My latest peer-reviewed article "Behind the Pursuit of ‘Frozen Garlic’: Changing Trends of Get-Out-the-Vote (GOTV) Campaigns in Taiwan" in the Journal of Taiwan Politics is now available online:
My op-ed in
@Diplomat_APAC
about
#HongKong
District Council Election last Sunday. For the pro-democracy, election under autocracy is just a means to resist, not never an end of it. Protesters sacrifice and risk themselves not for seats, but for freedom.
26 years ago, even Apple Daily, the only pro-democracy newspaper in hk back in the days, was optimistic about the prospect of 1c2s. Looking back, we all know that having faith in CCP was a mistake.
This is blatant racism embedded in the primary school textbook of Hong Kong:
“I have black eyes, black hair and yello skin, so I am a National Chinese (zhong guo ren).”
Just don't assume that those countries under protests (Hong Kong, Thailand, Myanmar, or Sri Lanka after a few months etc.) are all back to normal and doing well if they are out of your sight or no longer show up on your social media newsfeed/TV headline.
Don’t just fall into reminiscence. We need to ask ourselves: why was I there? Am I still working on it even in a minimal manner? Have I taken good care of myself over the years?
Carry on Hongkongers! The Revolution of Hong Kong starts from a mini-revolution of ourselves.
CCP: foreigners should learn Chinese in order not to be fooled by negative narratives on China
Foreigners: I did not realized I got fooled by CCP’s self-narratives until I learned Chinese
What's going on with the new District Councils reform in Hong Kong? In the past, >90% of DC seats were democratically elected, but now:
40% are appointed
40% are indirectly selected
20% are directly "elected"
However, this is not the end of story 🧵(1/5):

This is definitely a murder. The Hong Kong Police shot the fucking bullet on a protestor! This is unacceptable given the fact that the police was clearly not under a life-threatening situation.

protest on June 9th 2019 (was helping in counting involved orgs). 3 years later, 6 out of 9 (except CP, DP and LSD) had ceased operation. What a demise of civil society in Hong Kong under NSL
Starting Jan 2024, I will be a

dissertation fellow for 4 months. Throughout the fellowship period, I will spend the last semester of my PhD in Taiwan to wrap up my dissertation and conduct fieldwork studies. Here I come again, 牛肉麵!
(Still on the market tho…)
It sounds ruthless but there is just nothing much a political scientist can do when seeing his/her own country depraving or being dismembered by autocrats bit by bit.
I am talking about
#HongKong
, my hometown. There is nothing much I can do rn except writing this tweet.
My first solo peer-reviewed article on⚽️ fandom and Hong Kong nationalism was (swiftly) assigned to the latest issue of JSSI just now! I feel like I should write a thread on it since this seems to be a rising ritual on Twitter recently 🧵:

(1/N)
Hi my fds, esp. those who speak German, can I have your signature for this petition so that we can urge the German Bundestag to organize a hearing concerning the human right issues in
#HongKong
?
Don't be scared by the German content, you will find the tutorial below!
(1/2) Petition on urging the German Bundestag to sanction China for imposing "National Security Law" in Hong Kong.
There will be a hearing in the German Bundestag if we have more than 50,000 signatures by 20/10.
Please act now:
So now even "intending to obtain majority seats in the legislature" can constitute a violation of NSL, those pro-union/1c2s democrats in
#HongKong
should recognize the fact that democratization in HK would never happen 1. in a linear way, and 2. under the same paradigm (1c2s).
Finally, here comes my first solo-authored peer-review journal article (also my favorite so far). TLDR, I argue that the recent rise of collective fandom (e.g. ultras) in the HK ntl⚽ team was triggered by 2 things: HKer id, and democratic movements.
On Jan 26, 1841, the arrival of the British kickstarted modern Hong Kong. 182 yrs on, this little city-state has become the hometown of mine and many. The origin of our ancestors varies vastly, but for different reasons, we all now share a home here. HBD HK, & I miss u so much.
This is exactly how absurdity becomes normality in
#HongKong
.
A FB page managed by 2 civil servants disclosed that a cop was slacking off at work. But guess what, the 2 admins (instead of the slacker) were arrested 2 weeks later:
I am beyond thrilled to announce that starting from this August I will serve as an Adam Smith Fellow (non-resident) at the Mercatus Center
@mercatus
of GMU in the year of 2022-23. It means a lot to me because this will be my first ever external fellowship in my academic journey.
In my 1st year PhD life I tried so hard to strike a balance b/t being frustrated by
#HongKong
news and coursework + assistant duties, but it just gets harder for me to do so as things in HK go more intense. Still, condition in HK reminds me that I’m a lucky one.

1. Chen Zhen,a Chinese teacher hired by
@polimi
Politechnico di Milan, uses class time to 'educate' a Taiwan Student not to use Taiwan as a country but a part of China.
This is clearly bullying and inappropriate behavior as a teacher.

