I heard Josepha Madigan on the radio this morning saying the Gardai are doing their best. For the record: I do not consider 3000 unanswered 999 calls relating to intimate partner violence to be 'doing their best.
On Tuesday, I was driving to Ennis from Miltown Malbay listening to news about Inch, I passed three men on the road, slightly distressed looking and realised they must be from the Mogowna House so I stopped.
We've always had a 2 tier migration system in Ireland but watching what's happening now with one group of people being granted everything necessary for them to get on their feet while other groups face state-enforced barriers to prevent them doing so is really disturbing.
🧵
Over the years I've lived in Clare (7years) there have been Syrian refugees resettled in four towns, Somalians in one, two new DP centres opened, one emergency centre opened, and more than 3500 Ukrainians welcomed into the community. While it hasn't all been easy
And throw them to the migrants on the train roofs, every day. They understand the journey, the loneliness of migration and importance of a gesture and a kind word. With our history of migration we should all understand this too.
I find it really hard to have any sympathy or understanding for the Irish people who stood at a blockade and let these men walk past them, not knowing where they were going, in a strange place and didn't have the humanity to even offer them a lift or directions.
We can all have 'community concerns' but when we lose our decency, our solidarity and perspective, then we are all in trouble. Years ago I was in Mexico in villages where trains pass every day with migrants on them the locals come out with bags of food water and clean underwear
If every refugee left Ireland and no more came, we'd still have every issue we now have from health to housing to rural decline, we'd eventually have a greater lack of medical & care professionals. Having no services is the result of running the state as a casino for capitalists.
This is a complete lie. We have been warning, reporting, predicting and loads of people working all over the country to try to prevent this happening. The state, media, senior Gardai and politicians have ignored or facilitated it.
Asked if Gardaí failed the country, Mr Harris said you could not have anticipated that this would have been the response to a violent crime.
He said nobody could have anticipated the disorder when these awful events would have occurred | Read more:
I absolutely love eating out, it's my hobby from the caf, to the buffet to the restaurant, but honestly if you asked me how many people's death I would accept to be able to do so a few weeks early the answer is zero, none, not one.
1/3 What's happening in east wall is disgraceful, it's a community being manipulated into blaming people who are at the bottom of the heap for problems caused by those sitting happily at the top of the heap counting their profits.
For the young ones, Michael McDowell as minister for justice led a campaign to remove citizenship from children born in Ireland to foreign parents. He used every scare tactic going then in his 'I'm so reasonable and barristery' way but it was a low point for Ireland.
Hard to believe what this country has become. The Government has a lot to answer for.
These children don't deserve to face this today. Shameful day in Roscrea.
#RefugeeCrisis
Dept of Justice may have caused more Covid-19 outbreaks than the kids everyone's giving out about - 4 DP centres now with clusters plus 2 workplaces where DP residents are working. This was inevitable when DOJ ruled out single rooms and decided 3 strangers to a bedroom was grand
Von Der Leyen needs to be reined in. Who and what is she representing? Countries in Europe and the EU have independent foreign policies she has zero mandate to represent us in this conflict.
They should all resign. However they should be resigning over direct provision, treatment of the Traveller community, refusal to build social housing and failure to accept climate change as a reality. Instead we'll have to make them resign over their own petty entitlement.
I never understood how our library system survived austerity and our privatise-all-the-things ideology but they did. Libraries are a miracle - public comfy, quiet, calm spaces where a person can learn, read, study, work or take their kids, and we are letting fascists close them.
And he looked through his binoculars and said, they're fine, they look like they are laughing and sure enough, they were. Please don't let the fear mongers take the story over.
As we approach tomorrow's hearings, this is how states have thus far reacted to South Africa's ICJ application. I expect more reactions to come as of tomorrow, though, so I will continue to update this as events progress.
So we were in Inch this evening, met the men in the centre, who are doing okay, very nice very young mostly and the community are still blockading the roads there although a bit more quietly. It's a really poor show from the community in Inch which I think they'll regret.
A super friend of ours who wouldn't want his name on here got in his car drove out and picked them up, (two other people had also immediately offered) they had a chat in the car and following that decided to go back - much cheered up because of meeting one friendly face.
