Very sad news that Jackie Mekler passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. Mekler was probably the greatest ultra runner of his era, winning Comrades 5 times & the Korkie 6 (the Two Oceans of its day). RIP Jackie, you led an inspiring life and left a legacy to be proud of.

There are many Bucket List marathons in South Africa🇿🇦 but

is only one I know where you can get a KFC Bucket Meal.
They only had healthy stuff like bananas, biscuits & jellybabies left by the time I arrived so I didn't overload my cholesterol & kick the bucket.

Thanks to Ann Ashworth and the Comrades Board for reconsidering and changing the final cutoff - it will be very interesting to run the stats after 9 June and see how many runners owe their 2024 medal to Comrades' willingness to listen and change.

Just 18 runners started inaugural
#GreatEastMarathon
(incl. some <2:20 marathoners).
I stopped to take a photo & was immediately in last place. Managed to steadily pick off runners along way to get Top 10 finish & maintain my status as a middle-of-the-pack runner.

Just like running Comrades, beer consumption during lockdown is all about pacing.
My aim at Comrades is to finish strong enough to enjoy a few beers.
Today I Bheki Cele'brated the end of hard lockdown with my last 3 beers & some shrimp on the barbie.

The Westville Illovo 15km was full of Christmas spirit (& spirits). I had an absolute blast. First official 15km I’ve run since 2011 and definitely the most fun December run I’ve ever done. More photos to follow during the week…
