For my
@Essence
debut, I’m so excited to share the first installment of “OFF THE COURT: Style of the
#WNBA
,” a new series where I’ll be profiling the people who dress today’s top women athletes. First up:
@_ajawilson22
’s brilliant stylist
@madiitoosmooth
.
Meg: The world watched me hit rock bottom and I fell into a deep depression. The man who claimed to love me was actually an opp. But, I finally see, I’m killing myself over all of this when *y’all* would kill to be *me.*
Y’all: WE NEED TO GET BACK TO TWERKING! 😩
The way Meg cracked a little smile/withheld a giggle when she said, “Don’t read the big, bold letters! Don’t read them!”
We LOVE a media-literate health administration graduate over here. 😂😭
Had the honor of profiling
@keyon
, the voice behind some of the most viral content online, for
@HuffPost
’s Culture Shifters series! We talked about internet fame, growing up Black & queer in the South, and how it feels to be known by Adele.
Begging Mindy & Shonda Rhimes to stop inserting the “WOC fawning over/sought after by an average-looking white man” trope into their storylines. It’s lazy & annoying.
Whitney’s been through enough, and I will be flipping a table if this happens. I’m tired of seeing it.
#slocg
“He’s human sunshine.” “A modern-day Mr. Rogers meets Levar Burton.” “America’s favorite librarian.”
For
@HuffPost
, I spoke to
@mychal3ts
about his viral TikToks, the rise of book bans & attacks on third spaces, changing the face of librarianship & more:
T*yl*r Sw*ft feigned a Southern accent for years on her road to becoming a country starlet. She is literally from West Reading, PA, located 1 hour outside of Philly. But you’re criticizing a Black woman born & raised in Houston, TX over “cultural authenticity.”
Shut the hell up.
Meg isn’t interested in making TikTok music, bc she actually has talent. But presuming that an artist *must* create with the explicit, sole purpose of charting is dumb. It’s self-expression, it’s catharsis. She’s indie talent, and she’s earned the chance to do things her way.
Tired of constant cultural and intellectual theft, Black creators on TikTok have been on strike since Juneteenth, refraining from making a dance to
@theestallion
’s latest single, “Thot S—.”
My latest for
@latimesent
, featuring
@challxn
:
Ella Mai brought a girl and a guy to sing
#BoodUp
on stage and asked them each where they’re from and ole girl shouted, “THREE THREE SIIIIIIIIIIX.” North Carolinians are always so proud of their area codes, I’m weak. 😂💀
One of the worst things about the internet is seeing someone you know — and do not like because they were a microaggressive a**hole in undergrad — go viral.
Bringing this back for all the non-Black people who claim to be upset about the loss of Black lives but haven’t said shit today about Ahmaud Arbery. PULL UP.
“So when we’re marching and protesting and posting about the Michael Brown juniors and Atatiana Jeffersons of the World, tell your friends to pull up.”

For my 1st solo
@TeenVogue
byline, I wrote about the dangers of the adultification of Black girls, the “strong Black woman” trope, & how these things contributed to the neglect of
#ToyinSalau
,
#BreonnaTaylor
’s murder, & that of so many Black women & girls.
After 2 mos. of reporting, for
@HuffPost
, I wrote about the rise of the BBL & how butt augmentation has shifted thru pop culture. I spoke to patients, experts & influencers about the nuanced implications of the BBL, connecting race, body autonomy & more:
“Before there was sex, before there was the city, there was just me — Carrie.”
While everyone is focused on
#AndJustLikeThat
at the moment, I wrote about the underrated
#SATC
“reboot” that deserved more: The Carrie Diaries.
The girls that get it, get it.
For
@latimes
, I had the honor of speaking with
@nhannahjones
about seeing journalism as a form of activism, bringing visibility & opportunity to HBCU students, and her vision for training the next generation of Black reporters & storytellers:
May 23, 1999 marked the final episode of “Sister, Sister.” Ahead of its 24th anniversary, I talked to Ceci — the costume designer behind “Living Single,” “A Different World” and more — about her extensive career for
@HuffPost
’s “Who’s Behind the Clothes.”
