It's still incredible to me that Uber set up what were obviously illegal taxi operations, called it something else and eventually got virtually every city in North America to roll over, say "okay!" and either tear down taxi regulations or set up two parallel regulatory regimes.

I'm going to mention again that my solution to this is to set my billing address to Howard Jarvis's old home at 515 N Crescent Heights Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048, and, thanks to California's automatic renewal law (ARL), a cancellation button magically appears.

It's weird to me how the general American consensus on gambling snapped from "a thing you should have to travel way out of town to do as a treat" to "a thing in your pocket directly linked to your credit card that you should be able to do whenever wherever" in a handful of years.

"Menu costs", or the time and resources spent to update prices, are being reduced by new technologies such as LCD monitors. What results is less "price stickiness", or nominal rigidity, as prices can be cheaply and quickly updated, for example, using a Sharpie and masking tape.

However bad your weekend is going, just take solace in the fact that it's going better than my friend's, whose cruise ship is now going to Saint John, New Brunswick, instead of the Bahamas, due to weather.

Apparently the spirit of New York is spending excessive sums of public money on symbolic showpieces of negligible substantive benefit instead of building actually useful transportation infrastructure.

2020 has been dark but let's ring in 2021 with light. Today we celebrate the opening of the new Moynihan Train Hall in Manhattan. It was built in the spirit of New York — ambitious and bold.

@watch_rome_burn @Devon_Eriksen_ Truly nothing says "conscientious" like trying to insist on private control of public space.

@brianrmcguire @TheOmniZaddy Economists are only now understanding how the different adhesives in masking tape vs painters tape affect price stickiness and therefore inflation.

@mirijulip Sadly, everyone in Europe and Asia is dead now because their lack of mandatory 24' street widths meant fire trucks couldn't put out fires. This is why we should listen to firefighters when they say we can't have safe streets.

@peekabooveach @cadacuanto @daveloach2 It's the book cover from a book of maps of metro systems, so it's only cities that had rapid transit rail systems (or had them under construction) at the time of publication.

There is not a single good or useful reason to make buses "driverless". Not one. This is a total and complete waste of time and money.

@WilliamHazen7 Days like today show why we don’t rely on trains anymore. Nobody wants to stand on a frigid platform waiting for a train.

$130,000,000.00 to add a single second entrance to an existing Metro station... seems like a lot? (Entire LA Purple Line stations will cost about $120m each, and Paris Metro Line 1 extension stations cost about $110m each. Second Avenue Subway, on the other hand...)

Opened to a random page in the Trip Generation Manual R²=1.00 calculated on an n=4 with a 95% confidence interval that overlaps with zero. Never forget that this is the "science" that underlies most transportation planning decisions in North America.

@happyhuel1619 @mattyglesias 1. How does the frame make it harder to steal if it's attached with the same bolts holding the plate itself on? 2. Why would someone use a frame to prevent damage to the plate when the plate is someone else's property and not their own?

@zippkode Chicago is also a city where the mayor closed an airport in defiance of the FAA by sending public works to rip up the runway in the middle of the night.

Someone once asked me how to build a frequent bus network in a certain city I lived in, and I immediately blurted out "well, you'd start with burning all the buildings down".

I cannot stress enough how hard it is to build and operate transit that's useful when places look like this...
