Shocking news that the
#AHRC
are radically reducing number of funded PhDs in
#Humanities
. Without a funded doctorate (by AHRC), I wouldn’t have been able to be an academic. Really hoping this policy is reconsidered, otherwise the future of
#Humanities
research in UK looks grim.
We are making some changes to our doctoral provision. These changes are designed to establish a sustainable and balanced portfolio for AHRC and continue investment in arts and humanities research talent at the doctoral stage. More info:
Today sees the launch of LESBIANTIQUITY, , translations of all

texts relating to women loving women, translated by a team of

How dare you claim you’re protecting me: trans people are no threat at all to me as a woman. Trans people are my

siblings & comrades & deserve to be treated with respect & decency.
I took a wrong turn somewhere in life and now I am looking up 'testicles' in The Latin Sexual Vocabulary, trying to work out if testicles were an object of desire to the Romans.
Left a message with the 11 y o's primary school to say he was off sick. They called me back half an hour later to remind me that he now goes to secondary school.

I've just been told that the fact that we have visibly queer members of staff here
@Durham_Classics
is a factor in some of our research students choosing to join our community. This is lovely news. 🌈
Just saved myself from sending an email with the typo "wordcunt"; will never look at wordcounts the same way again, and can't quite believe I never made that error before.
As of today, I’ve served 5 years as HoD
@Durham_Classics
; I’ve got 1 month to go (my predecessor left early & HoDs normally start in Aug) but wanted to mark this somehow. I’ve enjoyed most of the job (even much of the hard stuff) but I will admit I am looking forward to a break.
The news that Leiden are ending all bachelors degrees in Latin is a terrible blow for
#Classics
- there is such a long and distinguished history of the subject there. Also awful to see other humanities subjects treated in this way.
The dying humanities at Leiden University.
Arabic has been taught at Leiden since 1586. Leiden holds the oldest continual chair of Arabic in Europe, established in 1613.
Budget cuts from central government combined with faculty deficit (over 5million euros) will batter the
I have just heard that today my book, Masculine Plural: Queer Classics, Sex, and Education has been published. Alas, I don't have an advance copy as there was a problem with the printers, so no image to share yet, but I am very happy that it is finally out there.
For

here’s one of my favourite translations of the wonderful Sappho, who I’ve been delighted to turn my lesbian attention to recently.
Had to pop into office
@Durham_Classics
today & sad to see our “mask up” poster has disappeared from the front door, but still mighty proud of this

poster we made!
Straight people never get that coming out isn’t one dramatic act you can do once & it’s over & done with. Again & again we are forced to come out & it is tiring.
I came out to my mum when I was 16 - I refused to read one of the grimmer bits of Leviticus at a family wedding. Yesterday I came out to a woman in bookshop who clocked my wedding ring & asked me if missed my wife while working away.
#comingout
isn’t one moment - it’s a lifetime.
Don’t normally tweet food pics, but I’ve been feeling rotten with cold & feel restored after cooking
@Nigella_Lawson
’s pappardelle with nduja & cavolo Nero (even without most of the actual ingredients, busking it).
Strange dream: after the apocalypse I lived with other survivors in Durham Cathedral & when we’d venture out into the world, we’d carry a copy of Catullus with us as a mark that we were civilised.
Delighted today by tale told by a former student - waiting outside the building 4 a 9 am lecture for my ‘Love & Sex in Ancient Poetry’ module, she went up to a random guy outside the building & asked him if he was also there 4 love & sex ...
One reply to this is not enough. When I got my BA in 1997, we never saw a set of marking criteria, never got 2nd year exams back, never understood the arcane marks we were given. I worked hard for my degree but I see today's students working harder. There is no grade inflation.
We want
#universities
to stop artificial grade inflation and reset the norm on the proportion of first class and 2:1 degrees they award. We owe it to the hardworking students who have earned those top grades to stop this unfair practice. 🎓👉
To get you Latin lovers in the mood for Valentine's, I wrote a piece on Romosexuality: big dicks, orgies, sexy Latin, Anne Lister, and even true love – via

