all these locations.
💡Lighting Up AMPK💡🔬 We used a new AMPK biosensor to unravel mechanisms for AMPK activity at the lysosome, mitochondria, & nucleus. Out now in
@NatureComms
5 years ago today I interviewed with
@jinzhanglab
to join her lab as a postdoc…now I’m entering my last two weeks as a postdoc before becoming an asst professor! So excited (and stressed 🫠) to be joining
@uclachem
!!

I don’t think University of California employees talk enough about how horrible getting paid 1x/month on the first of the month is. It’s Jan 2nd and I cannot pay any bills or rent because my paycheck is still “pending”. 😡
Hello, I'm a chemist in a movie. I am distilling something very slowly through complex glassware which will soon explode after a single drop hits the receiver flask.
End of my third month as a
#NewPI
and end of my second month on campus. Grant number three has been submitted and I met in person with my first lab member. I think we'll be doing some experiments next!!!
So excited & honored to have received a Faculty Career Development Award from
@UCLA
Office of Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion. This award will help support ongoing undergrad-led efforts in the lab to image subcellular AMPK activity.
Congrats to Profs. Danielle Schmitt (Chem & Biochem) & Tara TeSlaa (Pharmacology) on receiving a CZI "Measuring Metabolism Across Scales" grant for their "Investigating the Organelle Specific Role of s-adenosylmethionine" project!

. I encourage everyone to learn about the Meyerhoff Program
@UMBC
. I was extremely fortunate to work with Meyerhoff scholars throughout my graduate career, and I hope other universities adopt this program.
10 weeks of metabolism!! This quarter has been A Lot (this class has been canceled, moved online, moved online 15 minutes into class, and canceled after 15 minutes due to a fire alarm) but I hope this batch of 153C students leave with a new appreciation of their humble liver.
@rgay
They keep emailing me, but none of these emails tell me how much my payments will cost and the FedLoan website is equally unhelpful. I will have a bill Feb 1, no idea the dollar amount.
I have a pretty terrible work-life balance. I usually only take significant time away from lab during the Christmas Holiday. My students want a good work-life balance, and I want to model that. So I took myself on vacation for a couple days
Coming up soon: UCLA Chem & Biochem is hiring!! We are looking for faculty across several disciplines including biochemistry! Official Job Ad to come soon, but if you have any questions about the department, let me know.
I had a really lovely time at
#cellbio2023
. I got to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, and learn about very cool science. Looking forward to next year!
I've had a fantastic couple of days with
@tarateslaa
at CZI. Thank you so much
@cziscience
for supporting two new assistant professors & our collaborative project to measure & manipulate SAM! I’m so glad to be a part of this community

13th funding application (internal and external, LOI and full application) has been submitted. This one was a very last minute decision to apply, so honestly, just proud of myself for getting it out the door.

@chrstn_e
Yes. "To accomplish this work, we will leverage our expertise in methods for studying compartmentalized metabolism and cellular signaling using fluorescence microscopy along with our collaborator’s expertise..." with all of my papers cited. This statement is in every grant.
🔬 Out now in
@Curr_Protocols
, I present a protocol for imaging subcellular AMPK activity using ExRai AMPKAR with both epi and confocal microscopy. I'm excited to see how others use ExRai AMPKAR!
I was asked how long I’ve been at UCLA, and I realized it’s been two years, today! I have learned and grown so much as a person, a scientist, & a mentor over the last two years. I have a lot to say about being
#NewPI
, but today I am thankful
Ok I know a lot of

followers have stickers with their lab logos…send me your stickers! My fridge is in the “waiting room” for my office and I would love to decorate with logos from other labs!
Multi-lab celebration with
@tarateslaa
today! We are so excited for our collaborative work supported by
@cziscience
to use genetically encoded organelle-targeted tools to manipulate and measure metabolism across scales.
I think it was
@CterminiPhD
who shared some of her "stock" email responses--game changer. I have drafted email responses for some of the most common emails I get (particularly scheduling meetings) and this is a great starting point for getting emails answered.

1. PCR doesn’t detect proteins. 2. If the PCR primers are specific, lysis was good, and you have covid, it will be positive. 3. You tried to re-invent neuroscience, it was lame 4. You don’t think all of medicine isn’t trying to find better tests?!?!
My lab has ~20 people, so all group meetings will be conducted via Zoom. But as another postdoc pointed out today, is our open-plan "collaboratory" not a large gathering of people? There's easily 100 people in this shared lab space.

🍾 Congrats to ALL SIX Schmitt Lab undergraduate students who were selected for either commencement awards or SURFs! We are so proud of all of them and their accomplishments!!
Crossed another grant off the list! Now to write a midterm, fill out a form for another grant, help my students collect data, meet with undergraduate, read a fellowship application….

I won an award! Thank you so much
@SD_IRACDA
for voting me as “Most Supportive”!! I try my best to be supportive and provide resources I can to my peers and mentees; this recognition means a lot!!
Today, The Schmitt Lab welcomed our first lab member, Alexia! Alexia is a biochemistry undergraduate who will be helping set the lab up and then working on imaging the spatial regulation of AMPK activity. Welcome, Alexia!
Fifth year of my postdoc (!!!) not off to the start I wanted (😡 pandemic) but it’s my work anniversary in the
