Not long ago, I wasn’t sure I could save a child with a large brain tumor. Operated on him 3x, and it was months before he went home, in time for Xmas. Today, he told his mother to look for me on Facebook, just so she could send me a video of him, standing up for the first time.

I’m a neurosurgeon, so prior to Omicron in PH, I only had to care for COVID+ patients infrequently. But now, its EVERYTHING + COVID: Brain tumor? Add COVID. Brain abscess? COVID, too! Stroke? Prob from COVID! Congenital malformation? Delivered by COVID mother! THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Can we STOP the war metaphors? They should've never been used in this health crisis. At the end of a war, nobody really wins. To see this pandemic from a military viewpoint is to accept that lives will be lost, that people are enemies of each other. That's not how we do medicine.

The headline needs fixing, @gmanetwork . Dr. Ging Zamora is nothing short of phenomenal: class valedictorian, patient advocate, loving single mother. It’s an insult to use a man’s name to introduce her, just for you to earn clicks.

Recently, in OR, the anesth I work with (friend since INTARMED LU1!) had thought of asking the intern to insert 2nd IV access, foley on our patient. All the MDs in the room were rooting for the student! I realized: we need to ACTIVELY give them opportunities to learn like this.

We are not “critical”? You do know that if you get a heart attack or stroke or even just severe asthma attack right now, it will be extremely challenging to find a hospital that will admit you readily, moreso a vacant ICU bed? Unless of course you’re rich and privileged.

Probably (almost) every neurosurgeon’s nightmare. We mentally prepare for this, though. As you scrub, as you clip the patient’s hair, as you lay down the drapes, you imagine the worst possible scenario in your mind and the steps you need to undertake in case it does happen.

Enhancement of risk, rather than reduction of risk, with plexiglass desk shields suggests (a) large droplets aren’t important as a mode of spread, as plexiglass would catch splatter and (b) that plexiglass is actually making things worse.

@inquirerdotnet Here’s a better explanation: The Delta variant was already widespread long before DOH detected it, and even after seeing the numbers, DOH refused to acknowledge the inevitable surge and their failure to (Surprise! Surprise!) act early.

Sure, you can give yourself a pat on the back for avoiding politics & giving good care to the patient in front of you, but I hope we realize that there are many others who never even got to our clinics or hospital beds, because of a health system that is rigged against them.(1/2)

Philippine General Hospital, the national university hospital, will stop admitting non-COVID patients. Outpatient clinics and services will be closed. Elective surgeries will be reduced. We are reopening COVID wards, with more beds for kids. This did not need to happen. 😢

The best thing about Medicine is that it constantly teaches you that nobody’s life is more important than anybody else’s. Titles, degrees, income, religion, politics, gender, ethnicity—they all cease to matter when a life needs saving. As it should be for all service professions.

In 2013, they embezzled Php 10 billion of pork barrel. I was a trainee then, and I wrote about what that meant for our patients. Today, it’s Php 15 billion of PhilHealth funds, when Filipinos are dying to access health care. How can people be this evil?
