Programme note - some final(ish) thoughts on theatre.
Don't work here any more so here's a bunch of anecdotes and things that've been on my mind as I won't be writing about performance going forwards cause of my new job.
Farewell, I guess! 🎭🎟️🌶️
at my mum's house for the first time since Christmas and mid-clothes clear out I'm just marvelled at the length of the dresses I'd wear
also who remembers these purses as a kid?

It is so confusing to me why wealthy people in this city move to transport dead zones. Crouch End? Muswell Hill? Dulwich? Hampstead or bust for me when I hit six figures
I feel like there's three levels of 'justice' floating around here. One, where individual families and loved ones see those responsible named. Another, where symbolic cases and protest works. Three, a just society where there isn't state apparatus to kill consistently like this.
Sorry but this demonstrates a fear I've been having for a good five or so years now. What happens when all the people who have girlhood/youth as their cultural lens of inquiry, many of whom are now closer to 40 than 14, can't admit their relationship to the material has shifted?
“I think of the uniqueness of Taylor Swift is that she speaks for an audience that is not always spoken for”
Kat McKenna, Taylor Swift fan and Author discusses the fandom around Taylor Swift
I think this Alice story should provide a bit of context for why people might seen reductive about age gaps. I've mentioned this before, but I started getting horrible waves of joyfully watching teens on the tube in my 20s, thinking "Ha, oh god they're so young!" and realising
It is really funny how you can't say 'I think it's bad vibes to publicly celebrate a lucrative deal with a brand paying people £3.50 an hour in Leicester with a £35k bracelet' without having to be like 'but I'd absolutely totally invite her to my birthday drinks, what a babe! 💖'
*We* looked so obviously young at that time. Which meant that my friends did when they were getting hit on by much older men. Our eagerness to be convincingly mature was proof of how little experience we had had at that point
childcare not counting as a work expense for the self employed is a bit of a horror story tbh and I wish we spoke more about the realities of being a working parent more
sorry I am still hung up on those redundancies, on people restructuring their lives. not to get all 'being not ok is valid ❤️' twitter but if you lost your job this week or before, I completely appreciate this must be a jarring set of events
If there's any justice in the world, this would be the first social media account to win a Pulitzer.
Because how dare you fly from S. America to NYC for dinner and then back down again mid-tour?? How have we allowed this
Feudalism alive and well! Isn't there a village in Wales where all their homes got bought up by one couple and now they're facing huge rent hikes?
It's not very Britannia Unleashed to have all these monopolies developing now, is it
I genuinely and longstanding-ly have thought that the myth of 'instant' delivery and access is/will cause a moral rot that hides itself better than "just" having personal servants
The food recipients checked their order but something was amiss. They wanted to ask Mohammed & pointed to his bag. I asked if they had no humanity. They then stepped over Mohammed & went upstairs to dine on the incomplete order Mohammed may have given his life to deliver them. 8/
Contempt of court is real.
Sharing/RTs of statements that suggest the outcome of an ongoing case is a foregone conclusion can risk the trial not going ahead. It's not common knowledge but if you've been politely asked to delete, please do! Even if you think it's silencing.
Just not going to agree with this sudden consensus the night bus is too dangerous to use, sorry - and this is from semi-regular use from my late teens to zone 4 from central/south east ldn
Ok but I actually think it's out of order the arts council are postponing grant decisions... people need to know what cash they've got coming in. It's not like ACE employees or civil servants are going to have to wait an extra fortnight before receiving their pay out of respect
@HadleyFreeman
I'm asking this so seriously: do you think this is an edifying way to conduct yourself in response to multiple accounts of sexual assault and abuse? It's about... neither of you
really impressed people have managed to make Johnson being an absentee PM actually about how Owen Jones is the downfall of modern British journalism again
dunno how to say this but: if you're based in the UK, especially if you're white, and the only things you're donating to/RTing are US-based initiatives, it further adds to the narrative I'm seeing pumped out by conservative commentators here that it's only an American issue
This is how Anna Delvey got lauded as some kind of criminal mastermind when the infrastructure she was using (bad cheques) would've had you refused service at a post office by 1998.
I'll never understand why America loves money so much but is so shit at handling it still.
At the bar last night, the Zoomers were all paying with credit cards and closing out on every round. This is psycho behavior. Someone needs to teach these children how to go to the bar.
I got DYCP funding last week to support my non-fiction writing! First time I've got a yes on a project from ACE where I'm lead artist so hasn't sunk in yet, but looking forward to reading and researching about the clapped bint that is my body 🤓
@nthnashma
the idea flavourings and seasonings are 'poncy' is such a weirdly entrenched mid-century Briticism mixed with authenticity worries but like, get real!
You have to ask yourself about the moral character of someone willing and comfortable to use their wealth (gained through dynasty) to legally intimidate a trade union founded to protect fellow members of a famously precarious industry during a tough time for the sector
@alicemjslater
I just don't know why they don't factor in how many people *already* don't go to the doctor about health concerns because they know the conversation will just be about their weight? how is this helping?? ughhhhh
A lot of social mobility stories from people who grew up in the UK in the mid-20th century are about being moved up on a brief but seismic wave where income and robust social security, rather than inherited wealth, could get you places. Not all your parents were exceptional...
Edwina Curry saying John Major was a gentleman and always sat on the plug in the bath has haunted me for years so we really have to be careful what we wish for here
This is why feminist campaigners joining forces with the lawyered-up Christian right to demolish the Gillick competency principle should take a very long, hard look at themselves. And so too should politicians mindlessly bleating that all parents know the best for their kids.
@nthnashma
this is it - reading that section, it's not even though she sounds as though this is an overly pc reaction blah blah, she just seems straight up nonplussed
My lateral flow picked up I was positive while the PCR I took right after came back negative (eventually got a positive PCR): had this be the case for a few people - testing is weird but if you feel ill, just use common sense and stay at home if you can eh
Holloway is a rare town where both the McDonald's are late night and iconic last stops - between that, the coronet and all the supermarkets I honestly think it's slept on as a deeply functional place to live
Believing that nothing you do or say or think or feel until you hit the age of 25 matters is such a self-infantilising myth of the middle classes and I hate it so much. Please stop referring to yourselves as 33 year old teenagers, because our lawmakers seem to genuinely believe!
will delete but: sometimes i look at non-arts jobs and feel really trapped and not at all qualified for anything else? does anyone else feel like this? i do not feel particularly transferrable what if i *want* my next job to be in cyber! or at least the option
@jasebyjason
Literally is this not her actual job and the reason she gets those press appearances and book deals? Same way I think teachers unfortunately have to know who this guy is - it matters!
that we are corbyn hashtag is the absolute pinnacle of trash...I'm genuinely astonished people think it's a good idea or that you'd frame this whole thing in terms of 'well, the kindly allotment frequenter is in need of a boost' vs meaningful solidarity with a marginalised group
This is really shocking; there is also something to be said that between this and War Inna Babylon, it's taking an art collective to publicise things that during the 90s would've been the remit of a BBC1 Panorama documentary & should be mass communications

