“It’s just crazy how the world works.”
Justin Steele & Adbert Alzolay always seem to mention how good of friends they’ve become.

, on the development of 2 homegrown Cubs arms & the 9-year friendship they’ve built along the way:
Kyle Hendricks joined Fergie Jenkins, Rick Reuschel, Greg Maddux, Carlos Zambrano & Bill Hands as the 6th pitcher in the Expansion Era (since 1961) to throw at least 1500 innings with the Cubs.
Here are Hendricks’ thoughts on that ⬇️
Imanaga, via interpreter, on facing Suzuki: "We talked about it beforehand that we'll face [each other], and I told him I was gonna throw a fastball only. But once he gets out there, he looks bigger, and I don't wanna lose to him. So, I lied to him. I threw a breaking ball, too."
Cubs fans rose to their feet for Justin Steele when he was heading out for the top of the 9th.
Steele and Craig Counsell were happy to see the fans recognize the moment ⬇️
What was going through Shota Imanaga’s mind as he got the big K to end the bottom of the 7th?
Here’s his answer, plus a reaction from Cubs catcher Yan Gomes ⬇️
On May 28, after getting swept by the Reds at Wrigley Field, the Cubs had the worst record in the National League (22-30).
Now, 60 games later, the Cubs are 58-54 and are tied for the last NL Wild Card spot with those very same Reds.
This has been a wild season.
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer, asked about reports they are out of the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes: "I don’t know where that came from. There’s nothing to report whatsoever."
Said the Cubs have not been given a status update from the Ohtani camp.

