Today sex workers in NT & Australia celebrate the passing of the Sex Industry Bill 2019 in NT Parliament. This bill fully decriminalises sex work providing sex workers with access to the same workplace health & safety protections as other Territorians.
We've been alerted to this project by a right-wing journalist making a documentary about SW. We warn our NSW sex worker followers against involvement and encourage anyone approached by Lauren Southern to simply refer her to us or to the NSW sex worker peer organisation
@SWOPnsw
We're very happy to announce that the Northern Territory has this week become the first place in the world to explicitly protect sex workers from discrimination by naming 'sex work' and 'sex worker' as protected attributes! 🎉
Congratulations Victorian SW - we're on the way! There's still a lot of work to do from here, but this announcement from the Andrews government is a very important step:

and Scarlet Alliance response at
INTERNATIONAL WHORES' DAY: On 2nd June 1975, more than 100 sex workers and their allies began an 8-day demonstration at the St Nizier Church in Lyon, France to protest criminalised and exploitative working and living conditions.
Today Is International Sex Workers' Rights Day. Started in 2001, when over 25,000 sex workers gathered in India for a festival despite efforts from prohibitionist groups. Sex worker groups across the world have subsequently celebrated the date annually on the 3rd of March.
BREAKING NEWS!
@VictorianLabor
commits to destroying the sex work registration records by May 10th, 2022. We and
@VixenCollective
will stay on it to ensure this happens! And hold
#sexworker
celebration party when it does! 🍾🎉💃🏻🕺💃🏻
Did you catch us last night on SBS? Thanks to all of the
#sexworkers
who marched with us in all of your finery! We’re on a
#whorepride
high today. Thanks also to No Pride in Detention and Homos Against Scomo for having us along in their float!

Today, Sunday 17th December is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Sex workers and allies observe this day annually to recognise and remember sex worker victims and survivors of violence globally.
It's International Sex Worker Rights Day! We know that for our peers and fellow sex worker orgs, that's every day, but today we celebrate and remember the historical 2001 gathering of 25,000 sex workers in Kolkata. Strength and solidarity to our movement across the world!

Thankyou to all who worked so hard to put our float together and to all who came to show their support!
It's a good news day! Thanks to the advocacy of Scarlet Alliance and our member organsations, sex work businesses, including brothels and strip clubs, are NO LONGER longer required to remain closed in stage 3 in the Federal roadmap!
Today we say goodbye to our CEO since 2016, Jules Kim.
A brave and outspoken voice for sex worker rights, she has fearlessly led us through the pandemic and been part of countless campaigns to achieve decriminalisation and anti-discrimination protections across Australia.
Scarlet Alliance and
@SWOPnsw
invite our sex worker community and friends to pay our individual and collective respects to Michaela Dunn tonight. We will be laying flowers and holding vigil space for the loss of a beloved woman, friend and colleague.

many of the issues being faced by workers in this (so-called "new" or "emerging") "

have been collectively organising around & talking about for decades (while finding ways to negotiate/resist/protest/collectively bargain & survive)
🎯 NT has decriminalised sex work
🚀 VIC announced an Inquiry
🔥 SA is only a matter of time
⚡️ACT amended its laws in 2018
💥 QLD last month announced a Law Reform Commission Inquiry
Could it be that policy is finally catching up with the insurmountable evidence on decrim?
Okay ladies now let's get in formation! 🙌 Help us block the harmful Bill that would criminalise sex work before South Australian Parliament by signing our petition now:
A Bill that would fully decriminalise sex work is currently being considered by the South African Parliament.
If passed it would make it only the third country in the world to decriminalise sex work (which makes this kind of a big deal!). 🧵
Lots of
#sexworkers
are mums/parents. The media trope of sex workers not being good parents or children who are traumatised because one of their parents was a
#sexworker
is re-played over & over each day in mainstream media.
The
#stigma
&stereotype is pervasive yet far from true.
New Zealand sex workers have just been included in their stage 2 return to work. In Australia Saunas and bath houses are permitted to open in stage 3, but sex industry premises are not. This is not about public health, this is outright discrimination.
🚨 Somebody sound the SWERF siren 🚨 because a Bill has just been introduced to the South Australian parliament that would criminalise clients of sex workers with cash fines and imprisonment as penalty for paying for sex.
Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Sex Workers. We remember the sex workers who we have lost to violence. We commemorate their lives and vow to keep fighting for equality.
There is still so much work to do in Australia to make that a reality.
Nordic model bill (that criminalises sex worker clients, landlords, dependents and partners) has been introduced by South Australian Upper House Liberal leader Nicola Centofanti. South Australia out of step with the rest of Australia and the evidence!
We're saddened to learn that Dr Jana, founder of Kolkata sex worker organisation
@Durbar11
has lost his battle with COVID-19. You can learn more about the important history and work of Durbar through their website,
Sex workers have been repeatedly betrayed
by the media, by “feminist” orgs, by governments & policymakers, by researchers & by health workers
Our experiences have been used against us, cherry picked and decontextualised by ppl who insist on claiming they are helping us
#IDEVASW
We congratulate
@VixenCollective
and Victorian sex workers on the passage of the Sex Work Decriminalisation Bill in the lower house. Still more to do to improve the bill in the upper house, but this is a key step in the process to getting the laws sex workers want and deserve!
By explicitly naming the attributes the Bill that just passed NT Parliament recognises the unique stigma we experience as sex workers in our chosen line of work and clearly demonstrates that we are valued members of the community, deserving of rights and protection.
We are briefly reopening the Scarlet Alliance Emergency Relief Fund to Victorian SWs only. We will keep it open as long as COVID-19 restrictions impact Victorian SWs. To receive funds next week, get your application in by 12pm Tuesday 1 June.
Sex work is not the only kind of work people have historically and/or currently tried to argue should not be paid work.
This has never stopped workers from organising and demanding fair work conditions, safety, respect and pay in other industries.
It won't stop sex workers either
Happy Sex Worker Pride to all wh0rez and our allies. Scarlet Alliance is a proud peer organisation and we are celebrating the past and future achievements of the seks worker rights movement today ❤️
Sexworkers have stated for years that the

