Singapore and statist in the same sentence lol
Singapore spent the second half of the 20th century as a statist highly controlled city-state, one where local banks were largely kept on a tight rein, favorable housing policies for the locals were implemented, and Government linked corporations played an outsized role in the economy. Hong Kong meanwhile even to this day has out of control housing policies and lets mega landlords as well as banks dominate its society, largely operated the closest thing to a libertarian government for an advanced economy, and largely takes pride in its image as a tax haven. But yet none of it mattered, they ended the 20th century with nearly the same exact GDP per capita and nearly identical HDI. If a people are competent, it really doesn't matter what political system or even economic configuration they choose, so long as they allow a certain degree of economic freedom for the private sector and have state capacity.