Excited to announce that today is my first day as a full-time Culture Reporter at
@HuffPost
! So thrilled to have
@heyerinevans
’ guidance as editor and can’t wait to get to work covering all things pop culture, entertainment & identity.
Ahead of
#NYFW
, I spoke to Black fashion writers, historians, editors and more about what André Leon Talley’s legacy means to them. For so many of us, because of Talley, we can.
My latest for
@huffpost
:
Last thing; I love Whitney DOWN, but she just learned two essential lessons:
1) If that young man does not formally ask you to be his girl? You are single.
2) As a Black woman, do *not* take dating advice from white women.
#slocg
Like, I do not care what *their* type is IRL. WE. DO. NOT. CARE. Television does not need 10,000 more mediocre white love interests. Whitney better not end up with that lil’ boy from biochem. End of discussion!
#slocg
“What happens when a magical spell transforms a high-fashion doll into a full-blown problem?"
For
@HuffPost
, I wrote about the 2000s movie that walked so that Greta Gerwig’s
#Barbie
could run: Disney’s “Life-Size,” starring Tyra Banks & Lindsay Lohan.
It’s so...interesting watching everyone have this ~epiphany~ that UNC doesn’t give a sh!t about its student body when Black students have consistently been put in harm’s way for the past several years. Really interesting watching innocence die because this isn’t novel to me.
Excited to announce that this spring, I’ll be working remotely as a
@TODAYshow
Digital editorial intern! Grateful for a new year with new opportunities, and thankful to all those who have supported me along the way.
#ReservationDogs
has been lauded for opening doors for Indigenous stories in Hollywood, but many Black Natives felt excluded from the series. This
#NativeAmericanHeritageMonth
, I spoke to Black Natives about it, anti-Blackness in Native communities & more:
Lumping Kaling & Rhimes together bc they’re both Dartmouth grads & WOC who do the same tired thing. Yeah, fine white men exist (e.g. Fitz), but enough. Rich stories can be told of relationships that don’t center whiteness. The critiques go in one ear, out the other, obvi.
#slocg
Now Whitney’s single and I smell an enemies to lovers trope with that yt boy in her bio chem class, love you down sister
@mindykaling
but we need to let the interracial relationships GO
For
@HuffPost
, I wrote about how the
@American_Girl
brand is back in the zeitgeist, thanks to the women behind meme pages like
@klitklittredge
&
@hellicity_m
. We dived into nostalgia, but also how the dolls have become a rallying cry for our generation:
The “Canceled at 17” piece actually made me physically angry. Framing assault, bullying, etc as a “mistake” and demanding that the abused be required to give their forgiveness — when the system has failed them & they had to take matters into their own hands — is absurd.
Said this before & I’ll say it again: I’m ~puzzled~ as to why white people are suddenly having this epiphany about racism in the US as if their Black peers, students, & friends haven’t been yelling about it for ages. Especially when they let instances like the ones below slide:
Five days before she became one of the youngest students to graduate from
@Harvard
, I spoke to Aoki Lee Simmons about life after undergrad, race & identity, walking in her mother’s footsteps and much more. My latest for

Officially a free agent, so
@TeenVogue
let me sound off. 🏀 I wrote about how misogynoir, respectability & desirability politics have coalesced as WBB continues its rise to prominence and sports media's obsession with exceptionalizing whiteness:
Excited & honored to finally announce that I’ll be joining the
@latimes
this summer as an Arts & Entertainment intern! Thank you to my professors, mentors & all those who have supported me along the way. Can’t wait to get to work with
@jreedwrites
!
