Today marks a huge step forward for evidence-based sentencing in MI! Bills we fought long and hard for that will create Michigan's Sentencing Commission were finally signed into law by @GovWhitmer! Thank you to the bill sponsors and partner orgs who made this victory possible!

Unfortunately our Vital Documents bill was included in these. Thankfully, the concerns the governor's office raised should be easily addressed during the new legislative session so that these important bills can be passed in the near future. #MILeg

🙌HB4191-94 were also sent to @MIGovernor Whitmer during the Senate's marathon lame duck session! These #VitalDocuments bills ensure returning citizens get an ID when released. This small change removes significant barriers for people reestablishing a life on the outside. #MILeg

With 21 votes in favor, HB 4173 passed the Senate floor vote and heads to @MIGovernor Whitmer's desk! If signed, this will create a commission of 14 people - including a formerly incarcerated person & mental health professional - to oversee Michigan sentencing policies. #MiLeg

Lacking a quorum, the minimum number of members present to be able to hold a vote, the House adjourned this afternoon until 12/31, further delaying progress on the multiple bills we've hoped to see passed during lame duck. #MiLeg
