Feeling nostalgic today. I am retiring the @PerkinElmer PCR (Thermal Cycler) machine used to set up the lab 30 years ago @MDAndersonNews . It still works & never needed repair. I used it to identify my first knockout mouse ES cell clones.

Described to my grad students (both born after 1995) today how we used to do #plasmid 🧬preps using CsCl density gradients generated by ultracentrifugation 😲. I offered to show them how. They asked if we still had an ultracentrifuge.

I tip my hat to Ken-ichi Inoue doing this pronuclear microinjection into an opossum zygote. The shell & mucoid coat of #marsupial zygotes make injections very challenging. The injector makes it look so easy. Very elegant. @ISTT_TG

Here's summary of zygote sizes for invertebrates & vertebrates used in developmental biology research. I will be working with Xenopus tropicalis 🐸 zygotes soon @XenopusNXR @MBLScience . They are similar in diameter to zebrafish zygotes.

Genome edited opossums!!! Kiyonari & colleagues achieve a transformative step in mammalian genetics. So many technical hurdles were overcome in this tour de force study. Marsupials with both alleles mutated can be generated in one generation.

What?! The #Drosophila male genitalia rotates 360° clockwise 🤔 beginning ~24  hr after pupation & finishes ~12  hr later; resulting in spermiduct looping around hindgut. Complete rotation required for fertility.

During summer evenings (1911-1913), Ernest E. Just #blackscientist with lantern in hand would lie on a dock in Eel Pond, Woods Hole to collect polychaete worms for studies of fertilization. This continues each year in the @MBLScience Embryology course. @biyolokum @___SDB___

The tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) is a model kangaroo 🦘 for developmental and reproductive biology studies. Embryos in panels A-C are still free floating not implanted in the uterus. Much of development occurs after birth. @MarilynRenfree @___SDB___

I just completed ⁦⁦⁦ @racingtheplanet ⁩ Atacama Crossing in Chile 🇨🇱. A self supported multistage ultramarathon. 250 km over 6 Stages. We carry all our gear & food. Water, tents, & medical support provided. High altitude, hot desert, varied terrain. More than a race.

I finished a 250 km, self-supported, multistage ultramarathon in Namibia w/ @racingtheplanet . The race thru the desert was really tough because of heat 🥵(up to 54oC). The desert was beautiful & harsh. There were over 120 competitors from 46 countries.

This 8X finisher @ironman was humbled by @racingtheplanet Atacama Crossing multistage ultramarathon in Chile. I got thru Stage 1 but only 3/4 way for Stage 2. I underestimated many things but I learned a lot & got to meet so many wonderful people from around the world.

Bat 🦇 species have different #uterus morphologies. The bat we study, Carollia perspicillata, has a simplex uterus like human. They have a cycle of ~1 month, true #menstruation , & 1 baby after ~4 month gestation. 🤔 @SSRepro @___SDB___ @the_Node @SICB_

I'm headed to Chile 🇨🇱 today for a 7-day multistage ultramarathon with @racingtheplanet thru the Atacama Desert. I have never done an ultramarathon! Race starts Sunday. We carry all our equipment & food from camp to camp. An adventure.
