Attention Utahns:
@sltrib
published a free guide of where you can go if abortions are further restricted in the Beehive State. It has:
-a map of the nearest cities/states to go
-an outline of laws in the states surrounding Utah
You can find it all here.
Hi
@danmccay
, I've been trying to get in touch with you for over a week now. I'd like to talk with you about your bill, "Proposal to Amend Utah Constitution -- Rights Relating to Abortion." Looking forward to hearing from you about this important topic.
Some personal news 📰 Monday is my last day reporting on women's issues for
@sltrib
. I'm so proud of the work I've done, and I'm grateful to
@sltrib
and
@Report4America
for giving me this opportunity. I'm very lucky to have worked with such a talented team of journalists.
As we wait for the Supreme Court's official ruling on Roe v. Wade, I'm starting a thread of
@sltrib
's abortion coverage from the last few weeks to make it easy for readers to find our reporting. 🧵👇
Courtney could've easily written a simple story about the bill signing. Instead, she wrote a powerful accountability article.
Yet another example of why she's such a talented journalist. Utahns are lucky to have her reporting for them.
Gov. Spencer Cox signed Utah's anti-DEI bill.
Many of the prohibitions in it are things the governor has previously heralded while in office ...
-diversity trainings for staff
-signing statements on inclusion
-scholarships for students of color
“I need people to know that it’s people like me. I’m your next-door neighbor. I’m your friend. I’m the mom at pick-up.”
4 Utah women share their abortion stories as Roe v. Wade hangs in the balance.

They're starting with a dance in honor of MMIWG day
Today, is my 3 year anniversary with
@sltrib
, and I'm grateful to
@Report4America
for bringing me here to report on women's issues & the status of women in Utah. 🧵👇
.
@CourtneyLTanner
and I unlocked a new level of our friendship as a journalism duo this weekend by sharing the Sunday cover of
@sltrib
. And we are pretty excited about it.
Since I started at
@sltrib
via
@Report4America
last year, I've kept a spreadsheet of each person I've talked with/included in a story, his/her gender, and whether this person had been in the paper before.
Coming up on my one year anniversary, I crunched some numbers this morning.
24 hours after the protest started, the tents are still up at UW-Madison. It's a peaceful, quiet morning. I'm back out here reporting for
@CapTimes
.
I'm counting at least 26 tents on Library Mall.
I'll be honest: I'm tired. I did a lot of reporting to prepare for this moment, but it's still been exhausting to keep up with all that's happened this week.
But there's more work to do, and I'll keep doing the journalism that
@sltrib
readers and Utahns expect and deserve.
BREAKING: Judge grants a request to block Utah's abortion trigger law from being enforced. The temporary restraining order will be in place for 14 days.
Here it is! 🥳🥁📢 The kickoff to our series digging into Utah's reputation as the worst state for women's equality.
This editorial explains why we did this deep dive. Watch
@sltrib

@Report4America
Time for a cute story:
My mom prints out my
@sltrib

@report4america
articles for my 93-year-old grandma (who I call Amah) to read.
Amah apparently shares these with her friends, and one of them gave her a $20 bill to donate to support the work RFA/The Tribune does.
Some personal news, as they say 💁♀️📰
I'm starting a new job reporting on higher education
@CapTimes
April 1. (No, that's not an April Fools' Day joke.)
My last day
@PostCrescent
is March 27.
I've told a bunch of people already, but it's worth tweeting. I'm staying at
@sltrib
through
@report4america
for a second year to keep reporting on women's issues and the status of women in Utah. I'm so proud of the first year of stories we've done, and I'm excited for more. 🗞️

A group is asking the Utah Legislature to provide free menstrual products in all public K-12 and charter schools in the state.
“Access to period products is as necessary as toilet paper."
Story from
@CourtneyLTanner
and me.
First, what happens now?
Well, Utah's trigger law - banning abortions in the state except for a few, limited circumstances - is set to go into effect. But it's not in place YET.
More on that in this developing story today.
Journalism tip: When you're on the road, file your story from a Culver's. An employee may come up to you, say they made extra of the flavor of the day and give you a scoop of frozen custard.
True story.
Today is my first day
@CapTimes
! I'm excited to get started covering higher education. Reach out with story ideas or to chat here or at bjacobs(at)captimes(dot)com☕️📰
There's way to prevent more children from getting sick with COVID-19, according to Utah health care providers: Adults need to get vaccinated, and people need to wear masks.

On Sunday,
@sltrib
launched my editorial about why we are taking a deep dive on Utah's reputation as the worst state for women's equality.
We included a survey, asking readers what they would like to see change about the lives of women in UT & how UT can improve its reputation
I'm so excited to join the Salt Lake Tribune and Report for America covering women's issues. It's a great opportunity, and I'm ready to get started. But until then, there are some more crime stories to write for the Post-Tribune.
We’re thrilled to announce our 2019 Report for America corps members, a group of 61 journalists who will bring top-notch reporting to 50 newsrooms across America! Here’s the full list of corps members and where they’re heading:

We've had so many cool suffrage stories in
@sltrib
since I started last year through
@Report4America
. Here's a thread of them all to help you celebrate the suffrage anniversaries this year. 🎉🗳️
Journalists, do you also map out stories and write ledes in your mind as you fall asleep, hoping you remember those revisions in the morning?