Chatted with everyone’s favorite “white boy” who does the most on
#AbbottElementary
, the talented
@ChrisPerfetti
, about playing the well-intentioned, corny & lovable Jacob Hill and what we can expect from
@AbbottElemABC
Season 2, which premieres tonight:
Ahead of tonight’s
#AbbottElementary
episode, I talked to Black creatives on TikTok who’ve been leveraging their followings to “audition” for the series, giving us their best renditions of the newest additions to the Abbott faculty — and they’re hilarious:
In 10th grade, a bitter, racist classmate told me I’d never get into a single Ivy League after I got scammed out of the highest GPA award.
I got into 3 Ivies and earned a full ride to college, while he fumbled his trust fund AND got somebody pregnant. Life comes at you fast.
A university that terrorizes Black children for fun & gave $2.5 mill to confederates doesn’t want to give a Black woman, who published a Pulitzer Prize-winning work reframing American history, confronting slavery & centering the contributions of Black ppl, tenure. Soooo shocking.
At that Cabo dinner, Chelsea asked Jason a *very* crucial question that he should have answered (if Amanza didn’t rudely interject): “You want someone you’ve recently been in a relationship with to be friends with someone you are now in a relationship with. WHY?!”
#SellingSunset
Over the past month, I interviewed 7 Gen Z entertainment workers about how they’re surviving the Hollywood strikes. We discussed what the strike means for their craft, our futures & one’s ability to achieve the “American Dream.” My latest

After 2.5 yrs. at HuffPost, my last day will be April 5! So proud of what I’ve accomplished & forever grateful to have worked with an amazing culture team. Excited to take a breather before law school in Aug. (😅) but if you need a freelancer, hit my line:
Not a great day to be a Tar Heel or whatever the hell they teach us to say, but it’s an especially great day to be a Black woman journalist.
I feel very vindicated as an alumna, as a Black woman, as a journalist.
Shoutout to all of my professors who’ve made their classes remote! I would also appreciate it if you made your course asynchronous because...*whispers* attendance is a social construct :)
Now that this election cycle is over, I need y’all to go outside or crack a window, safely get some fresh air, and stop lusting over these news anchors. Please. 😭
I’m so excited to announce that I’m apart of
@TeenVogue
’s 2020 Youth Voter Committee! Out of over 350 applicants, I was selected to collaborate on this incredible project with one of my dream publications & I can’t wait to see where it goes.
#TeenVote2020
I need this Beyoncé country or Americana album to have a Pointer Sisters sample. A Charlie Pride sample. A Rhiannon Giddens feature. A Rissie Palmer feature. Hell, a feature from The Chicks & Chris Stapleton.
Baby, THIS IS MY ROMAN EMPIRE.
In my latest for
@HuffPost
, I talked to
@SusanMosesNYC
about styling Brandy on & off “Moesha” over the years, why curvy women like Queen Latifah & Jill Scott are her muses, and what she believes the future of body inclusivity in fashion holds. Get into it:
Honored to be inducted into the 2020 Argonaut class of the Order of the Golden Fleece, UNC’s oldest and highest honorary society. Thank you
@jeremiahorhodes
for writing my citation. 🥺❤️
“But my white sisters and brothers around me wanted forgiveness. Black forgiveness. I’m not giving it to them anymore...white churches are more concerned about the responses of black rage than they are about a system that justifies & rewards black death.”
For
@HuffPost
’s
#CultureShifters
series, I profiled
@DrewAfualo
. We talked about her journey from the NFL to TikTok, amplifying Samoan culture online & disrupting the notion that women of color *must* take the high road in the face of bigotry. (We don’t!)
“While some of us may have abandoned the creamy crack, these little girls will always stay with us.”
Wrote about the nostalgia — and hair envy — of our relaxer days taking over Twitter for

Glory to God for preserving me through some of the most trying years of my life at UNC. Would never do this shit again, under any circumstances. Happy last day of classes to me. Finally.
My best friend
@marcellitapa
just went on a date with a man who pulled out a literal UNO reverse card when the bill came. You lot have lost your damn minds.
