A bit of personal news… I’m the new Senior Producer of Religion & Spirituality at
@npr
!! Can’t wait for lots of collaborations with brilliant colleagues in and out of NPR!
At a time when so much religion reporting has disappeared, it’s inspiring to hear that NPR is expanding its coverage of religion and spirituality with 2 new hires! Welcome
@burkedaniel13
and
@sarazonah
It's my first official week as the new Senior Producer of Religion and Spirituality at NPR, and I'm working on compiling some resources for reporters. What are your favorite pieces of religion journalism from the last 10 years or so? (Especially audio!)
For folks who are connected to a religion or faith but are not necessarily observant -- how do you respond when someone asks you if you're religious? And what kind of code switching do you find yourself having to do on the regular?
While you’re at
#RNA2024
, don’t forget to support your fellow journalists who are collectively working to demand better conditions. You can pick up a pamphlet with info on how to support our striking colleagues at the

Belatedly read
@skestenbaum
’s cover story in Harper’s, there is so much THERE there! I was struck in particular by this passage that I’m still trying to tease out, particularly in the context of a number conversations I’ve been fortunate to have with Sam over the years. 1/
Brilliant, well-thought, beautifully civil discourse on the
#RNA2024
panel on how to cover the Israel-Hamas war. Well done, you all! (And thank you for all your efforts coordinating
@interfaithish
and
@PG_PeterSmith
!)
So thrilled about the food panel organized by
@reporterdeepa
,
@NarangNimarta
, &
@HollyAMeyer
. A beautiful discussion & act of breaking bread. They even let me help serve chai & samosas from the local gurdwara. It feels good to watch ppl eat together during this moment.
#RNA2024
This will be especially helpful for reporters who are newer to the beat and who may not necessarily have thought about certain stories as religion stories, even if it's baked in. But as my colleague Liz Kineke says...religion is always in the room!
Second panel of the day…how to cover religious scandals, with an impressive slate of investigative journalists. (Plus I’ll take any excuse to listen to/debate with
@skestenbaum
!)

Fascinating conversation about caste and the way we understand it and cover caste discrimination in the US at
#RNA2024
. So glad
@reporterdeepa
and
@sonipaul
organized this, and didn’t shy away from a difficult conversation!
(And yes - this includes stories about non-belief, spiritual but not religious folks, and the ways in which we frame our understanding of the world even if that doesn't include a deity!)
Looking particularly for things that stuck with you, made you think differently about a topic, challenged your assumptions, or brought you a new or unexpected perspective. Newsy stuff is also great if it does this!
On a busy news day, it's more important than ever that your workers have their needs met and are compensated fairly. The journalism industry is an abysmal place right now, and the only way it gets better is if we work together to collectively create & demand better.

We took a beautiful & thoughtful trip to the Tree of Life synagogue & PGH JCC to talk about how to memorialize & move forward in the years to follow. It was organized by community leaders in PGH, including
@ShannonStraw
,
@keegangibson
, &
@PG_PeterSmith
. Ty all so much.

It’s so disheartening how many people (of different faiths) at
#RNA2024
have mentioned that journalists are still not building relationships w/ religious communities outside of calling them after a terrorist attack or something similarly horrible.
We’ve gotta work on this y’all
@ReligionReport
@skestenbaum
If you haven’t already, give it a read.
@skestenbaum
is an amazing reporter and a beautiful writer. (And this one comes with gorgeous photos by another friend of mine, Victor Blue.) Here’s to more meaningful and messy conversations! /end
"The term 'mainstream media' is now used almost as an epithet." -- Niraj Warikoo, on distrust of the media, particularly in religious communities
#RNA2024
At
#RNA2024
@Rowaida_Abdel
says that while Muslims in America don’t have a majority ethnicity, we almost always equate Muslims and Arabs, and thereby flatten the stories of non-Arab Muslims and non-Muslim Arabs.
Really fascinating article from Peggy Fletcher Stack. I know some of this work has been done on other faiths too...curious if anyone knows if it's aggregated anywhere, or if there's comparative data?
At the panel discussing the tragedy at Tree of Life, we are reminded that in Judaism, the mourner’s kaddish (the prayer said to memorialize someone) does not mention death, but does reference life.

@skestenbaum
& I don’t always see eye to eye on approaches. But I’m grateful that we take each other’s work seriously enough that we can really engage in the messiness of it all. His piece has given me lots to think about (much of which isn’t even mentioned in this thread). 12/
@RadioKitty
I've definitely heard others express similar ideas to this, though I haven't met many that grew up with Catholic Social Teaching. Thank you so much for this, Kitty!
First panel of the day at
#RNA2024
is "Covering the Impact of the Israel-Hamas War in Your Community." So grateful that our membership is willing to have tough conversations. Especially when it means figuring out how to do better coverage.
@adammichaelwood
@cthocas
Not sure if you're referring to anything specific, but I can tell you I fact check all my stories, and that it's important to us to speak to people of faith for our stories. Not every fact check requires a "seminary-trained expert," but...
So grateful to be at
#RNA2024
, though this is the first year in several that I wasn't in Waco for the memorial on the anniversary of the end of the Waco siege. Lots to think about at this conference. Thinking of the Branch Davidian community today as well.
@adammichaelwood
@cthocas
...I can tell you that our correspondent went to Div school, our editor has built sources in many different communities of faith, and I sometimes embed in faith-based communities for projects. So...we out here.
Please read this incredibly important and well reported story from
@judejoffeblock
. And while you’re doing it, keep in mind this thread about the people who tried to go after her because she dared to do such reporting.

This will be an expansion of NPR’s coverage of religion in lots of ways. You should expect more stories, features, reporting from across the country, thoughtful conversations, and a deeper understanding of the way religion affects every part of public life.
On the
#RNA2024
panel on Muslim frustrations around Islamophobia, Christine Mohamed from
@CAIR_PITTSBURGH
said she regularly invites journalists to iftars, community events, etc and they don’t engage. The only time they reach out is when something tragic happens.
Niraj Warikoo reminds us that source reporting during non-crisis moments is critical. I cannot up this enough. *Especially* on the religion beat.