Traveller rights are human rights. Anyone who voted for a man with no platform & no ideas cause he said something incendiary about Travellers & got the media excited should be ashamed of yourselves. He'd come for your community too if it served him.
I'm still so disturbed by how differently the Govt is treating Ukrainians and other international protection applicants, it's not right I heard Anne Rabbitte yesterday say of the Ukrainians 'but these are people seeking international protection' as if the 7000 in DP are not.
#Corofin
Yesterday a local man in his 70s who approached some self appointed vigilantes manning the gate of a place they believe international protection applicants are to be housed in was hit with a torch and put in hospital. Peaceful protest my you know what.
It is entirely legal to enter the Irish state to seek asylum, even by unconventional means and routes. We also have that right to seek asylum in other countries. These are good things, worth fighting for, most people never thought they'd be refugees.
Lads, if a population, a people, who are enduring an extended and extreme attempt to wipe them out (i.e genocide) ask us to boycott an entertainment event, in a non violent act of solidarity, I think its the very very least we could do, no?
#Eurovision2024
Dear Government. If we have all these J&J vaccines coming can we please vaccinate the people in Direct Provision Centres? People are living in close quarters and many of them employed in caring and service industry.
@MichealMartinTD
If it's not illegal to own 11 properties (homes) and to be paid by the taxpayer via the government you are part of to rent them out to people your same government has failed to provide homes for then maybe maybe something is wrong with the system
#Thread
/ RANT! In Ireland we are having public debate about migration within a couple of entirely wrong frameworks. I am not talking about the far right here. I am talking about Government and media. The first wrong framework is a scarcity framework-
In Ireland there are 45,000 people in some form of emergency accommodation such as direct provision centres, homeless shelters and hotels and there are 66,135 holiday homes and 166752 vacant properties.
So the pope had never heard of Mother and Baby Homes, Magdalene Laundries or Industrial Schools. That will tell you all you need to know about whether the church is ready to face the truth.
#Stand4Truth
🧵 Corofin County Clare is the next place that a minority group of racists are planning a blockade. Enabled by the Garda and political inaction in Inch every gobshite in the country will now want their own special blockade to keep their own special community pure.
A lot of people on here are talking about our 'previous' mistakes regarding the asylum and refugee processes and accommodation. They are not 'previous' they are happening now. We have not ended Direct Provision and are not even close to doing so.
Just when you're about to give up on twitter this happens. Did none of you peasants think of the Big House
occupiers and how they might feel about booking The WolfeTones? No, not even one of you...
#400welcomes
I'm calling on the Irish Government to offer refuge to 400 people out of the 13000 who are stranded in Lesvos without proper shelter we can do it and we should.

Remember this? The people of Ramallah thanking Ireland for its support. No matter what names you get called don't drop the solidarity, from Ireland to Palestine it's important and noticed.
This happened in Ramallah today, a wonderful Palestinian city in the central West Bank located 10 km north of Jerusalem. I cried watching this 🥲 Ireland 🇮🇪 says thank you

Remember when they sent 400 guards to Ballinaboy in Mayo to beat people such as Pat O'Donnell and Mary Corduff off the road with batons for a sit down protest against a polluting gas project...
Rural Ireland is made up of carers, Snas, mechanics, builders, teachers, postpeople, shop keepers, B&B owners, hotel staff, manufacturing and tech workers, plumbers, carpenters, animal trainers, artists, artisans, crafts people, small holders, community workers, council workers ++
We need huge investment in the north inner city, youth workers, community workers, amenities, arts, health and housing, we need a huge crack down on the far right fash who've been running rampant and we need proper supports for migrants and communities to help with integration.
The awful fash-vaccine crew came to Ennis yesterday and they were met by a counter protest fair play
@sarahferrigan
but particular credit to a group of trolling teenagers who had rainbow flags and spiderman and these great signs.
Dog has got extremely possessive about firewood. He will be devastated if we burn them now. He saw one go in fire and has taken the rest to his bed to hide them.
