Living at the intersection of policy, research, & practice in wildfire mitigation. Former mayor of Mill Valley. Opinions my own & not reflective of my employer.
@MonicaGandhi9
Policy needs to catch up to the research. Those with natural immunity should not be locked out of participating in major life activities.
Once when visiting a friend whose kids are grown, I saw she had a pen cup in which there were probably 8 pairs of scissors. It's times like this, as I cut open packages with a knife, that I remember that moment of pure hope, that one day all my scissors will be returned to me.

YES. And then look at getting rid of occupational licensing that prevents the poor from starting small businesses without govt permission.
“I’m not someone who shies away from difficult issues or who just shies away from standing up on principle, even at a personal cost,” said McEntee, a Libertarian of Sri Lankan heritage.

Another issue is kids not getting services because they are "not underperforming." This is not what IDEA says, and kids should not be denied needed services until they reach a crisis point.
@EPoe187
Disagree with the second half. The belief is that human nature needs help and guardrails in the form of government regulation and wealth redistribution in order to be good.
It's the little things that keep you going. I believe this makes 5 local government agencies I've had a hand in dissolving in my tenure in public office.
@EPoe187
The lesson for me was that persuasion requires a relationship. One interaction is never going to cut it.
Also, words are not the answer. It is never just an "information problem."
@KevinKileyCA
I wrote a paper on this for my homeland security master's program in 2020. Local govts were shocked that our usual responsibilities were overtopped by the public health officer, who was accountable to no local authority. This was enshrined in state law well before the pandemic.
@nathanwpyle
And if you start playing it but stop within the first 5 mins bc you realize the timing is not working out, you should get to restart the clock.

"In contrast, several studies on respiratory viruses have shown the presence of robust virus-specific CD8-T cell responses which have been shown to last for decades."(2/x)
@NAChristakis
This is by design. The whole premise is that different rules should apply to different people in fairness to past injustices and inequalities. Who qualifies for these special rules depends on whom you ask.
“If anyone can refute me—show me I’m making a mistake or looking at things from the wrong perspective—I’ll gladly change. It’s the truth I’m after, and the truth never harmed anyone.” – Marcus Aurelius

"if a space is large enough with proper ventilation, the amount of time spent in those spaces is such that 'those spaces can be safely operated even at full capacity & the scientific support for reduced capacity in those spaces is really not very good.'"

"Most current vaccination strategies employ the generation of broadly neutralizing antibodies, however, the mucosal antibody response to many respiratory viruses is short-lived and declines with age." (1/x)
After a late ending to last night's council meeting, I found this framed resolution from our legislators waiting for me, in appreciation for my service as mayor and Councilmember. Thank you,
@ilike_mike
and
@MarcLevine
, for the recognition and care. It means a lot to me.

Memory B cells are fascinating.
"In one amazing study (published in 2008), researchers isolated memory B cells against the 1918 flu strain from the blood of 32 individuals aged 91-101 years. These people had been born on or before 1915 and had survived that pandemic."
I am excited to have been voted as President of the Marin County Council of Mayors and Councilmembers and that I get to work alongside San Anselmo Mayor Brian Colbert as Vice President!

Also true for the employer who has to pay for rent, utilities, supplies, inventory, HR, insurance, payroll taxes, business licenses, etc. There is generally not room to pay for an unproductive employee at the expense of the productive ones and the customers.
@visakanv
This happens to me ALL the time. It shows that ideas circulate, and the key is being able to develop and execute on them. That has been my personal struggle - building that habit.
Can we please bring back travel agents? I would absolutely pay an annual fee or even a significant per transaction fee for someone with experience with the airline systems and who is even slightly nice to me.

Checks out! And such interesting prime factorization! 273 breaks down into 3×7×13. Also interesting that (37)(273) is a palindrome.

@RepMikeGarcia
In a session where legislators are severely limited in the number of bills they can put forward, this is a higher priority than, say, COVID, wildfire prevention, education, housing...?
@dockaurG
Those of us who are not as familiar with how the body's immune response system works may grab onto antibodies as the proof of immunity, but they are only a short-lived proxy. I hope science reporters will translate this kind of research for lay people so we can understand.
@RussellLowery10
Some elements of a sin tax, while being a convenient vehicle that is not obvious to the end user. Disproportionate burden on the working class, and that part is only going to get worse.
Totally surprised to get my first stripe today at Gracie Barra Santa Rosa! I'm generally one of the oldest and certainly the smallest people in there on a given day. The culture is so welcoming, yet with a high standard of performance, thanks to Professors Natalie and Conor!
First attempt at the

reverse omelette. It's hard to tell, but that golden tone is perfectly crisp and browned Midnight Moon Gouda on the outside, with spinach inside.
How long until we have a system of taxation where you can individually choose what you want your tax dollars to support, or to just opt for the same designation as your legislator or even a celebrity? The tech is there right now.
@RepDanCrenshaw
"nuclear power releases less radiation into the environment than any other major energy source. This statement will seem paradoxical to many readers, since it’s not commonly known that non-nuclear energy sources release any radiation into the environment. They do."

@chuckwoolery
But to say that unvax "create" variants makes no sense. If the vax prevented all transmission, and if 100% were vax there would be 0 virus, you would still have the transmission in animals, so variants would still be created by the nature of virus replication.
@paulg
This is based on an assumption that the federal government should be the driver. The states are the ones that should be driving, so that part is a success and not a failure. This is a demonstration that the powers of the fed govt are and should be limited per the constitution.
I just asked the kids, "Does anyone else want a piece of chocolate?" When neither one did, I found myself saying, "Seeing none, I will close the public hearing." Might have attended a few too many public meetings last week. 😋

"A similar path was recently embraced in Marin County, California. If public health officials tie policies to hospitalizations, not cases, the media’s obsession with case counting will likely abate and help refocus attention on serious illness alone, as spelled out here."
@lizziejohnsonnn
This is why we need more focus on prevention and preparedness. 100 years of fuels are built up. Everyone in high fire hazard areas needs to know multiple ways to evacuate, to have a go-bag for each family member inc pets, and to know their neighbors so we can help each other.