Hayden Wesneski is the first pitcher since at least 1901 to make his MLB debut as a reliever and throw 5+ innings, allow 2 or fewer hits and strike out 8+ batters.
Nico Hoerner said Héctor Neris started a new tradition: Player & pitcher of the game get Cubs 'W' flags. Hoerner got one for his walk-off tonight.
"Neris has been an awesome clubhouse guy this year who's been part of a lot of great teams and brings a lot of infectious energy."
When the Cubs lost to the Cardinals at Wrigley Field on July 20, their playoff odds were down to 6.3% (FanGraphs).
This morning — 16 games later — the Cubs' playoff odds are up to 52.6%.
Cody Bellinger discusses the belief in the Cubs’ clubhouse that they can take advantage of the opportunity to stick together past the trade deadline ⬇️
Marcus Stroman enjoyed his 1st time pitching at Wrigley: “To have that behind you, that’s hard to put into words. Because that's not uniform around the league to have that home-field advantage from the crowd, to feel that energy each and every time. That's super rare in baseball”
If the Cubs keep this group together post-deadline, Cody Bellinger is confident that the can make a run.
"I've been confident in it. I see the talent. I've been around some good teams, been on some good teams, and we've got the right guys in this clubhouse. I believe it."
If Cody Bellinger returns to the Cubs, it could have an affect on Pete Crow-Armstrong's opportunities in 2024.
But PCA made it clear he wants Belli back on the Cubs.
"I'm here to win, and if Cody Bellinger is gonna do that and help us make that happen, then he should be here."
Willson Contreras on some teammates playing for the Cubs at Wrigley for the 1st time:
"Now, they must know that this place is special. It's been special to me from Day 1. I encourage them to enjoy it as much as they can, because time goes by and we don't know how fast it goes. "
Cubs 1st round pick Matt Shaw said he's taken "probably 99%" of his reps at 3rd base this offseason. Mentioned Nico Hoerner saying how valuable it is to be able to play any position.
"You never know where the oppotunities are gonna come. They could be anywhere."
Updates from Craig Counsell:
- Cody Bellinger has a chance to return before the end of the homestand
- Seiya Suzuki will go on a rehab assignment when he’s ready
- Ben Brown will be involved out the bullpen this series
Update from Swanson himself:
Said he just felt like his body was done after an exhausting day.
“Probably haven’t eaten or slept or drank enough water the last few days.”
Didn’t want to make a guess on if he’ll be in the lineup tomorrow, but said he’ll discuss with Ross
Cubs manager David Ross said Dansby Swanson was just feeling cramping after spending most of the day at the hospital while his wife, Mallory, underwent surgery.
Seems more of a precautionary removal from the game at this point.
Christopher Morel said he told Willson Contreras and Alfonso Rivas an inning before his first AB that he was going to hit a HR. Did he even know he was going in the next inning?
"Oh no... but I got to be ready."
Cubs first-round draft pick Matt Shaw is making his first trip to Wrigley Field today.
Here’s his thoughts on the idea of failing at the big league level:
The Cubs have some interesting prospects throughout the system, but at High-A South Bend alone will be LHP Jordan Wicks, OF Owen Caissie, LHP DJ Herz, RHP Kohl Franklin and SS Ed Howard, 5 of Chicago’s top 15 prospects. That’ll be a fun team
Ian Happ said former teammate Kyle Schwarber reached out about his new extension with the Cubs:
"Schwarb texted me and said, 'Congrats,' and I said, 'Thanks for setting the market.'"
Schwarber signed a 4-year, $79 million deal with the Phillies going into the 2022 season.
Expected positions for the Cubs’ first Cactus League game of the season:
C - Yan Gomes
1B - Eric Hosmer
2B - Nico Hoerner
SS - Dansby Swanson
3B - Patrick Wisdom
LF - Ian Happ
CF - Cody Bellinger
RF - Seiya Suzuki
DH - Trey Mancini
SP - Marcus Stroman
Cubs manager David Ross thinks Justin Steele is deserving of an All-Star nod.
“He’s a horse, man. I don’t know. Every time he takes the bump, he feels like a guy that it’s ‘win’ day.”
Cody Bellinger on trade deadline: "I definitely know what is possible. But I like being here, focusing on helping this team win while I am here. Hopefully, we can get on a little roll and stay together. We have a really good group here. I still have confidence in the whole group"
Cubs manager David Ross said Dansby Swanson was just feeling cramping after spending most of the day at the hospital while his wife, Mallory, underwent surgery.
Seems more of a precautionary removal from the game at this point.
Nick Madrigal didn’t get the opportunity to play in the Field of Dreams game last season due to injury/trade. So, he’s excited to get another chance only a year later with the Cubs.
Christopher Morel is only the 6th different Cubs batter with at least one span of 9 HRs in 12 games.
- Ernie Banks (3)
- Hack Wilson (3)
- Lee Walls (5)
- Aramis Ramírez (1)
- Sammy Sosa (36)
The Cubs' new "Core 4" of Happ, Swanson, Hoerner & Suzuki are signed through at least '26. But others who've been solid contributors may also factor in 3 years from now. A thread of names (per RosterResource):
- Jameson Taillon (last year of 4-year deal)
- Adbert Alzolay (Arb 3)
Cubs updates:
- Justin Steele, Kyle Hendricks back in Chicago, being reevaluated. Steele throwing bullpen on Saturday, will go from there
- Seiya Suzuki BP on field
- Jordan Wicks, Drew Smyly playing catch
- Cody Bellinger recovery day
Jameson Taillon's night: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Over his last six starts, he has a 2.17 ERA, a 1.018 WHIP and 3 K-per-BB. He's also 4-0 in that stretch and in line to improve to 5-0.
A very nice run of outings for Taillon when the Cubs have needed him to turn it around.
Cubs starters vs. White Sox:
1. Ian Happ, LF
2. Christopher Morel, 3B
3. Miguel Amaya, C
4. Matt Mervis, 1B
5. Alexander Canario, RF
6. Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
7. Luis Vazquez, SS
8. Joe Hudson, DH
9. Matt Shaw, 2B
Jordan Wicks, SP
Cubs catcher Willson Contreras has been named a starter for the National League in the 2022 All-Star Game.
It's Contreras' third career All-Star selection ('18 and '19)
Miles Mastrobuoni made a number of impressive defensive plays to help Justin Steele pitch his first complete game.
Steele: "If I had a player of the game, I'd give it to Mastro. He had some crazy plays today that definitely kept me in the ballgame, kept me going."
Ian Happ has been on a heater for a while now.
In his last 35 games coming into today, he had a 1.015 OPS and a 180 wRC+. He also had 36 RBIs, 2nd in MLB only behind Aaron Judge's 44.
Today, he's got a walk and 2 RBI-singles, the 2nd of which made just made this a 4-1 ballgame.
Marcus Stroman, since returning from the IL on July 9, 2022 (20 starts):
- 13 quality starts
- 2.18 ERA
- 1.07 WHIP
- 2.7 BB/9, 7.3% BB%
- 7.7 K/9, 21.3% K%

Christopher Morel had a 3-hit game on his 24th birthday today. Being interviewed on the Fox broadcast postgame, he said it was the best birthday he’s ever had in his life.
“In London, three hits, Cubs win… God is good.”