No one should be trying to cater for their personal needs on €38 per week in Ireland. Not IP applicants, not Ukrainians, not disabled people, not Travellers, not homeless people, no one. Relegating people in our society to poverty is harmful and counter productive.
They were young and scared, and trying to get to Ennis train station to get back to city west, I couldn't pick them up, (in a van without enough seat belts and a dog) but I told them I'll get help, they looked a bit doubtful.
When Eamon Ryan advocates for free public transport, proper funding for retrofitting, a just transition for famers and an end to fossil fuel infrastructure in Ireland then I might listen to him. I'm old enough to remember him saying the Corrib Gas project was a transition project
Aodhan O'Riordan was woeful as junior minister in the DOJ, he was shocking on DP and asylum seekers and he told Justice for Magdalene's that they needed to learn when a campaign was over!! (It's still not over). He was part of same govt and defended the cuts made by Joan Burton.
A lot of single people really need measures targeted towards them to reduce poverty. Single parents receive some of these measures but single childless people are frequently in very insecure situations particularly as regards housing, rent and bills.
@adriancummins
Pay and conditions. Loss of absolutely vital income supports entailed in taking up low paid employment. Lack of accommodation in areas where the service industry Jobs are. Poor opportunities for progress, cost of transport, cost of childcare.... Will I go on... Also shit jobs.
All over the continent and Nordic countries people go around naked all the time in saunas, showers open air swimming places and beaches. Naked is not abuse and being trans has nothing to do with abuse, nor does being LGBTQIA, black, Arab, Traveller, Roma, etc etc. Abusers abuse.
It's hard to face monday in a country where people think it's okay to say they'd rather protect tourism than women, children and yes even men fleeing war. Our govt has spectacularly mishandled this but honestly my fellow Irish people check your hearts and see what you stand for.
Sinn Fein not attending St Patrick's Day at the White House and media releasing and publicising why not is a much more powerful message to Irish America and Joe Biden than attending and trying to sneak in a few mentions of Gaza during a cosy chat about Ireland.
I was at a garden party and Michael D's speech was 🔥🔥🔥 he took on racism, militarism, EU imperialism, colonisation and nuclear weapons and that was just at a community event for tea and cakes...
I see another direct provision centre is getting an onsite shop where residents can spend points. We've plenty / supermarkets/ ethnic food stores here, these plantation stores cause isolation and profiteering. Let the well paid operators provide transport for residents instead

street. In Ireland there are 166,000 non derelict vacant properties, we have a 16 billion annual surplus, a crisis in our health services, in care work and in construction for want of workers, we've a housing policy crisis with 11,000 people homeless plus..
1/3 I work for a tiny organisation. We are registered with because we contact politicians about for example Travellers and disabled people's rights, housing, poverty, environment etc. Once, my fault, I missed the deadline for the report by a day.
Power went in our house last week- a fuse, we had to turn everything on and off to find it. Mistakenly it appears we turned on an electric heater and I just thought it was a bit stuffy upstairs. Four days it's been on. We are ruined. Ruined. They will repossess the dog.
Hot take: Unless the Government 100 % funds retrofitting it will not happen at the scale needed. No one I know can afford the short term up front cost. Yet the state will pay for carbon offsets if we don't meet targets. Paying for retrofitting is surely better policy.
I don't see any reason they shouldn't be held to account - it's either all of us, or none of us. Anyone can make mistakes, but how we are treated should be the same whether we're Ministers or carers or social welfare recipients. That's democracy.
Verona Murphy just rewarded for her racist outbursts by a prime almost ten minute interview on RTE Radio. This is how it works. What other minor, previously unelected candidate will get such an opportunity?
It is completely possible to be against US imperialism (in fact against all of its foreign affairs policy and actions) and still be horrified at the Taliban taking control. This should not be too complicated a thought to hold.
The organising and messaging for what's happening tonight has been going on unchecked for more than 5 years now... We know the names and faces of people who've been desperately trying to incite this type of rampage. No action has been taken at all.