! I’m cooking pasta to go with my wife’s homemade pesto in this photo. Yum. & just to spell this out, trans women can - obviously - be lesbians.
Just wanted introduced our 7 y o to the idea that some people are playwrights & he’s very taken with idea that they write something & the actors have to perform that; he wants to write a scene where actors have to get their bums out on stage.
Is this the smile of someone who has finished their book on Housman? (When is a book actually finished? When with publisher for review? Revised draft? Proofs & index done? When it’s out?). Anyway, it’s with the publisher for review & I’m getting away from it in the woods.
Hope it doesn't count as tweeting about work to note that today is Ovid's birthday. I've spent much research time thinking about Ovid, but also had so much pleasure just from reading him.
Asked today by yet another stranger: "so which one of you is [our son's] mother?"; replied calmly that we both are, but this is just one reason why
#Pride2019
is so necessary.
Cats are great (even though I’m allergic) but rabbits are even better & woefully underrepresented on Twitter. This is Ginny & she is the boss rabbit (& best).
Unbelievable that some people choose to insult students as snowflakes - a generation that has displayed incredible resilience in a plague, & grace in accepting restrictions to protect their elders.

Today I had to go & close down the buildings of
@Durham_Classics
. It brings a daily beauty to my life & I’m sad to have to keep away for the foreseeable.
I do not understand LGB folk who are taking part in the current awful attacks on trans folx; how can they not understand that the same people hate us all, and that one reason for this hatred is the idea that we are somehow doing gender wrong?

, I am delighted to say I have a chapter in this great volume, & it’s all about Ovidian homoerotics in the elegies - even the apparently straight can be pretty queer.
Really excited at what today’s post brought - handsome edited volume on the Loeb Classical Library & its progeny. I’ve got a piece in it on Burton & Smithers’ Catullus & I’m excited to read the rest of it.
Does anyone else read Latin out loud while adding it to documents? This is my long-standing habit (to avoid typos & practise unseen scansion) but my wife heard me from the next room & thought I was summoning the dark lord ...
Happy birthday, Ovid! This Ovid wine looks very tasty but I have never had the chance to try it - but will still be raising a glass or two to the best of poets later today.
Really delighted to have an essay on Ovidian homoerotics in this new volume & grateful to
@Joewatstein
as my research assistant for helping me get this to press.
This is great news - obviously I’ve got skin in the game, but studying Latin & Roman lit & culture transformed & enriches my life. So glad the chance to study Latin is being opened up to more people.
I've ended up working in our 8 yo's room today and the urge to bunk off work and carry on reading his Percy Jackson novel is very strong. It's classical reception, it counts as work, right?
It’s the first day of a new term
@Durham_Classics
& what wouldn’t I give to be able to walk back into this beautiful building & catch up with colleagues & students ...
Many congratulations to
@edithmayhall
on her appointment as Fellow of the British Academy. We are so delighted and proud to work with her here
@Durham_Classics
Just realised we have a great pirate ship backdrop from our son’s birthday party; would it damage my dignitas & mystique as HoD too much to use it for videocalls?
We had a power cut in our building, and then the power came back on and I said "I love power" out loud, and am now worried my colleagues think I am a power-crazed Head of Department.
The Daily Mail hit job today on
@DurhamSUpres
& the earlier article targeting the other officers as well are beneath contempt.
I will not share them but please know that you have our support in
@ucuatdurham
. We are immensely proud to stand beside you.
Past me abandoned some research on
#Ovid
this summer as I couldn't see a way ahead in the light of some recent publications , but looking at the piece again today, I can see how to move on, and I seem to have written something like 70% of the piece already ...
Delighted to hold a copy of this volume on
#LatinElegy
, which
@TEFranklinos
& I, his former supervisees, put together (with other mentees) in an act of filial piety to celebrate
@wadhamoxford
’s Steve Heyworth. Now hoping I don’t find any typos!
All dressed up & somewhere to go! Our students
@DUClassSoc
are hosting their annual Saturnalia. At first the thought of dressing up was a bit much but its actually rather nice. I even have real trousers on, not the PJs I contemplated.
Today I cannot get this A. E. Housman poem out of my head - my book on him talks a lot about his verses about stars, but not this one. I think it’s perfect in its realism & simplicity.
Today I had to chair a big departmental meeting from an utterly inadequate workspace & then go straight to another meeting (4.5 solid hours on Teams!) but, look, I have new shoes! & I love them.