: theatre is in its flop era rn
Morale is low within the theatre sector, and recent programming and senior executive appointments aren't helping. What's going on? 😬🎭
shoutout to those ones whose photos I always hit like on on fb, people it's nice to be in a big overflowing table at a birthday pub with or in the kitchen at a house party - I like asking you questions once a quarter max and finding out what's going on in your life!
@jasebyjason
also the term 'middle class' evades so much...are you saying your mum is a university educated social worker or that your great-grandfather was running a colony? but basically this article
Can we just please remind ourselves the centre left of the Labour party had no workable ideas for several years - not sure what 'Don Valley's not as white as it used to be' Caroline Flint and 'John Lewis Labour' Tristram Hunt would've brought to our precarious, atomised lives
And while I'm here feeling ill and angry I just have to say: the concept of Whammageddon feels so churlishly mean spirited and British it genuinely makes me annoyed just thinking about it! It's a nice video and a good song by a nice man - what's your bloody problem??? 😡😡😡
Ah, how very sad. In a literary culture which too often undervalues the role charisma has in propelling the text, Zephaniah had it. His rejection of a waning empire's trinkets still stands as a provocation of other 2nd and 3rd gen artists whose work covers similar grounds. RIP.
@AyoCaesar
I'm asking because I'm genuinely intrigued: are you doing this to intentionally whip up bad feeling? Because is this really the time or really the target right now?
This is incredibly annoying and ridiculous advice. If a small treat tips you into financial instability or your overdraft, you're probably underpaid not "bad with money". Stuff in moderation, sure, but let's not pathologise small pleasures when our problem is wealth hoarding!
🔟Control emotional spending
It’s easy to buy something you don’t need or want when you’re bored or unhappy. It’s also easy to treat yourself when you’re happy.
Did you buy yourself a treat the last time you hit a milestone❓
Curious and frustrated by a style of modern conversation that means you'll be taken more seriously for saying 'gaslit' when 'strung along and disappointed' would easily suffice
And no maintenance grants either are you joking? People floating apprenticeships but you have to tackle the gender gaps there based on industry. 40 years of debt for a nursing degree...how on earth is this about 'Tarquins'
The country is about to face the biggest change to student finance in a decade.

Finding a take like this is so psychically rewarding to me. Like coming home after a long day, putting your coat on the hook and having a nice sit. There is absolutely nothing here to disturb my worldview, but there's a little bit of comic timing - and I think that's beautiful

'Black applicants had the lowest percentage accuracy with only 39.1% of grades accurately predicted, while white applicants had the highest grade prediction accuracy at 53%.'
Realise it's all very well and good saying 'join a union!' but not elaborating on that. So going to do a v informal, low stakes session one August morning on unions/organising for people who don't know what a hot strike summer means and too scared to ask
just sack them all. sack yourself too. sack that mp who claimed London 2011 was the fault of black households without father figures (my current MP and shadow justice during BLM lmao). it's a failed project, particularly on antiracist grounds
Watching The Traitors is mental because like...the average British person really finds a sales guy with an obvious ego problem genuinely trustworthy and understood as popular? I am so out of touch. All the time.
Lots of old colleagues expressing solidarity with rail and other striking workers today (excellent). But just a reminder that whether you work at a publisher, an arts venue or a train station, management relies on you to not understand your collective power to keep pay down
Honestly it's because she is fluent, to an extent no other popstar is, with the dominant form of self-expression of our times: the personal essay.
And I mean 'I have Imposter Syndrome/Elizabeth Day How to Fail' rather than Cat Marnell rock bottom stuff. Vulnerable, not gritty
I actually completely understand someone doesn’t have to be the most vocally gifted and technically talented for their music to have sweeping popular appeal and connect but the Taylor Swift cultural dominance is just baffling

Surely a better question is asking why a Muslim guy from Birmingham with a clear passion and tenacity in journalism has more luck getting support from Serial/NYT via a talk to make a pretty significant bit of journalism, yet the broadsheets don't seem to be nurturing that talent?
