Ultimately, righteousness will prevail. It is in the nature of things that a cruel, perverse and oppressive order cannot go on indefinitely. But it could happen at a tremendous cost, after a great upheaval that upsets everything we take for granted.

The fact that any match between Djokovic and Alcaraz is hyped as part of a budding "rivalry", notwithstanding the implausibility of a rivalry between players sixteen years apart, is actually a tribute to Novak's longevity. Among his peers, he truly is the last man standing.

Some tennis observers still doubt that the 3-year Australian ban on Novak will be lifted. If they exclude a player (ntm one of the greatest ever) for political reasons for a second year running, they should ideally be stripped of the privilege of hosting a Grand Slam tournament.

At this point, the anti-Djokovic agenda of yellow journalists (pathetic excuses for journalists) is so obvious that one has to be blind, whether wilfully or negligently, not to see it. Just in the last two weeks, he has had hostility directed at him for all kinds of reasons.

Still reading some takes to the effect that Djokovic is faking injury. Why would he need to fake when he is so much better than the rest of the field here? That is really such an unworthy line of thinking about any professional athlete, let alone one of the greatest ever.

Novak Djokovic deserves the highest credit for coming through smear campaigns against him with his reputation enhanced and his head held high. A weaker person, no matter how well-off or prominent, would be destroyed by what he has gone through, or sell out to the bullies.

When Federer held the record of weeks at number one all these years, we never heard of Steffi Graf's tally of 377. Now, with Djokovic tearing up the record books, we have such (extraneous) considerations brought into the discussion. The women's game is altogether distinct.

I feel sorry for those who cannot appreciate Djokovic as a player or a person. They spent years clinging to hope that he could be stopped, and now that it's clear he can't be, they take recourse to tired tropes/clichés to diminish his greatness. They are missing out on a lot.

Quite. The great Federer, in particular, saw Novak as an upstart, as somebody who was a good player but nothing spectacular, who needed to be put in his place. The contrast with Novak's own attitude towards Carlos couldn't be starker.

Last Orthodox Christmas, Novak Djokovic was in Australian immigration detention, being treated like a criminal for no fault of his own. It was a precursor to his scandalous deportation. It is an episode that should be remembered with shame, an exercise in reversion to barbarism.

This was Novak's most intelligent and astute performance of 2024, in approach to the match and certainly in execution. Good win in a tricky matchup. Clearly still has it in him to compete on fast courts. Also delivered a metaphorical punch in the face to the Anglo hooligans.

As of now, Djokovic only needs to win two more matches in Paris to re-enter the Race top 8. Hopefully he wins and renders the hand-wringing by Briggs, and others superfluous. He is the best player in the world regardless of official rankings. His spot is unambiguously deserved.

I didn't want to give the Rodionova affair any attention, but this is just dumb. Not sure what she hopes to achieve by doubling down on the injury faking accusations and by generalising Novak fans as anti-vaxx. She would do well to focus on her game.

I don't get why people should be expected to shut up about the Djokovic situation. During the AO, it felt like a freakish aberration because it was so unprecedented for our generation. But then he got kept out of the biggest North American events, including the Open itself.

@Zwxsh It is a harmless aspect of Wimbledon's tradition and as such needs no further justification. No reason to change it.

I really appreciate Carlos's behaviour. He is respectful of greatness and it looks like Novak and he really appreciate each other. This attitude will serve him well. Chapeau.

This is refreshing. Novak has had enough of taking the high road after last year, so he is on a counteroffensive. Apparently, he also understands that the "establishment" is no conspiracy theory, but a real force that shapes perceptions and can make or break a public figure.

#Djokovic : Again, I am publicly asking a question: why didn’t the ATP or the Grand Slam come out and explain the situation, when they can see that the media are publicly lynching me? #AustralianOpen Full quotes at @Tennis_Majors 👇

Alcaraz has improved massively on grass, but Djokovic is a radically different proposition. I expect Djokovic to decisively win the serve-return dynamic. This is their first meeting on such a fast surface and the youngster could be caught off guard. Djokovic in 4.

This Rublev victory is a slap in the face to all of those calling him part of a "lost generation" and an "ATP 500 vulture". Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev, Rublev, Ruud, etc. are great players unfortunate to have come of age when Djokovic and Nadal were still a force.