What does
@HKUniversity
mean by no longer recognising
@hkusu_official
’s role on campus? A university without the autonomy of student organizations will be a disastrous one.
OH WOW
@BrownUniversity
is inviting CY LEUNG! SERIOUSLY? Are we really that short of expertise on HK and CN issues in the United States or across the world? I don't think this despicable figure can bring any useful insight to the summit except spreading the CCP propaganda.
Guess what —
@BrownUniversity
has invited the HKSAR’s former Chief Executive C.Y. Leung — who passionately campaigned for the CCP’s crackdown against Hong Kong’s human rights and genocide against Uyghurs to its 2023
#BrownChinaSummit
.
In the meantime, I am also notified that my revised prospectus has been accepted by my committee, which makes me officially an ABD (anything but dissertation)!
More interestingly, unlike previous disqualifications that they made their own decision, this time the whole action is “authorized” by the NPCSC. The HKSAR govt is again downgrading themselves and handing off their autonomous power to China. “One country two systems” is a joke.
It is not great to make fun of people’s broken English, but it is even worse for Chinese tourists to assume that all Hongkongers can speak Mandarin.
DAMN IT I FUCKING HATE COLONIALISM.

prof was shot in a building that is only 5-mins walk from mine today. Luckily I left uni unusually early for errands, just 45 mins before the mishap, or I could have become a witness or even taken the live round. I'm so fucked to be exposed to this form of fear in US.
CUHK's student union disbanded today.
"For fifty years CUSU existed as an independent student organization whose representatives were elected through a democratic process. It is a matter of profound regret that CUSU is now history," the statement said.
“Taiwan is so democratic and economically advanced already. Why do you still study vote buying there?”
Me: Because it is still a thing even as of this moment.
👇🏻
2 reasons for HKers (inc. pro-indept) to commemorate June 4th:
1. reminding HKers that CCP cant be trusted.
2. it did affect HK profoundly (largest protest in HK hist before anti-ELAB, rewriting of Basic Law, first main momentum for HK demo movt etc.)
(Pic: me in TAMS 11 yrs ago)

I finally withdrew my first solo-authored manuscript from a journal that put me on hold for ~1 year and re-submitted it to another. All journal editors should realize that this irresponsible action is detrimental to jr scholars who are desperate for feedbacks & publications.
9 years of jail for TONG Ying-kit, the first national security law convict in

who rode his motorcycle with the liberation flag into the cops. 9 years. How much more grievance do HKers still have to take before justice is served?

I am shocked (but perhaps not too surprised) when I can still hear faculties in the US not being aware of the OPT issue when it comes to the timing of graduation for international PhD students.
After all, as expected, with all the institutional hurdles, the "rectified" DCs, even for the directly elected part, are FAR FROM DEMOCRATIC. This marks the real end of (partial) representative democracy in Hong Kong. [End of Thread] (5/5) 🧵

Imagine how hard it is to name a US-based political scientist who studies the Politics of Hong Kong for real.
Imagine how rarely Hong Kong is mentioned in the top 3 poli sci journals.
You will realize that HK is just on the margin of the margin.
Besides the appointed 40%, the other 60% (40+20) are guarded by 3 local gov-appointed committees (委員會): area (分區), fight crime (撲滅罪案), and fire safety (防火). 40% are selected by them. For direct elections (20%), nomins from them are required. (2/5) (pic: the Points)
It just feels so great when you are able to effectively finish a couple of submission deadlines on time within a day. Now let me just call it a day and clean up my mind for another one tmr. Ush!
I hate politics, but I’m pursuing a Polisci PhD (my career plan in high school was to become a history teacher); I hate how my loneliness being amplified by social media, but I’m studying social media; I dun even like turmoils, but now I study social movement. Hilarious isn’t it?
What's worse, the new DCs will be chaired by gov-appointed District Officers instead of councilors themselves, meaning that even symbolic separation and symbolic autonomy will no longer exist. They want their grip strictly tightened. (4/5)
After my fd from HK asked how he should write his diversity statement for his PhD application, I realized that being good at writing a ds is also a privilege. Think about the underprivileged from monoethnic countries whose sense of diversity is limited by their life experience.

Another gate for challengers is that traditional SMD (1s1v) voting is replaced by Binomial Voting (2s1v). The system encourages collaborations within blocs to secure seats. It is expected to maintain cohesion within the pro-CN bloc in the new era. (3/5)
Let me tell you how fucked up the US healthcare is. My friend panicked due to $ and dissertation. Her psychiatrist suggested hospitalization & claimed that her insurance would cover. Turns out her 2-night hospitalization cost her 1.5k AFTER insurance. She struggles even more.
The fact that the registration + membership fee for the MPSA conference has eaten up 80% of my annual travel allowance from my dept is beyond hilarious...
Pizza Hut Taiwan is announcing this “ring fit” pizza as their April Fool prank this year. With this empty pizza, they wanna cease fire with Italians and all other ethnic groups who are offended by inappropriate ingredients on the dough.

I FUCKING hate this.
It might be a hot take, but I think universities shd provide free grammar-assist app subscriptions for all non-native speakers to make up for the language ability gap. U just can't imagine how long it would take for ESL ppl to figure out an accurate way to describe ideas in Eng.
Dun wanna ethnically stereotype ignorant people, but I would like to echo that like Taiwanese, Cantonese is also NOT a dialect. It shares characters with Mandarin but they are different (even more different than Portuguese vs. Spanish). (1/n)
An op-ed by Prof. Eric Ma on Ming Pao in Feb 2013 revealed that HK Studies and home-grown scholars were dying out. Fewer scholars in HK were willing to study HK and publish in Chinese for tenure concerns.

I have to say I really enjoy seeing these new labels on Twitter reminding people the source of their information. The seem-to-be elegant abbreviation can no longer disguise the media’s strong ties with the Chinese government.
