@frightfulHoblin Right, I definitely don't take this worry to be *anything* like a decisive consideration here. But I do think responding with "what a nice problem that would be to have" undersells the risk that this sort of thing might undermine the contributions of DEI even in the present?

A basic research skill is identifying questions that should be answered in the existing literature but are not… Could that make LLM hallucinations useful as indicators that the existing literature “should” answer a question but doesn’t? Has anyone tried to operationalize this?

@ericesheng Yes, although in a Kantian context, I would push back a bit on the association between the a priori and the innate in your previous post, which seems to me a questionable there.

@ericesheng Agreed, one thing to like about a initial focus on Bacon is that it makes debates about innatism less central

@ericesheng I do think reducing these categories to a rhetorical stance misses something important here

@ericesheng I don’t have a real disagreement on either of these points, my real concerns are more meta-historical - eg if we give up on the idea of a single universal narrative and concede the point about actors categories, what might remain? I’m tempted to say, more than one might think?

@ericesheng Yes, remarkably almost no philosopher in history has failed to occupy a middle way between two extreme alternatives. Makes you wonder what they’re all disagreeing about