What's this nonsense about Djokovic's desire to be loved? In one breath, the detractors say he craves love, and in the next, they say he doesn't care about PR. So which is it? Make up your minds, guys. And PTPA excluding women is a bare-faced lie. They should get informed.

The way this man dealt with crowds, a majority cheering hysterically for his opponent, is a lesson in itself. This reduced Federer to Salterer (recall the "lucky shot" comment). There was an element of luck, but it takes insane self-belief and courage to win from such positions.

Down double match point in the 2011 semifinals, @DjokerNole wasn't phased. He just produced perhaps the greatest return in US Open history. He'd win the 🏆 two days later.

Djokovic is the last and greatest representative of an age in which men's tennis reached stratospheric levels, not only with Fedal and Murray but with Berdych, Ferrer, Tsonga and others deserving much credit too. This generation is not cut from the same cloth. Not even close.

(15/17) Principally, he is attacked because he has the courage to think for himself and be a rebel, to take "controversial" positions, stand by them and argue them. Yet, those very traits make him admirable to others. I count myself among those who regard this as a virtue.

Seeing some posts by fans of Ons Jabeur, Paula Badosa and Hubi Hurkacz today criticising their faves for joining the PTPA. Why the scepticism? Is it primarily because Djokovic is involved? Surely, the players understand their own professional interests better than their fans do.

What is it with this crowd? Jiri is playing outrageous tennis and there is barely a whisper. Meanwhile, each of his unforced errors/double faults is lustily cheered. Do they not realise how outrageously biased they are? Can't they at least clap politely?

Rival fans would've been more comfortable if Nadal had been less successful on clay. If he had half of his current clay titles with an unchanged nonclay resume, he would be termed "complete" by the very ignoramuses who dismiss him as Claydal. He is a victim of his own success.

@LoveAsInZero I enjoy Iga's game. No huge serving, ballbashing or pushing. Just a high level of consistency, meticulous point construction, and calculated high-margin aggression. Elena's and Aryna's styles are based too much on raw power and big serving for my liking. Maybe that's just me.

On his 36th birthday, it is worth noting that Novak Djokovic will be remembered for his tremendous sporting achievements, but so much more. In an age of confusion and ruin, he sets a superb example when it comes to doing one's best no matter how adverse the circumstances.

No popularity contest will affect the salience and heroism of the example that Novak set this year. The usual suspects may try all the character assassination they want, but they have been discredited. His example will continue to resonate, far beyond the world of tennis. END

Haters when Djokovic plays at night, "the organisers pander to him. He is never exposed to the afternoon heat. This is unfair". When he plays in the daytime, "His opponent will finish later and have less time to recover. This is unfair".

It is rare to see Novak as emotional as he is after this win. These are tears of vindication and healing. What an example he is, in terms of standing for one's principles, embracing life as it comes and maintaining a steady equanimity in the face of its vicissitudes!

Why should Djokovic fans accept morality lessons from those who openly mocked and gloated at his deportation, mocked the Covid-unvaccinated, labelled his fanbase as anti-vaxxers, and are rarely sincere in evaluating him? Why do those haters harbour delusions of superiority?

Rafa's latest statements come across like they were made by his most zealous fans, who relentlessly deny his obsession even when it is very transparent, while projecting it on to his greatest rival. It all seems so disingenuous, so unnecessary, so unbecoming of a great champion.

If Rafa is in good enough shape to go toe-to-toe with de Minaur and possibly beat him, why were we made to believe that he is worse off than in Barcelona? Why did he say that if he arrives in this condition at Roland Garros, he probably wouldn't play? Are these just mind games?

5. The fact that even constant propaganda against him has not slowed him down (they needed an extraordinary default and deportation to do so, and each time, he actually came back stronger). 6. The fact that he loves his country and people despite their persistent demonisation.

If Novak wins this title after playing a group match (Daniil), the semifinal and the final on consecutive days, with the other semifinalist well rested, it will be a huge accomplishment given his age (not to mention the asymmetrical scheduling in common with others in his group).

It's funny how one of the most repeated pretexts for Novak's haters to hate on him is the racquet-smashing. It's as though they view refraining from racquet-smashing as the pinnacle of morality. That is a strange way to view an action that generally has no effect on others.
