Theatre Twitter. I won't be popular for this but I have to tell the truth. Maybe no audience member has contracted Covid but I know of a director, a designer, a sound designer, a stage manager all of whom caught it in a rehearsal room.
Feeling more tired - physically and emotionally - than I ever have before. I'm 56 later this month ... oh, and I'm disillusioned & frustrated & angry. I'll probably take this down later but curious what will happen if I send it out into the world.

. Thank you for your well-intentioned comments about the crisis facing the arts but once again hearing about the West End, ballet, opera and the big theatres makes those of us working in small-scale theatre

I’m 56, been working in theatre for 30+ years & today I proudly fit up a show for babies. I don’t want to “climb the greasy pole to get to run a major theatre” (with no disrespect to those who do!) - this, for me, is “what it means to be an artist and what creativity looks like”
Why do we assume that a show made for an adult audience is more important than theatre made for or with young people?, asks
@lyngardner
. Those who devalue children's theatre are cultural snobs who need to grow up
Masks, shields, social-distance, copious amounts of sanitiser and disinfectant, and it's still possible to catch it. I understand the frustration at the anomalies about what is allowed and what isn't but please stop claiming that theatre is 100% safe!
We got married 25 years ago today. Love, laughter, joy, tears, illness, death, travel, creativity, conversation in those years and many ups and downs. Who knows what the future holds but we’re still together, still holding hands ❤️❤️
And please stop posting photos of yourselves in rehearsal rooms without masks and at close quarters - unless you've all been in a bubble and/or quarantined prior to beginning work.
Dear theatre people. A friend on Facebook asked why theatre people are thinking of giving up. If you have decided to give up, have thought of giving up but changed your mind, are considering giving up, what are your reasons?
Wow. Very honoured to be on this list - and very grateful to British Council Wales for support to work with wonderful artists (and make brilliant friends) in India and South Africa. 📸

I used to pass out, look as if bucket of water had been thrown over me as I was sweating so much, writhe in agony on the floor - not every period but many. Was it connected with massive fibroids that went undiagnosed for so long & meant I was never able to conceive? Possibly!
Oh theatre people. Can we be aware that much as we love theatre it isn’t the only thing in the world. Sometimes life, death, illness or simply the need to have quiet times can take precedence, so please don’t get upset if seeing theatre isn’t at the top of someone’s agenda! ♥️
Just be kind. Believe that people are trying to do their best. Remember they are probably making mistakes because they are doing things for the first time or in a new way. Be aware that there is still a great deal of trauma & anxiety. Just be kind!
I’m 58. Perceived as being pretty darn successful in my field of work in the arts, have contributed a fair amount to children, families & teachers through that work and I’ve never earned anywhere near £40k per annum. This figure is ludicrous!
Sunak/ Braverman deal reportedly includes plan to:
- increase minimum salary for skilled worker arriving from £26k to £40k
- ending extended visas for graduates
- further limiting family members people can bring
- prioritising certain universities for student visas.
Musing today on the fact that those who choose to produce the arts or become arts bureaucrats or funders earn SO much more than artists (or “creative practitioners”. Why? Is it understandable? Or fair? Was it ever thus? Should it be like this? Thoughts?
Argh!!!! A staycation is when you stay at home and maybe have trips out/days out. When you stay in a hotel or a cottage or a B&B it's a holiday. In the UK. I know there are more important things to get annoyed about but this is driving me mad!!

The destination of the train I’m on is Windsor. My teenage mother & I spent several months there in a Home for Unmarried Mothers before I was born (breech) in the hospital in Old Windsor (the former poorhouse!) All sorts of feelings being stirred up

Sometimes the desire for a cuddle from my mum (died in 1998) or dad (died in 2011) or preferably both is quite overwhelming. Grief never leaves us completely. Love to everyone who is missing a parent today xx
Our first audience of babies giggled, waved hands, bounced, played, went silent and focused and danced. A delight! And thank you so much to everyone in the building for your hard work & warmth in welcoming audiences back! X

My dad was treated so brilliantly for throat cancer at the Beatson, my mum had decades of treatment and dialysis for renal failure and Parkinson’s at Stobhill and the Western. Stobhill saved my life when my appendix ruptured when I was 17. Scottish NHS care has been phenomenal

Right ... the new me is stopping work at 16.51 on a Friday, taking the weekend off, and an extra day on Monday as it's our 24th wedding anniversary. Will I manage not to check on emails and/or respond to them over the weekend? We'll see. I'm certainly going to try!
I wish I could phone my dad and tell him I'm quoted in an article in The Guardian alongside Peter Brook. He would have been excited and proud. I miss him ❤️
Who was that total blubbering mess in the balcony of St David’s Hall after Nick Cave thanked us for working out what it means to be an audience now and then sang Into My Arms? An evening of sublime music. Thank you!

Oh yes. Here's to the nodders of which I am one! The screen full of impassive faces, the muted sound that doesn't allow even a murmur of agreement to be heard makes presenting, talking, facilitating on Zoom so unnerving. Thank you, nodders!
I've now skim-read and it's a sobering read for ALL freelancers. As a 58 year old woman who mainly works as a director it certainly chimes with my experience. "21-30 years experience - females’ mean earnings are £22,600 compared to men’s mean of £43,200 - a 47.7% pay gap."
Released TODAY. The Big Freelancer Survey Report 2023, 'Underpaid, Undervalued, Under Pressure' highlighting a 37% gender pay gap between male and female theatre freelancers and an industry "rife with ageism and sexism"

8 years ago today my wonderful dad slipped away after living with Alzheimer's for 7 years. His legacy teaching so many actors about acting and masks and improvisation was immense - as was his legacy as a dad & grandad. Love you & miss you still!
Talking to students today about writing, devising & directing Theatre for Young Audiences allowed me to recollect wonderful creative times with brilliant creative people & made me very happy! 😊
Oh dear. Fatigue and lockdown - can't remember words, names, what I'm supposed to be doing, what I came upstairs for, what I went downstairs for. Who am I? What am I for?

We're so happy to be making a theatre show for babies with the wonderful Sarah Argent and Kevin Lewis. We've all really missed live performance and to begin with a show for babies, many of whom will have been born in lockdown, is extra special.

Just had an image of myself walking between lines in a crowded London Underground station and it terrified me - not catching the virus, simply so unused to being in a crowd. Anyone else nervous of the return to the old ways?

To all of the potential babies - the follicles, the embryos - so sorry that none of you decided to develop & implant & stay. You would have been very much loved.