Thread- about the vote in EU Parliament. It occurs to me that maybe we are not talking loudly enough about the hundreds of actions people and local businesses are doing quietly to support and welcome international protection applicants in the face of terrible govt failings
We needed infrastructure in our town so we collaborated with far right fash and then got together to burn hotels & shout at children and we did it so great and so brave the riot squad came and if we win we'll have an empty hotel & no new infrastructure and a rep for bigotry.
Thread. Dublin Pride has got one of the key people who oversaw direct provision on their website and introducing a part of their programme. Direct Provision is an absolute disaster that has kept people in miserable uncertainty and excluded from Irish society.
To any politician who wants my vote I don't want a tax cut until no one's granny is on a trolley waiting for treatment, or while there's even one baby growing up in a hotel room with no space to run and crawl and learn. Also tax Apple, tax Google, tax unessential flights etc etc
There is absolutely no practical or pragmatic or moral reason that Ireland should become further involved in non peacekeeping military activities. We are tiny, our military can not even protect ourselves BUT it has a huge amount to offer in other ways.
This is what will happen if we meet a normal person with a penis where we don't expect it. If we meet someone who wants to assault us, it won't make a damn bit of difference if they are in the right loos or not, gender neutral loos would actually make people safer. All people.
@FT
You know this was a riot led by white Irish people and yet you use an image of a black person? Do you think this helps or are you after cheap clicks?
Wouldn't this drive you mad. You should have your dinner at 3pm and wash your clothes at 2 am and relax at the tv at 11 am just so the data centres can suck up all the available renewables...
My congratulations to the furious, informed and dedicated disabled people and carers who've singlehandedly made
#VoteYesNo
a realistic progressive option. Whatever happens tomorrow I hope you'll never go unheard again.
A few years back, the anti deportation movement in Ire was being led by school kids objecting to their friends being threatened. Now, communities all over the country are objecting to having asylum seekers moved away from their towns. The majority of people are decent.
Thread. I'm asking all my artists, musicians, writer and performer followers for something: can you please make it your new year's resolution to sign up to the Irish Cultural Boycott of Israel which currently has almost 1000 signatories? Read on so that I can explain why...
One of the things that will mystify future scientists if humans continue to exist will be how a late capitalist obsession with transgender people emerged in wealthy countries as a key issue for debate in the face of climate breakdown and the annihilation of the whole species.
I'll be voting for Clare Daly in Dublin, I have huge admiration for her work and her integrity. I don't agree with her positioning on some issues, which is why I haven't campaigned for her but if Niall Boylan is elected I can't tell you how much I'll regret my costly purism.
Who's running direct provision centres? Contractors for the state. Who is responsible? Society? 'generational society?' Nope. Current and former governments particularly Justice Ministers (yes you Charlie, Frances, Helen) civil servants, looking at you IPAS and IPO...
They'd mostly been 2 or 3 years in refugee camps in Lebanon, and they all ran down to the sea children women and men straight into the water, one woman and her daughter swam and swam and swam they were so far out I went to get the life guard
It's not the sea, it's the policies, it's not the boats, it's the borders, humans have everywhere and always migrated, it is a fact of our existence, and we've no birth right or magic nationality that gives us a right to stop anyone else from getting to where they need to be.
I was in Dalkey yesterday omg what is Dalkey? When I am supreme leader of this country all those gated houses blocking the whole access to the sea and the coast and the views and even the light will be turned into parks and campsites and be filled with jollities.
And while most decent people in Clare don't want people to have to live in institutions, the story to date from the community has been one of welcomes- of typical Clare craic of music gigs, coffee mornings, day trips to the beach and cliffs for the newcomers,
It's interesting that I've heard Eamon Ryan speak on issues as diverse as wolves and what we should plant on our south facing window sills and how we can share cars in the country, but not a word about the Mother and Baby Homes Bill. Not a word.

Elected TD, Violet Anne Wynne in West Clare holding a sign that infers children are at risk from international protection applicants. Yesterday she said it was about dentists and services, today it's just ordinary racism.
I was immediately and unequivocally fined 200 euros. No one said I was nice, or well liked or that the issue was minor. Or that I didn't profit in any way. When I see things such as politicians forgetting they own houses, or forgetting a donation