As Election Day approaches, let's take at women's voter participation in Utah. 🗳️
Utah plunged from having the highest turnout of female voters in the country in 1992 — known nationally as the Year of the Woman — to the nation’s lowest 14 years later.
1/ As Women’s History Month comes to an end, let’s revisit some moments from the Utah Legislature this year that capture issues that women in the Beehive State face today. 🙋♀️
Eli used to come home crying from elementary school after being bullied. His mom said there was no other option: They needed to leave Utah and move somewhere more supportive of transgender children.

Yesterday,
@sltrib
published a story about Eastern Utah Teen Council -- a group of teens in Price who are filling in the "gaps" in Utah by teaching "real sex ed" to other teens.
Here's how that story came together. 👇🧵
I've loved covering women's issues in Utah, and I'm thankful for every source who helped me tell these important stories.
But it's time to move back to the Midwest and live closer to family. ❤
FYI: We made a portion of my larger story free to readers, outlining abortion laws in the states surrounding Utah, and showing where Utahns can go if abortions are further restricted in the Beehive State.
That information is available here.
Today, on International Women's Day, I thought I'd share some stories I've written on the women's issues beat for
@sltrib
&
@Report4America
over the last year. 🧵👇

@sltrib
's weekly paper on Sunday. 📰
There's ALWAYS good journalism in there. But I'm extra excited for this edition because we're kicking off a project digging into Utah's reputation as the worst state for women's equality.
What's next? I'll be working at
@PostCrescent
, creating a new beat (again) and reporting on the paper industry for Gannett's Wisconsin newspaper network. 🗞️🌲
One woman says she felt like "a piece of meat on the exam table." Another says he "treated her body like some sort of play thing."
Now, 50 women are suing a Provo OB-GYN, saying he sexually assaulted him while he was their doctor.
New story from me.
Excited to have a 3rd
@Report4America
journalist join our team! 🥳
This is also a good time to share that I'm staying on for a 3rd year at
@sltrib
and will continue covering women's issues.
I love this beat, and I feel incredibly lucky to work in such a talented newsroom.
The
@sltrib
's newest
@Report4America
reporter
@AlixelCabrera
will focus on 10 communities on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley. She’ll be covering not just the city governments, but the people who live in those communities.
I've been keeping a spreadsheet of the people I've interviewed for my stories since I started at The Salt Lake Tribune a little over four months ago.
So far, 66 of 80 of the sources have been female. And we've included 42 new voices who haven't been quoted in the paper before.
Hey guys, I have something cool to share 😃:
This morning,
@sltrib
sent a survey to each of Utah’s 104 state lawmakers, asking what they are doing to help women as the Beehive State looks to successfully emerge from the coronavirus pandemic.
If you're in Utah, there's a good chance that you're going to see/hear/read the name Seraph Young today.
On my way to work this morning, I was behind a car with her name on the license plate. No joke.
So who is she?
This weekend, I won a first place award for business coverage. Thanks
@WNA_news
for recognizing my reporting on loggers and Wisconsin's paper industry!
Today was another busy reporting day. But it was also my first cover story for
@CapTimes
! Teamed up with
@elmcgroarty
to write about history unfolding in the present.
Female inmates at Utah State Prison don’t have access to as many vocational trainings as men do. Some worry that plays into gender stereotypes and may funnel them into lower-paying jobs when they are released.

Today is my one year anniversary working for
@PostCrescent
/ USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin.
I'll admit, I was a little unsure when I started on the paper industry beat. But now I can confidently say it's been a lot of fun, and I'm glad I took this leap. 📰🧻
Help us out.
This morning,
@mskellycannon
asked me if it was raining in SLC. I told her it was "spitting a bit." She said she'd never heard "spitting" used to describe rain.
Is that a Midwest term?
Seraph Young was the first woman — not just in Utah, but in the country — to vote under an equal suffrage law.

ICYMI: A Utah teacher said she was pushed out after reporting female students' concerns that a boy inappropriately touched them.
“Teachers should be able to report sexual harassment without worrying about retaliation," she says.
“I just feel so terrible when a victim comes & says, ‘Well, I applied for a protective order, but it was denied. So, I guess they didn’t think I was abused enough.’ I just cringe. It’s like, no, … that’s not it."

The Equal Rights Amendment is not just for women, but for everyone, no matter their gender, race or identity, said a speaker at a rally on

I've got to stop dreaming about journalism. It makes it very confusing to figure out who I've called and interviewed in real life or just in my sleep.

In Utah County, suspects who were people of color in are nearly 3 times more likely to be charged than white assailants in sexual assault cases.
That's one of the many findings from new research that I wrote about in this story.