Research has now documented the impacts.
Anyone calling for these laws must now admit they do so knowing the impact on sex workers.
Congratulations to all of the sex workers, activists and community members who have fought to win this campaign. This is a momentous day for all of us and wouldn't be possible without your tireless work over many, many years.
SHAME on
@ABCaustralia

for publishing such an inaccurate, incredibly unbalanced, and detrimental piece of media about Victorian sex workers, at a time when we are already under so much strain. We and

await contact from you to undo this damage.

Sex workers around the world call on governments to remove the conditions that engender violence against sex workers, including criminalization of sex work.
Sending love to sex workers everywhere, today and every day and honouring those who are no longer with us.

Joint statement from
@scarletalliance

@VixenCollective
"Time and time again sex workers become the quick, easy and disposable targets for blame. The ‘vectors of disease’ is an old, tired cliche pulled out too often and too conveniently."
What is something that you have learned from a sex worker?
(We are addressing this to everyone, whether you have done sex work yourself or not, and it could be from a co-worker, form a sex worker activist, from your friend or family member who is a sex worker or as a client!)
The Decriminalising Sex Work Bill was voted in by the Queensland Government on 2nd May 2024 🎉 A heartfelt thank you to the many sex workers, allies and supporters who have gotten behind the DecrimQLD campaign to remove harmful laws and achieve decriminalisation in Queensland!
[cw: death] It is with deep sadness that we let you know that Bella Green, a sex worker, comedian, author, and cherished friend passed away last week.
We extend our condolences to those who knew and cared for her, and all of our community who are impacted by this awful news.
@AUSTRAC
@AUSTRAC
This is appalling. It encourages financial discrimination and surveillance of sex workers. It also has no evidence base, is incredibly stigmatising, and plays into a number of trafficking myths used to marginalise and criminalise sex workers.
"The fact that sex work is work does not mean that it is good work, or empowering work, or harmless work. However, sex work is not inherently harmful, but criminalization and stigma do make sex work circumstantially harmful."
Invasion Day is not a day for celebration.
It is a day of mourning for Indigenous people. A day that marks the beginning of their land being invaded and of over 200yrs of colonisation and genocide by white settlers.
That many celebrate today is nothing short of disgraceful.
MEDIA RELEASE: NT introduces Decrim Bill today! “All Territorians deserve to be safe at work, including sex workers. Being a sex worker is a recognised profession in the NT. We applaud Govt for recognising every Territorian's workplace rights." Jules Kim
When sex workers say sex work is work ...its coz that's our experience and its coz these terms make sense to us.
To claim that "prostitution is not a job" means denying the experience and knowledge of sex workers- as if we don't know what we are doing

We’re proud to announce Janelle Fawkes as our Scarlet Alliance Whore of the Year.
Janelle is a life-long activist, sex worker, former CEO of Scarlet Alliance and all around legend who is currently leading the campaign to decriminalise sex work in Queensland.
One sex worker - Jane-spoke about the protest being “a great opportunity to educate (

Today is pioneering sex worker, activist, artist, author and performer Carol Leigh's birthday (1951-2022).
A fearless whore and powerful force to be reckoned with, she was instrumental in paving the way for the many wins our movement has fought to secure in recent decades.
South Australian sex workers worked tirelessly to change laws to support sex worker work health & safety. Members of the lower house ignored the evidence and voted down the Decriminalisation Bill (19 for -24 against). A shameful day for SA parliament. It’s not over.
#SANF19
"The data clearly shows that criminalizing consensual adult s--ual services causes severe harms, which fall mainly on the most marginalized groups—women, POC, transgender & NB workers, workers' with disabilities, & economically marginalized workers"
Restrictions remain for sex workers in Victoria and sex workers have been targeted for fines and penalties. The police are not health care professionals and fines are not health care solutions. Please help us provide a safety net for our community.
@AUSTRAC
We are the national peak body for sex workers and sex worker organisations in Australia. We sit on the national trafficking roundtable & have been representing sex workers on this for decades. We were not contacted or consulted at any point in the production of this document.
Important notice, pls RT
Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association, has become aware of a Victorian business using a name that attempts to link or confound their commercial association and our not-for-profit peer organisation. There is no affiliation. Statement in pic:

When people argue that some sex workers are also survivors of child sexual abuse...& that this somehow means sex work is not a real decision (?)
do they think survivors of abuse are incapable of any decision making?
Or only if the decision is to do work that others disapprove of
Today we pay our respects to Carol Leigh (1951 - 2022). A brave, bold and pioneering sex worker, activist, artist, author and performer whose contributions to our movement we will forever be indebted to. (1/3)
It is with great sadness that we inform our community of the passing of our beloved sister girl Laura Ignatius Orsto "Holden". We will be paying tribute to Laura and her life in Darwin, Sydney and on the Tiwi Islands.
